Turn off t'internet

Another daft-ish computer question....for the completely clueless (like me)!

Aside from physically removing the Ethernet cable/disconnecting routers and what have you from the incoming Broadband feed.

Is there not a way to disable the Internet from WITHIN the PC itself, so as to ensure a safe working environment whilst twiddling about with me D.A.W?

Might be obvious..for all i know it may be a fallacy. Other than actually pulling out the bloody plug - can one of you fine fellows point me in the right direction. Ta!

You can disable it by clicking on your Start menu then Control Panel. From there go to Network Connections and you should see your connection there. Right click on it then click Disable.

Hope this helps.

A bigger question is can the internet be switched off altogether, like worldwide.

Is this possible?

Well, it is very complex to do that, but there are certain BIG SERVERS which are called backbones, which are crucial so that the internet is the internet we know.

For instance, if I send to Joe Terp an e-mail, it won't go from Spain to USA directly, it will go through the backbone that is in Holland -- unless it has changed in the last two years

Taking down the backbones would make the whole thing a lot of unconnected pieces, so you could say you can turn off the internet. Not completely, but yes quite effectively.

I wonder if for the powers that be internet is not more a problem than a bless.

WE must thank the internet to the U.S. Defence department, and I'm sure they didn't intend to build the massive network of information, pórn and security breaches that the internet provide.

In fact, some voices have talked about internet 2, with more secure protocols -- ie, you're more controlled. But I think that internet's popularity would make that unviable.
