Important record coming up - Liverpool goal machine

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Owzat » Sun Sep 28, 2008 10:33 am

I believe our next goal in the Premiership will be our 1,000th in the Premiership. Would it be fitting for it to be Gerrard's 100th for Liverpool?

I also calculate that we've not lost our 19th or 26th games in 16 Premiership seasons, both have records by my reckoning of P16 W8 D8 L0

And IF we win our next four games then we would have made our best start ever in the Premiership, eclipsing the curent best of 24 points from our first 10 games set in 2002/3

Best starts (after 10 games)

02/03 24 points
96/97 23 points
01/02 22 points
94/95 20 points
95/96 20 points
07/08 20 points

Shd have done a poll to see who will score the 1000th goal...

I got a feeling that it might be Kuyt ......  :D who will proceed to put himself into LFC record book.

Surprising that the 2005/6 season doesn't feature there, seeing
as that has been our best total points tally since the new Premeir League.

We just have to take it 1 game at a time and hope we can keep stringing together results. We have 2 big games coming up in PSV and Man City.

4 yellows for City against Wigan.  Game is becoming a scrap.

Thanks. I use various sources to get the raw data - results lists, Premiership tables etc. They may be quoted elsewhere, but I don't pinch these from other people or sites. All my stats are secondary sourced I believe the term is, where I use someone else's data to create stats.

I just wish I had sources for more stats, the goalscoring one was hard work and had I had the source then that I have now I'd not have been mislead into thinking Fowler didn't score on debut.

http://www.lfchistory.net/stats_goalindebut.asp

And this is pinched, happy to admit when I cite someone else :

How many games until debut goal

  Player Minutes Games Debut goal
1 Peter Crouch 1.228 18 03.12.2005
2 Arthur Rowley 1.019 11 no goal!
3 Ian Rush 813 10 30.09.1981
4 Michael Robinson 784 10 28.09.1983
5 Jack Balmer 531 6 07.12.1935
6 Kevin Baron 527 6 08.11.1947
7 Phil Boersma 480 7 04.11.1970
8 Emile Heskey 436 5 01.04.2000
9 Les Shannon 382 5 30.08.1948
10 Alf Arrowsmith 361 5 16.09.1963
11 Karl-Heinz Riedle 342 4 26.08.1997
12 Alan Waddle 337 4 08.12.1973
13 Dean Saunders 332 4 27.08.1991
14 Fernando Morientes 316 4 01.02.2005
15 Ian St John 309 4 30.08.1961
16 Sammy Smyth   292 4 07.02.1953
17 Eric Anderson  261 3 06.02.1954
18 David Johnson  255 3 28.08.1976
19 Neil Mellor   254 4 08.01.2003
20 Bobby Murdoch  252 3 08.02.1958
21 David Hodgson   242 4 04.09.1982
22 Nicolas Anelka  218 4 05.01.2002
23 Jack Whitham  190 3 12.12.1970
24 Tony Hateley 188 3 26.08.1967
25 El Hadji Diouf 183 3 24.08.2002

*Strikers not included who played less than 10 games for the club.
*We decided to only include strikers since the 1945-46 season as we do not always have scoring minutes from way back in time so it's difficult to compare

I'm a little surprised Fowler's second stint isn't in there, it was his second debut. I knew about the site, hadn't really visited it much.

I saw Jack Whitham score a hatrick for us against Derby but I don't think it was his debut , where as Stjohn scored a hatrick on his debut but it was in the Liverpool senior cup (and way before my time!)

Surprising that the 2005/6 season doesn't feature there, seeing as that has been our best total points tally since the new Premeir League.

2005/6

Games 1-10 : P10 W4 D4 L2 PTS 16
Games 11-19 : P9 W8 D1 L0 PTS 25
Games 20-28 : P9 W4 D2 L3 PTS 14
Games 29-38 : P10 W 9 D0 L1 PTS 27

Half our points were picked up in the first half of the season, half in the second half. Had we started better, or had a better run in the third quarter, then we'd probably have won the title. We won 10 in a row between 29/10/05 and 31/12/05, then hit our worst spell

West Ham (h) 29/10/05 W2-0
Aston Villa (a) 05/11/05 W3-0
Portsmouth (h) 19/11/05 W3-0
Man City (a) 26/11/05 W1-0
Sunderland (a) 30/11/05 W2-0
Wigan Athletic (h) 03/12/05 W3-0
Middlesborough (h) 10/12/05 W2-0
Newcastle Utd (h) 26/12/05 W2-0
Everton (a) 28/12/05 W3-1
West Brom (h) 31/12/05 W1-0

21 goals for, only one conceded.

Bolton (a) 02/01/06 D2-2
Tottenham (h) 14/01/06 W1-0
Man Utd (a) 22/01/06 L0-1
Birmingham (h) 01/02/06 D1-1
Chelsea (a) 05/02/06 L0-2
Charlton (a) 08/02/06 L0-2

One win in six, the two toughest away days in there didn't help. After 18 games, the end of the 10 consecutive wins, we were on 40 points and well placed. Six games later we'd crawled to 45 points from 24 games and our late run of nine consecutive wins to the end of the season listed us

After 29 games : P29 W16 D7 L6 PTS 55

We scored 23 goals in the last nine games, won all nine. The four draws in the first five games and the run of one win in six mentioned cost us a title challenge. We're now getting the starts right, by my reckoning of 27 wins to be right in contention for the title, we need to win another 23 from the last 32 games and that's the trick - consistency. It's a comparitive marathon, we go well for 10-12 games and then go pear shaped.

2007/8

Games 1-14 : P14 W8 D6 L0 PTS 30
Games 15-25 : P11 W3 D5 L3 PTS 14
Games 26-38 : P13 W10 D2 L1 PTS 32

Easy to see where our title challenge fell apart last season, same pretty much as 2002/3 except last season involved too many drawn games - six at home, only in 2002/3 did we draw more games at home (eight)

2002/3

Games 1-12 : P12 W9 D3 L0 PTS 30
Games 13-23 : P11 W0 D5 L6 PTS 5
Games 24-38 : P15 W9 D2 L4 PTS 29

That 11 game run without a win was a shambles after the brilliant start. Defeats away to Boro, Fulham, Charlton, Sunderland and Newcastle, a draw away to Arsenal. Defeat at home to the mancs, draws at home to the bitters, Blackburn, Sunderland and villa.

Like I said, we go well for 10 or so games and then fall apart. We could well go that way unless we improve on scoring - seven goals from six games is pretty poor for 'title contenders'

Except Gerrard's 100 goals are in all competitions, the 1,000th goal is Premiership only.

So he's even more feckin' useless than you thought!
