The Spanish Tennis Federation, in a meeting before the Olympics:

Image

:D  Outrageous!

What is it with the Spanish?
Institutionalised racism if you ask me.

First Aragones, then some of the English black players got stick,
then Lewis Hamilton got racist jibes, then the Spanish basketball team did the same as the
people above!

Yes, we have seen the Guardian and the Americans are calling us racist because of that. We're a bit surprised but not too bothered. Just in case we asked to the Chinese directly through the embassy and they confirmed there wasn't a single problem in our inoquous advert, while they stated it all was American tactics to unsettle the olympic atmosphere. So if the ones that are supposedly offended are not offended, then the inmediate question is what the fúck are up to the english and american press. It seems that they like to decide what's acceptable and what's racist or not from their saxon perspective and values, which are fine and respectable, but not the ones to set as an universal rule to other countries.

We don't have any problems with the Chinese, and they're a well integrated colony in our country. Chinese people do not need a gun to protect their commerce in our country. They are part of the society smoothly, they learn Spanish at a good rate, they pay their taxes and they mix with the local people.

That sign the team is doing, and the one that did the basketball team, is nothing but a children gesture which has never been offensive nor insulting. Just as we don't mind to be depicted as matadors or flamenco dancers and all black haired in the Hollywood films, we don't see any harm in that childish gesture. There's nothing wrong with having that kind of eyes, they are beautiful if you ask me, it's just a gesture to characterise the Chinese people, who are respected here. It's never an insult unless you insist it is. But the CHinese oficially do not think so. End of story, me thinks.

In the case of the Guardian there's a blatant aim to try to call us racist. They jump from this incident to the Luis Aragones event, instead of digging further in the basketball team who were the ones they were talking about. That basketball team precisely have donated money they've won in awards to the development of basketball in Africa and China, hardly actions of racist people. But the background of that team seems unimportant to the journo, who has more interest in the controversy rather than to finding out if these basketball guys are really racist.

this thing is getting blown out of proportion. there was one article written by one guardian journalist - side lowe, you should know of him sabre - in a neutral and purposefully non-inflammatory style. its worth having a read of his response which is actually quite revealing.

on a more important subject though, the womens heptathlon is babe central. :)

That article is fair enough, and Sid Lowe, for what I've seen him as football commentator in Spain, is a decent enough journalist.

True, the Spanish press have said many of the things Sid Lowe mentions, but not exactly aimed to him but more generally speaking to some press that have talked about racism. Note that some journos, directly asked inquisitorial questions to the players in the press conference, such as "Aren't you going to apologise?" or "aren't you going to rectify", it's that kind of exageration of the issue what has bothered the Spanish.

Spain HAS to deal with racism in some aspects of his society including the sport (racist chants, insults to Hamilton), but definitely not for a harmless gesture.

On the relevant part,

I've seen some Judo women, and I've been paralised with the 100m watching that guy called Bolt. I mean I remember that 9.92 was a great time when Carl Lewis dominated the 100m and that guy has achieved that in such an easy manner!

In the tennis Djokovic gave a hard afternoon to Rafa Nadal. To be perfectly honest I feared that Rafa would lose the game but in the last tight set Djokovic lost the concentration that did have during the second and most of the third set.

I'd go as far as saying that with the proper concentration, Djokovic was superior in that hard surface. But he started the game badly and made the worst mistake when pressure came at the end.

it was another great nadal game, and i really don´t think he deserved to win it this time to be honest. in the second set he played terribly with no energy, very little threat and plenty of errors. you could see how gutted djokovic was at the end, he knew he´d blown it. if nadal doesn´t win gold i´ll eat my own buttocks.

The gymnastics a few days ago was something else, the skill/ dedication/precision needed to achieve that level of performance must be immense - more than most olympic sports. Unbelievable stuff, always is.

The cycling was a turn up for the books, and hopefully we can establish ourselves as the best in the other sprint races.

I couldn't believe Usain Bolt in the 100m heats - he should walk the final if that's any marker.

Then the rowing...we have a three or four clear medal opportunities; the mens fours being the highlight tomorrow, then we're head to head with Canada with in the mens eights on Sunday  :pirate
