It isn't going to get any easier neither.

Benitez expresses fears about the new City

Rafael Benitez has admitted that Manchester City are a threat to the status quo of the Premier League's big four and could cause high inflation in the transfer market.

For Benitez, the stunning capture of Robinho for a British record transfer fee could have set in motion a chain of events that will blow the accepted 'big four' wide open.

'You cannot just win the title by spending money but Chelsea won for two years spending big, big money. Afterwards Manchester United won spending lots of money too,' he said.

'If we are talking about spending money then maybe Manchester City will win the title this year.

'It is not just a question of money but if you have more money it is easier. If you don't have too much money, you must do the job as best you can.

'If we are talking now, maybe they (City) need time but if we talk in January maybe they will buy five players...then you never know.

'But it is not just a question of 'I will invest more and I will win'. You cannot guarantee anything.'

Benitez fears a hike in transfer fees involving English clubs as a result of City's cash bonanza as happened when Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea in 2003.

'Prices could rise,' said Benitez as he unveiled £8million signing Albert Riera, himself a former City player.

'That could be a problem. You cannot change these things but you try and get the players you want as cheap as possible, even when prices go higher.'

Excuses for what? There's nothing but truth in what he's saying. Some people will use anything to get a sly dig in. I've had to bite my tongue typing this post and be as pleasant as possible. Really starting to get on my nerves now, every f*cking thread you go into, it's the same bollox.

Well......if u don't like it....just don't read it......

Rafa Benitez issues Liverpool FC warning.

Sep 6 2008 by Nick Smith, Daily Post
RAFAEL BENITEZ has warned that winning trophies for Liverpool is becoming more difficult by the year.
The manager won the Champions League in his first season at Anfield and the FA Cup a year later – but he hasn’t won any major honours in the past two years and has failed to get close to launching a title challenge.
But Benitez has hit back at his critics, who have circled once again following an under-whelming start to the current campaign.
Liverpool won their first two Premier League games against Sunderland and Middlesbrough thanks to late winning goals, while they sneaked past Standard Liege in their Champions League qualifier before last Sunday’s dour 0-0 draw at Aston Villa.
However, Benitez has rejected suggestion he is just getting his excuses in early as he looks to overcome the obstacles standing in the way of him finally mounting a genuine title challenge
He said: “People need to understand that to win trophies is really difficult. More and more teams are spending more and more money.
“We will try to be closer and have a lot of confidence because the squad is better, but you can’t guarantee anything. We must make sure we do our best ever time.
“I’m surprised when some of the experts criticise us. They don’t analyse the situation, the bigger picture of the Premier League and the levels of the other teams.
“As a manager, you have to analyse things properly, because you aren’t a fan. You have a responsibility. You can’t just say what people want to hear.
“The Premier League is becoming more and more difficult because so many people are spending money. La Liga is fantastic, but now the Premier League is better and more difficult.
“For us to qualify for the Champions League for five years in a row is important for a club of our stature. We want to win trophies, and to win the Premier League would be amazing. But it’s not easy.”
Benitez has already revealed his feeling that Manchester City could potentially launch a threat to the top four elite after their takeover by Abu Dhabi-based business tycoons the United Group for Development and Investment unlocked a vault of riches for manager Mark Hughes.
It brings into sharp context the Spaniard’s own power struggles with the Anfield hierarchy and the refusal of owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to sanction the money needed to prise Gareth Barry away from Aston Villa in the summer.
But Benitez is still confident in his own squad strengthening despite the resident top two of Manchester United and Chelsea still spending big money in the transfer window.
“If the owners of the clubs keep on spending big, big money, then they will want more and more success. But how many teams can win the title? Just one,” added Benitez.
“So the rest of the teams who spend big money, the owners will realise they haven’t won, so it could be more pressure and more problems for everyone.
“We’re improving the squad every year, the value of the squad has become much better. We know we’re better than before, but maybe the other teams are better also. Look at City, for example.
“As always, it also depends on the other teams. The job isn’t harder, it’s the same. When you are at a top side, you need to be ready to challenge for titles or to be under pressure.
“I don’t have any problem with the pressure. But if people analyse the situation properly, it’s changed a lot because other teams are signing big players.”
But Benitez feels the extra spending power increases pressure on managers and leaves them open to unfair criticism – which he feels he is constantly a victim of because of his selection policies.
He added: “I’m surprised by some things people have said. When I spent a lot of money on Torres, he couldn’t play for a couple of games because he was injured, but everybody was telling me he had to play because I’d spent so much on him.
“But then there was a game of United’s, where they had Hargreaves, Nani and Tevez on the bench, players who had cost £20m and maybe £30m, and nobody said anything.
“At Liverpool, though, if I leave a Torres or a Keane out, then everybody talks about it.”
Liverpool have added a fourth Hungarian to their ranks by taking 17-year-old midfielder Zsolt Poloskei on a season-long loan as part of their arrangement with MTK Hungaria.

Don't rise to it mate. It'll be the same old drivel about "knowing your role" from a 30 year old virgin across the Atlantic, who's closest encounter to a football match was when he rummaged through a rubbish bin and ate a sock.

So guess you are Emerald red's b1tch this season ?  :suspect:

Well said, mate. I'll not get into one, as if I ever do anyway.

It is true, by the way, that the league is getting harder and harder to win. We're not exactly rolling in the cash at the moment, and you have Chelsea, United, and now City throwing it about like it's going out of style in order to get their #1 targets. I'll only start to worry about City once they start putting a few noses out of joint and start to threaten our place. But make no mistake about it: if people are thinking our place out of the top four will be the most under threat if they (City) do eventually emerge, then I think they'd be mistaken. I believe we have a team that is better equipped for that scenario than what Arsenal's current squad is, as I believe we are stronger than them in almost every department with the exception of one area on that pitch. If anyone's place is under threat of not making it to the CL berth, it's them, not us.

Had my pick of Rafa threads to bump and add this little news item.  Another man management coup for Benitez.  This kind of stuff is really starting to worry me. :no

Sami Hyypia: I'll play my part for Liverpool FC despite Champions League disappointment

Sep 8 2008 by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

SAMI HYYPIA today admitted his shock and dismay at being dropped from the Reds Champions League squad until the New Year at least - but hopes he still has a significant part to play in Liverpool's plans this season.

New UEFA regulations mean that eight players from every club’s 25-man Champions League squad must be home grown.

And Hyypia has been the man to make way. When the Reds travel to Marseille next Tuesday, he will be left at home. A new list is not submitted until the knockout stages are reached next year.

Currently on international duty, Hyypia said: “The manager’s decision to leave me out of the squad is a big disappointment for me.

“I understand it’s partly because of the UEFA regulations, but despite that, the news came as a surprise to me and a shock too.

“But the club had a ‘perfect’ timing for this: they didn’t want me to move elsewhere, so that’s why I was told the news of having been left out, just after the transfer window had closed.

“The club went public to say there had been offers for me, but turned them down. So perhaps that means I am still part of the plans for this season.

“I don’t know if I would have wanted to move on, had I heard news about the squad when the window was still open.”

UEFA regulations mean that four players must be ‘association trained’ (ie produced by an English academy) while four must be ‘domestic association trained’ (ie produced by Liverpool’s Academy).

Liverpool’s four ‘domestic’ players are Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Jay Spearing and Stephen Darby, with Robbie Keane, Jermaine Pennant, Steven Irwin and Martin Kelly making up the others.

Spanish international Alvaro Arbeloa is one of the foreign players named in the Champions League squad, and the full-back dismissed speculation over the weekend that he wanted a return to La Liga.

“I don’t know where all the speculation that I am not happy has come from but it is miles from the truth,” Arbeloa declared.

“I am at a massive club.

“I have played in a European Cup semi-final and a final too since I came here. I also broke into the national team through my displays for Liverpool.

“There is competition for places here just the same as there is at any big club. But I know if I play well, play to a really high level, then the manager has confidence in me and will play me in his team.

“I have played anywhere the manager has asked me to play and I will do the same again this season.”

^ Hyypia is a liability now and his lack of concentration led to Lampard's penalty last yr in the CL.  He must realize that he's a fourth choice now and there would be a really small chance of him getting any playing time even if he did get into the squad.

i think he felt disappointed that he wasnt told before the window closed thus ruling out any move to another club which may want him to play in europe.
