Hyypia's reaction to his omission from the CL-squad:

Sami Hyypia: I'll play my part for Liverpool despite Champions League disappointmentSep 8 2008

by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

SAMI HYYPIA today admitted his shock and dismay at being dropped from the Reds Champions League squad until the New Year at least - but hopes he still has a significant part to play in Liverpool's plans this season.

New UEFA regulations mean that eight players from every club’s 25-man Champions League squad must be home grown.

And Hyypia has been the man to make way. When the Reds travel to Marseille next Tuesday, he will be left at home. A new list is not submitted until the knockout stages are reached next year.

Currently on international duty, Hyypia said: “The manager’s decision to leave me out of the squad is a big disappointment for me.

“I understand it’s partly because of the UEFA regulations, but despite that, the news came as a surprise to me and a shock too.

“But the club had a ‘perfect’ timing for this: they didn’t want me to move elsewhere, so that’s why I was told the news of having been left out, just after the transfer window had closed.

“The club went public to say there had been offers for me, but turned them down. So perhaps that means I am still part of the plans for this season.

“I don’t know if I would have wanted to move on, had I heard news about the squad when the window was still open.”

Big Sami doesn't exactly sound too happy, which is of course perfectly understandable. I hope this doesn't come back to haunt us CL-wise, though we do have three other great options at cb I suppose.

Martin Kelly can also play centre back. He is kind of a RB/CB tweaner (just like Carra and Sergio Ramos :D   )

It's a key point, Joe.  No doubt Rafa has had a careful look at PSV, Marseilles and AM by now and has decided that Hyypia's aerial dominance isn't as big an asset against these particular clubs and that his lack of pace might count too heavily against him to be truly considered for these 6 matches.

Hit the nail on the head there.

yeah I just hope that 3 centre backs and Arbeloa will be enough defensive cover for 6 games, plus the full backs and the defensive midfielders and the forwards that have now become midfield players and the 3 keepers and the brick wall and the coaching from Pellegrino, will all contribute too a solid defence for the marathon 6 games..... :D

It's not ideal to go in with three experienced CBs when one missed all but a few games last season through injury. With this 8 homegrown player rule there had to be some sacrifices, you'd think maybe selling Finnan and Crouch wasn't done with that in mind. I was a bit surprised El Zhar wasn't included.

Hyypia has filled in at worst adequately when needed, we'd just better hope that injuries don't hit us in that department. I certainly wouldn't fancy Kelly at CB, be it Ned Kelly, Kelly Brook, Kelly Le Brock or Martin Kelly.

What does make me laugh is the panic about the group we drew, a lot of people saying it was a tough draw, and now we're talking about Arbeloa and Kelly as cover CBs as if the group is easy!

this is the reason why I think that these rules should not have (much of) an effect on our transfer policy.  Anyone left off of the CL squad is just going to be that much fresher for the premier league, which is the priority anyway.  I also don't think it makes sense to go out and by a bunch of English players just to fill the ranks. Unless these English players are going to be better CL footballers than our current crop of mostly internationals, then we would be paying over the odds for a player that probably wont make the bench for most CL matches.

It was a mild surprise to me that El Zhar was not included because he had featured in our first 4 matches.  But who knows what the extent of Torres' injury will be (hopefully not a long term reoccuring thing) and with no more Voro, Kuyt being incapable of causing damage from upfront, and Babel almost never playing up top, N'Gog had to be in the list.  The other player to sacrifice I think would be Degen since we can play Carra and Arbeloa there (and Darby, Kelly, sort of Irwin, and hell, we could even get away with Kuyt or Gerrard in a real pinch).  Not sure what Rafa was thinking, but if he only kept on 3 centre halfs, I can't see Jamie getting too much RB action, and Arbeloa hasn't looked full of confidence so far this campaign.

still cant understand why we cant fit everyone in that 25 man squad..

GK

Reina
Cava

DEFENDERS

Dossena
Aurelio
Arbeloa
Darby*
Hyypia
Agger
Skrtel
Carra*

MIDFIELDERS

ElZhar
Pennant*
Babel
Riera
Benayoun
Alonso
Gerrard*
Mascherano
Lucas

Forwards

Torres
Keane*
Kuyt

thats 22 players with 5 trained in England (3 in liverpool) .. that squad has everyone in it including ElZhar and Hyypia and the only player i think i left out was Degen but who gives a flying fck whether hes there or not anyways !
anyways 3 spots left we could have had a backup goalie and maybe a backup forward and spearing.... better than leaving Hyypia and Elzhar out ?!

Ace you also left out N'Gog, and with Kuyt not really being a forward anymore and the posisble niggling injury threat to Torres, that leaves us very thin at forward. Nathan Eccleston is the only B list player available in this position, and he only sparingly plays for the ressies.

yes... which makes ace's point, all though well thought out, totally pointless

IF you want a full 25 man squad, then yes you would need at least 8 players trained in England, but Ace said he only had a squad of 22, with 5 English.

There is no rule stating that you have to fill your squad of the maximum 25 allowed players, and hence no rule to keep at least 8 English players on the books. The rule should be viewed as you have to reserve at least 8 spots out of 25 for English players, AND of that 8, AT LEAST 4 spots have to be reserved for LFC trained players.  You are allowed to have all 8 spots be taken up by LFC trained players, and you are allowed to have more than 4 trained in England players. However, if you have 5 English players, that means that at most you could have 16 internationally trained players.

Also there is a B list squad where you can put down and unlimited number of U21 players at the club that have been at LFC for at least 2 years. There are no restrictions on how often or how many of these B list players are allowed to play in CL matches.  If somehow we found ourselves with an overload of international, English, and Liverpool trained players, it would make sense to put as many people that were elligible for the B list on the B list because B list players do not take away spots from anybody else.  In this thinking, our B list for this year should include Darby, Spearing, Kelly, Hansen, Eccleston, Flynn and Irwin. This means we are really only "using" the English spots on Keane, Pennant, Gerrard, and Carra.  Rafa only registered Darby, Spearing, and kelly because I guess it looks better to register a full squad, but he could have just as easily put all of them on the B list and they would have been just as elligible for the CL.

Of note: San Jose, Insua, and Hammill (returning from loan in January) will all be eligible to be put on the B list for the knockout stages.
