just on the argument about if gerrard plays we have to pick between alonso and masch, i think when all are available for selection that masch and alonso should play midfield with gerrard behind torres and keane on the bench, i personally think that's our best team,

No fecking way , already the top 5 defensive midfielders in the world , should not be looking to sell players of his calibre and god knows why he could not get a game at west ham , their lose our gain . Masch is 5 times the player barry will ever be and he's younger as well .

Erm.

The same logic that I applied in May to want Alonso here is applied to Mascherano. Holding midfielder. Argentine international. Different style and attributes compared to Alonso, but top class nonetheless.

If we want to compete in all competitions we need that kind of quality. If we want to improve we must not sell the likes of Alonso and Mascherano, rather, buy in the positions that are not working, just like we did with Riera.

I don't think that move makes sense at all.

Agreed

selling a top player and replacing him with another top player isn't improving the squad. Improving the squad is by buying another top player.

Selling a world class player and replacing him with a prem class player (who also only has about 3/4 good years left) is making the squad weaker.

I think Mascherano, in his role, is a world class player. However, as a footballer he isn't, he is a top player.

It's not something I would be in favour of, particularly as Barry is very similar to Alonso who is playing out of his skin this season. clearly it's not something many (any) of us would be happy with although Owzat has a point with the thread starter and I think that we don't really need Masch at home against the likes of Fulham. His greatest attributes are his tenacity, his tackling ability, his incredible workrate and his all around tidy play. When we are playing at home, have plenty of possession and don't really need (or have the opportunity) to play our pressing game he becomes a bit of a passenger. In his role for Argentina he is surrounded with attacking flair and this makes him necessary at all times. The situation is very different at LFC. Let me make it clear i'm not for one minute suggesting we sell him. We need our little rottweiller for a lot of big games coming our way.

Mascherano is a great player but we really need players that can contribute something going forward too.

Im sory but you dont get rid of a holding player and buy an attacking player.....its the attacking players we need to replace. Mascherano is a key player in midfield, he works hard for the team and breaks down other teams play. Surley we need to appreciate what he does for the team

Maybe the move that was heavily covered in the summer would be blocked again, but in theory would people on here be open to this as an idea? I'm sure most would love to hang onto Mascherano and find the money some other way, but is he really needed in a lot of games - such as Fulham at home? We might even negotiate any bid up a bit, make a tidy profit.

Without Mascherano : P11 W8 D2 L1 (Won 72.73%)

Maybe the above stats aren't conclusive proof we don't need him, but if we can win nearly 73% of the games he doesn't play then is he that crucial? The only defeat in his absence was our reserves losing in the Carling Cup at WHL, the draws the home game against Stoke and away at Standard Liege.

Thats an interesting stat that,
He definitely needs to start bossing things a bit more, he is the Argie captain after all.I noticed a few good passes from him on the weekend, we need to see alot more of that.

Stats are a worthy math tool when the sample you work with is huge enough to jump to conclussions. Certainly the games so far this season are not that huge sample, so in this case the stats are an anecdote.

It would be harsh to ask Mascherano more when he has sacrificed for the team. Many posters bang on Alonso, but Alonso when played alongside Mascherano and behind Gerrard is that "different" and "much better" and "don't sell him!!" player precisely thanks to the work of Mascherano and the contribution of players like Riera.

Mascherano has done his work with discipline, and I can only say admiration words about him. I can't ask him "assists" when he's doing all the covers, when he gives oxygen to Alonso with one of his runs with the ball (something Alonso is not that comfortable with).

Mascherano is a hell of a player. Last season, and in this season who's doing a more sacrificed work aswell. The great Alonso wouldn't be that great without men like Mascherano surrounding him.

I hope Mascherano doesn't become another case of the "new shoes" syndrome. That syndrome that consists on saying all kind of praises about a new player, then getting used to his quality, and then, starts criticising his game.

All "the stat" states is that Masch played..absolutely NOTHING else!
What are we to draw from this?What is the point of posting the stat?What does it mean?Are we better without him?
Is that what the poster is trying to say?
Does it say who played with him?If we were home or away?Was he started,subbed on subbed off?What formation we played?What team we played?...Not that any of that would alter the fact he is a great player that we are lucky to have!

Its just total unneccesary shi'te...Owzat I can no longer read one of your stat posts without thinking of Carol Vorderman playing wit an Abacus!
I used to think she was hot for an auld doll too and often visited her in at w@nkland,youhave ruined that with your stat and number obsession!

Oh and by the way all this he is argie captain after all balls,ffs wise up.He has been for all of two weeks,had it been 2 years it still would'nt make any difference though...he's still the same player!You dont get better cause you captain your country,its real football,not a computer game!
