Absolutely frustrating to watch today.  We put out near enough our strongest team, completely bossed the game and couldn't score for toffee (besides the perfectly good goal that got chalked off).  There's no way this was a team selection or tactics problem today...this was a finishing problem pure and simple.  Our best players all forgot their shooting boots today and we came away empted handed.  No doubt the usual whipping boys will get another flogging tonight but Dirk Kuyt was not the reason we lost today.  Nor Babel or Yossi (despite doing little of any note when they came on).  Dossena was poor and Arbeloa was merely decent, IMO, but it wasn't them either.  For me the difference was the fact that Torres is still very rusty (he had at least 3 chances he usually buries today and couldn't get it done), Keane is still overwhelmed (two golden chances spurned by him as well) and neither Gerrard nor Alonso really had their long-range shooting boots on, besides the two obvious good efforts.

It was bitterly disappointing to watch and we really could have used all 3 points in a weekend where one or even two of our main rivals will drop points but it wasn't to be.  I'm not yet prepared to write off our season nor to say we'll never solve this problem.  I'm hopeful that we can expect much more out of our top players and that they will deliver as the season goes on...because they sure didn't today.

Oh, earlier in the thread it was said that Torres game was learned and now he wont score 20 goals.  I think thats not quite why, I think he still has the potential but we switched formations, this one obviously not going his way for more goals but a win is a win.  Maybe once him and Keane gel he can break 20, but with Keane as his partner I think thats the reason why he wont break 20.

TBPH, I don't think it's a matter of Torres being sussed out by defenders nor a matter of him not quite excelling in the formation.  It wasn't the defenders nor the formation that led him to miss a free header or mishit with his left foot with the goal at his mercy or to have a few heavy touches when he's turned defenders in his last few games.  IMO, he's just a little rusty.  It's understandable: he's been injured and before that he's had a short pre-season and a long year of exceptional but demanding football.  He'll find his form in time and remind everyone exactly how hard it is to contain a lad of his quality, despite how much homework defenders do or what formation you stick him in. :nod

The reason why we can't break teams like Stoke down is simple....... we have no-one with game intelligence. Gerrard is probably one of the finest players to ever wear the red shirt, but the one thing he lacks is game intelligence, its also the reason I said Keane isn't a creative second striker. Alonso is one of the best passers of a ball in the world , but again he suffers from lack of that same vital ingredient. Its the reason the mancs paid £32million for Berbatov and will no doubt pay the same for Tevez.

They used to call them "canny players", players that can play the clever little balls THROUGH the defence, rather than taking the easy option of passing it out wide all the time.

Unfortunately, we have lots of very skillful players, others that "work hard" and some that are fast as lightening, but we have NO-ONE who has game intelligence. We still need a creative second striker, and unless we find one we will continue to struggle in games like this one. Most of the time the brilliance of players like Torres, Gerrard etc will carry the day, but sometimes you need that little bit extra......

Very very frustrating game to watch today, stoke played 10 men behind the ball and got lucky with the disallowed goal and we couldn't score after.

Well, first of all, our strike force showed clearly that they aren't in top form yet, when they do I don't think we will have a lot of problems scoring. Keane and Torres look off form, and we should stop playing kuyt on the right, play him as a striker if he is inform, he is a better player in his position, use his strength.

I don't think our defence was untroubled today at all! the back four was good, arbeloa had a fine game because stoke let him go forward. The midfield looked good, alonso delivering the balls and gerrard trying to unlock the defence (well he can't because he isn't as creative as some people think). Riera had a solid game, not spectacular, but he did show some good touch, passes and crosses. Dosenna was solid.

s@int, I do think, with time, Keane will settle down and gets his first goal, he will be the type of player who can unlock the defence, because he did show it numerous times at Spurs with Berbatov, always giving that pass that disect(i think thats the word) the opposition defenders to Berbatov.

I do think, really, that either Gerrard plays on the right, or we get another quality right midfielder. I'm sorry, but in numerous occassions today Kuyt just inturrupts our play by losing the ball on the right. He is a striker, a good one, a good backup striker not more.

The game, well frustrating, and well credit to stoke for defending well and ofcourse credit for the ref and the linesman to deny gerrard's legit goal (being sarcastic for the second part)
