Jermaine pennant - Should rafa let him rot?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

guys like penant, ngog, itandje, babel, sisoko, plessis etc in my opinion are just there as faces for the squad....which is why babel will be gone soon, then ngog. why we got rid of pongole is curious when we bought bellamy his partner at blackburn. we all know there is nothing penant can do to change rafas mind, we have seen that no matter what crouch did it made no difference. cisse scored a goal in the f a cup final...made no difference.....i don't like rafa as a person. if only he is  treated as he treats people.

I can understand that he wasn't working well in the 4-2-3-1 last season and Rafa saw Kuyt as his 1st choice on the right being a reason for not using him, but now with us going back to 4-4-2 and Rafa not bringing in an out and out RW is baffling. I'd like to see Babel given a start on the right and see how he does, fair enough Babel isn't a RW but then again can anyone really say what role he has within our squad cos it's clear as day Rafa ain't gonna use him up front. Given his right-footedness and the ability that he does have in getting past fullbacks I think a decent run needs to be given to him on the right to see if he can do a job there. If not then Pennant must be given another chance, he may not set the world alight down that right flank but he's a damn sight better at giving us width than Kuyt (not a dig at Dirk before anyone starts!!  :rasp ), especially in a 4-4-2.

If pennant is sulking over being put up for sale I can sympathise as he hasn't really done anything wrong but both he and Rafa can use the current situation to their advantage. If Rafa were to give him another go in the 4-4-2 then surely Pennant can use it as a way to put himself in the shop window thus getting himself a move to a better team (than Stoke or Blackburn I mean    ) and Rafa gets a solution to our width problem.
That would be in an ideal world though and if Rafa has got a problem with Pennant then his stubborness isn't gonna allow him to flinch and Pennant is just as likely to carry on sulking.

actually Pennant played quite well in his last two league games with the club, scoring a goal in one of them ( I think Fulham away)

I guess it cant harm to give the lad a chance in certaini matches ie bottom table clubs and cc and see how he fares then - if he plays a blinder in the game against crewe then that might give him a chance - if he does get a chance he got to grab it with both hands.

If we continue playing the way we are, I can't see Rafa sticking with Kuyt down the right in a system that is supposed to have wingers. Its got to be either El Zhar or Pennant.  One of the big knocks on Pennant is his lack of a goal threat, but what exactly is Kuyt's Premier League goal threat?  If Rafa had a plan of selling Pennant and maybe using that money for something else, then I can understand why he wasn't playing him. 1 not to risk injury 2, whats the point in developing team chemistry when you plan on getting rid of some of the elements.  Now that he is here to stay he does deserve a shot in the team, especially because I have not been impressed with Kuyt at all.

Doesn't make any sense to play him in the reserves, that would just hinder the development of our young talent.

Bigger question for me is how the hell was Itandje not sold, or did I miss that news?

I'd take Kuyt over Pennant anyday...... At least he'll work his socks off and compensates for his lack of ability (apparent) with a good football brain.

I'll admit that his (Pennant) attitude drives me up the wall at times but that's not the only reason. He's too dumb and temperamental on the pitch. He'll cost us in most games as he cannot control himself and is easily frustrated.

I'd rather play a lame stallion than a thoroughbred donkey.

That's well out of order lad...  :no

What you're implying without a shred of evidence is just plain irresponsible. Many a good man's reputation have been tarred for less than the smear you're implying.

Be careful what you post, faldo. That is really BANG OUT OF ORDER.

Kuyt's too negative at times. He slows down attacks time and time again. I'm not saying that Kuyt doesn't have a purpose, he does (as he proved with his Champions League performances), but with a squad of our size, we need to use horses for courses.

i don't think penant at the moment is good enough to consistently start games, but i think he is a good squad member who has talent but mentally loses focus in games.i see him playing the smaller games like fulham to give the top boys rest. the fact he wants to stay shows he is perfect for that bit part role, rather than people who think they are too good to be a liverpool sub and would rather leave....like bennyawn after 2 games at his new club. ok  bennayoun settled down his attitude and has had his moments.

Agreed mate..... Horses for courses is spot on....... Pennant's not quite a horse IMO though... :D

Play the young ones like El Zhar (been impressed with the boy from what I've seen of him) when we need it..... Youth and hunger to succeed are often prime motivational attributes IF coupled with a modicum of ability.

He doesn't seem to distinguish between big mans and small mans neither mate. Cisse was a expensive signing and he off loaded him, and Alonso was a personal choice of Rafa but also seems he has ended  his good relationship with him.

It seems true though that he fails to keep absolutely everyone happy. But is it such a thing possible in such a big club with so much competition?

At the end of the day, Crouch was an international, and an international normally thinks about playing very regularly. Same applies to Alonso, and almost any professional.
