But that only takes 4 years in to the barren spell.
Maybe it was arrogance from the owners that after Souness left that simply going back to the Liverpool way would bring the glory back.
Instead we should have been trying to find better ways to coach and train players rather than simply trying to win the title with Colllymore, Berger, James, Fowler etc.

You can also add kenny and evans to the list as well if you want - Souness was left with a very ageing squad that need replacing  . evans just went for all attacking football without even thinking about defence. if he had bought maybe one or two decent cbs then we would of won the title in the 90s.

It went pear shaped when kenny Dalglish left we never recovered from that.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Kenny Dalglish 1/2/2011

have you read the book? sorry i assumed you had read it, maybe i should have made it clearer. evans was refused money to buy a centre back at a specific time when one was needed which fowler reckons could have brought us the title

The team did need a change around though. Sir Bob inherited a good team but dismantled it and rebuilt a better team, so did Kenny to a point but that team was getting tired.

However, Souness wasn't and still isn't fit to lick Kenny's boots clean in my opinion, I just never really liked the man.

you could also argue the emergence of huge investment in other clubs Blackburn for example and the emergence of man ure. plus sky sudenly pumping milions in. its a combination of a lot of things bad luck bad managers and lack of vision and investment plus the prem aint easy to win.

I agree, Souness was the MAIN cause for our decline. Of cos, it didn't help that the period also coincided with the emergence of the talented Man Utd youth cohort, comprising of Giggs, Beckham, Scholes etc. But Souness MUST take the bulk of the blame for TOTALLY destroying a GREAT team and building a MEDIOCRE team. Yes, he brought in McManaman and Fowler but the damage that he inflicted was so great that it was irreversible even extending to the Evans, Houllier's and the current era.

Evans improved the team as a whole - he was almost there but too bad we had a dodgy defence and a crazy David James in goal. Houllier started well but the signings of Diouf, Diao, Cheyrou etc brought about his downfall and fortunately so as I can't stand his style of football.

Rafa faced an uphill task as he has gotto contend with the mights of Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelski when he took over. While I do not agree with some of his decisions sometime, I can see that he's slowly building up a good team and we have a strong youth spine waiting to make the step up in 1 or 2 seasons. One thing he should do is to stop complaining about the lack of transfer funds. In my opinion, he has spent a fair amount of $$$. For every 2 or 3 average signings e.g. Josemi, Gonzalez, Pennant etc, he can easily sign a world-class player. He must stop the habit of signing quantity iso quality. But we'll get there sooner or later as long as we do not destroy the current team setup.
