I suspect he was relying on bringing in Barry and using his versatility on the left of midfield/left back to provide cover for Dossena to overlap him in our attacking movements
I've also mentioned on another thread that I think we would have been best served by saving the money on Keane (even thought I really like him as a player) and using Babel as a back up for Torres.

We lacked width last season, and scored a high number of goals without it. Now all of a sudden everyone is under performing because they have discovered that they don't have wingers in the squad?

This is how I feel to I said it in many posts my man barnes was the last effective wide player i remeber in a LFC shirt.
Mabye berger was ok but alot of time cut inside to shoot.
Fo Dne just above me stop now we get idea you don't like babel drop now ok.

Al drop it when players like Babel and Kuyt have left the club.
We lack quality in far to many positions and makes our good players look poor. Not to mention Keane's found absoloutely no form of his own as of yet.
We need at least three first teamers before we can challenge, its always the same. We're still miles away.

Babel should be given until the end of this season to prove his worth imo ! ATM he isnt Liverpool standard but having said that i wouldnt be surprised if he turns out to a top class act in years to come if he could improve certain aspects of his game ( movement off the ball and overall vision when picking a pass and deciding what to do with ball at feet).
Kuyt is a whole different story... while hes given it his all in every game hes played he certainly wont ever become a top class player in any position. in my opinion he is only here until we can afford a better replacement.
The main problem i seem to be having with all that has been going on is our signings. While everyone can see that we have some outstanding players in some positions (Gerrard, Mascherano and Torres) we seem to be reluctant or rather unwilling to spend big on players in other positions we need to fill. Problem is not the owners from where i stand, its the manager and his poor decision making in the transfer market.
