Horrendous performance, Pepe salvaged a draw.

Nil attacking threat.

Lack of ideas, lack of focus.

No cohesion, no shape.

Headless chickens.

It's at times like these when I think we're a million miles away from challenging for the title, and actually more likely to be caught by one or two outside the top four.

I know it's only one game, and we were without Mascherano, Babel, Skrtel, and Gerrard from the beginning, but apart from Plessis and possibly Benayoun, every other player is likely to figure significantly in the coming season. Remove two key players from the Manc's, Chelsea, or even Arsenal and I still don't think they'd have the capacity to perform as badly as that.

Our capacity to perform that badly is extremely worrying, and leads me to believe we could have immense difficulty in achieving the requisite level of consistency throughout the season. I could have accepted a 0-0 with a hard-fought performance, with decent passing, an ability to vary it a touch, with a few decent chances, but not one like tonight. Time after time - long balls hopelessly aimed at Torres and Keane. When we did try and play it through the middle, our passing was poor, and we were offered nowhere to go - it broke down too easily when played to Kuyt and Benayoun. Dossena showed signs of very poor defending which I fear may be inherent problems - inability to block a shot (legally at least), track a run, head, get in front of marker etc... Granted, they played very well, but we were miles off the pace.

We go from the comfort of the close-season, looking at potential line ups thinking we're almost there, and then we put in a performance like that?

Throws the mind.

On a positive note  :D we still have every opportunity to qualify, and it's sure to serve as a kick up the arse for the league opener against Sunderland.

I bet Keane is not a success here.

he better be.  We spent a lot of money on him.  too much but if he comes good then we will forget about that.  We are still lacking quality though.

I didn't see a lack of effort tonight, I didn't see players strolling around the park like they thought it was gonna be easy, did you? I saw us struggle against a team playing with their backs up in their biggest game of the season, their cup final with a fantastic crowd behind them. I don't see why everyone is quite so carried away? Look back at the qualifying round for the 2 times we reached the final of this competition. In 2005 we played poorly in Austria but had 2 Stevie wonder-goals save us and then we lost the return leg at Anfield 1-0 and then 2 years ago we had to rely on a late Mark Gonzalez (of all people!) goal to bail us out of trouble.

I understand everyone is frustrated, me too. you wait all summer for some football, you wake up this morning made up coz we gotta game and then you wonder the f...u.ck why! I'm no different but try and find a little perspective.

Sh...it performance, decent enough result in my book. that's not happy clappy or in Rafa we trust or whatever you wanna call it.

the thing that bothered me about tha game the most was the defense , it was absolutly  shocking . Didn't concede though ,don't know how though. We have got to get our sh1t together for Sunderland,or our defense will suffer. We will stuff liege at anfield ,i'm certain . Forget this result and get sorted for Sunderland.

Slickrick is kind of right though, when was the last time a team won the EPL without a quality wide man?  Rafa is depending on Dossena and Arbeloa to give us width, but judging by today's game, I don't think that it's enough.  We desperately need a wide player who can get past defenders and get the ball to Torres and Keane.  Benayoun and especially Kuyt do not do that enough for me, maybe Babel will, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.  I'm still hoping that Rafa will go for someone like Joe Cole or Arda Turan.

I dont think its just down to a performance. Tonight we didnt show anything and our defence looked all over the place.  Just seeing the basics done tonight would of been something.  Some nice passing and a bit of posession but for whatever reason the team looked a mess.
