Mascherano and gerrard - Can someone please explain this?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Fo Dne » Thu Oct 02, 2008 6:12 pm

I really need to see what I'm missing here with these two playing together. Everyones banging on about it but I fail to see where the balance comes from.

I fail to see how this would help us be a more creative and attacking side. I fail to see where the creativety, passing ability and intelligence comes from.

Nearly everytime they've played together we've lacked ideas, tacitcal knowledge and brains from the centre, the ability to get the team to press higher up the pitch and someone who can play the right pass with vision and a cool head.

Please someone explain to me what I'm missing?

How can having two ball winners in central midfield and no play makers benefit a team? ???

Very good player he is mate, but so overated by our own its unreal. The balance with him and Gerrard is none existant, flat and brainless. I just don't see it at all. Far to defensive with nowhere near the required level of vision or technical ability or even intelligence and correct ball use.

Out of him and Gerrard, there would only ever be one winner as Gerrard's better at just about everything (apart from concentration in pressing the ball for the full ninety).

I'm curious as to why everyone wants to see this pairing again and has forgot how bad it was last season.

I think more people have been calling for Gerrard on the right, or at least I am, or at least that is how I would get Mascherano in the side.    Yea you take away from Gerrard's game on the right, but Mascherano is just that much a better footballer than Kuyt that the TEAM is better off with all three of masch, Alonso, and Gerrard somewhere on the pitch

I agree to an extent. I just think Gerrard was that good against Everton and the team is gathering momentum that now you can't really drop the main reasons for the performances, of which Gerrard is one of them.

same here mate, i like mascherano, but his partnership with Gerrard is pretty average and ive never been a fan of the pair playing together, but that is very much a minority view amongst Liverpool fans it seems.

Last season all our worst performances were when they played together yet when talk of Gerrard moving back to his prefered position everyone seems to think that Alonso should make way for him, which is a bad move IMO. They could all play together in if Gerrad moved to the right, but if Gerrard stays in the centre then it must be with Alonso, as he is the only one who can play make/dicatate tempo. Gerrards an all or nothing player and Mascherano is extremely limited as a creative force.

I think the answer to all of your questions, Stu, is that the vast majority of us are largely satisfied with the personnel, tactics etc. when we win matches.  As it so happens, Gerrard and Masch have been the central midfield partnership a fair few times when we've chalked up a win and that's good enough for most.  You, on the other hand, clearly have sights set on a loftier ambition: building (even if hypothetically) the perfect 11 who individually and collectively possess all of the attributes in all of the appropriate and completely complementary proportions that would permit us to walk the league.  It's not that many of us can't see the shortcomings of particular players, it's just that when the dust settles and we're three more points to the good we prefer to break out the pineapple rather than obsess about how much more stylishly we could have achieved the exact same result. :;):

I'd like to see a team with balance, purpose, quality and intent.

With Keane, Torres, Riera, Alonso and Gerrard we have that, all it needs is a good right sided player, a right back and a centre half then we have a very nicely balanced and top quality side with options to change. I guess I'm just silly because I want our best 11 to be good enough and have the right balance and quality to win the league.

I want balance and depth too, Stu.  The difference is that I am completely comfortable that Masch can slot into the team without disrupting our momentum.  I also think that our current crop of CBs are up to the job.  Where I think we're weak is at fullback (although I still hold out hope for Aurelio) and at RM.  No doubt you'll come back and argue that a Masch-Gerrard pairing weakens us in the middle and that a Carra-Agger/Skrtel pairing weakens us at the back but, honestly, I don't think either inhibits our ability to challenge.  Maybe I'll feel differently come May but based on what I've seen of the team since at least mid-February last year, CM and CB are not areas of significant concern for me.

Yeah but that might be seen as a good thing in a goalkeeper, maybe not such a good thing for a player supposedly chock full of creativety, passing ability and intelligence, with  ideas, tactical knowledge and brains  :p
