The difference between us absolutely flying, playing fluent football and scoring freely and the way we are playing right now is no more than about 10%. Passes not quite fizzing, movement not quite sharp enough, control not quite instant, too many safe offlaods, scuffed shots, holding a position instead of filling a new one.
It's hard to believe, but there really isn't much difference between a good side and a bad one. Yes a decent wide midfielder would help, as would a fully fit Gerrard (and those who doubt his importance to the team probably got a wee peek at how wrong they are today) but we just need to be patient. The manager needs to be patient, Robbie Keane isn't any more a left winger than Peter Crouch or Steven Gerrard are, he needs to stick with the ugly winning team. They can't get any uglier (at least one or two don't want to get any uglier anyway) but stick with it and it'll come. We absolutely KNOW that Keane is a top player, just believe in him and he'll repay it in spades. So will the rest of the team, now is not the time for styling, it's time for sticking with the best team available.
I agree with most of your post Mick, the only thing that really has me worried is Robbie Keane. I have never been a great admirer of him, always thought he was a good player but nothing special. So its not just the fact he hasn't clicked so far that has me worried, more that he's not what we needed and he is going to cause more problems than he solves.
I hope I am wrong, but I think we are going to regret signing Keane. He is much slower than I thought and most of his running has little purpose, and for a so called "intelligent" footballer his passing is poor with little creativity. He made one great pass today which just emphasised what we require, rather than what we are getting!
I am not writing him off after 5 games, but I'm not holding my breath for him to be the answer to our prayers either.
We looked totally devoid of ideas and creativity today and unless we get someone in who can make incisive passes or at the very least beat a player we are going to struggle for goals.

Barnes lost his pace around the early 90s and although he stayed quite some time after, his time as a fast winger had past.
McManaman wasn't a winger.
He worked the hole pitch from a central position...
He was a brilliant player, but never a winger.

They are the things that make him a quality player. He's not as quick over 50 yards as some make out, but he's lightening over ten and has the rest in his head.
The lads an excellent player and the pass he played yesterday to Ngog was a signal of things to come from Robbie.
I get frustrated when I hearholes saying he's not upto it. He's scored goals wherever he's been and he's always involved in build up play. You seem to think he lacks vision, you're simply wrong, he doesn't lack vision, if people make runs around him he will spot them and play them in. The thing that people fail to understand is in football, sometimes you can only be as good as the player giving you the ball... and if you aren't getting the ball you're going to look lost.
I thought his performance against Villa was decent, much better than previous, the lads not settled and clearly needs to find his place in the team and get used to playing with Gerrard and Torres, which lets face it, playing with two of the top 7 or 8 players in the world has to be intimidating to anyone.
