If this affects Gerrard then the captaincy should be taken away from him, or maybe he could have spent some of his hugely inflated wage bill to help pay for the transfer himself. Rafa screwed this one up, it is not the owners fault. I find it amusing how half the time people on here winge and whine about how badly this club is being run but at the the same time want limitless money made available to Rafa so that he can buy ridiculously overprices players, make your mind up guys!!

1) How has Rafa 'screwed this one up'?

2) This has nothing to do with wanting Rafa to have 'limitless' funds. If we don't have the money available to sign Gareth Barry, make it clear from the beginning. Make it crystal clear that 'this is the budget', you have 'x' amount to recruit players this summer. It the money is available, let him allocate it as he so wishes. If it is available, and the owners aren't prepared to sanction the deal within that agreed budget, we are f*cked. If it depends on selling players, ok - fair enough, it can't go ahead on financial grounds until we've brought in a certain amount through player sales. If we just don't have the money, and there never was in fact a budget, the system is flawed, but again - I can just about accept that.

All the interesting new developments that have emerged with regard to this story in the past couple of days and you want to discuss why the thread is in the rumour mill?  :help

Clearly the thread's not any less "successful" for having been moved.  And, if you must know, it's in keeping with the pattern we've had for all transfer discussions this summer--it'll stay in the rumour mill until such time as the offal announces that Barry's signed. (Otherwise, we'd have to start deciding when a rumour had gained enough credibility to be moved to Gen Discussion, which would no doubt be followed by at least a few "why'd this get moved?" comments from the shadow mods.  :glare: )

its not shadow moderating

i am entitled to ask why something has been moved!

i even gave a reason in my question

No mod is above being asked a question by ANYONE on here, regardless whether you or anyone thinks its pointless. Its not pointless to the questionee. If they (mods) do not like being asked a question, then they should step down. We are ALL EQUAL here.

so i stand by what i said - its not a rumour

suggestion - perhaps it should be moved to general discussion, if it has to be moved at all. just a thought!

=========================

as for the thread - looks like he aint coming to LFC

And I stand by what I said: it's been moved to the rumour mill for  a reason, it'll stay there for the foreseeable and none of this has the least bit of bearing on anyone's ability to discuss the Barry situation.  :suspect:

I agree, Gerrard should not get mad.  If he wanted Barry to join so bad why didn't he make him fill out a transfer request form long ago?  Gerrard knows he didn't fill one out, so all thats left is we tried and he was just another over priced english player.

I dont know how people can just expect Barry to hand in a transfer request, i mean come on its his home town club, the club that gave him his career and the captains arm band and the fans that have adored him and sing his name every week, his family his friends. You cant expect him a model pro to put in a transfer request, im sure right at the start he would have been asured it wouldnt come to that and both party's would come away happy, by that i mean he'll be able to visit friends and family without being lynched.

What is the difference? He has already come out and explicitly stated that he wants to go to Liverpool. It is crystal clear that he wants to play for Liverpool, so what would be the difference if he put in a transfer request? I guess that it would make it an "official" request, but it would still not change the fact that he DOES want to leave. I think that the fans of Aston Villa are upset regardless of whether Barry puts in a transfer request at this stage.

I agree... Is rafa such an idiot as to pursue someone beyond our budget and so relentlessly? someone between the two yanks and parry screwed this up... there's either a communication breakdown which would be parry's fault or the yanks changed their minds and decided to intefere... it's a disgrace that after a long saga parry comes out and say 'oh we can't afford 18 million'... made us a laughing stock... and not to mention we've unsettled a good and decent player who truely believed that he's finally moving to us...

He doesnt want to be painted as the bad guy, if he put in a transfer request villa would have no option but to sell for a "reasonable" sum. Take the Gerrard to chelsea, affair do you think he would have put in a transfer request? no because if he was going to leave he want LFC to be in a strong enough position to get a good fee. Putting in a transfer request isnt the same as saying i'd like to play their to test myself at the highest level its more like saying i dont want to play here anymore full stop, try and understand just because liverpool come calling doesnt mean he should put two fingers up to all those who have supported him over the years. Barry's entirely blameless in all this, he's remained a model pro, try and remember he's a villa fan too.

hes remained a pro? he puts in a transfer request and we knock 3mill off the fee. hes waiting for his nest egg, pro my ar$e

18million is too much for him, let him stay at villa til he shows how much he really wants to come

Where does this common consensus that putting in a transfer request suddenly means you can be sold for less money come from?

Do you guys actually think O'neil would have dropped the price to 15 million the moment he got a piece of paper from the player? Not a chance. It's been 18 million fomr the word go and that would not have changed. I think O'neil/Lerner have been VERY clear on this.

Besides even if it were the case Barry would be crazy to put his trust in our owners coming through with a £15 million fee wouldn't he? Would you burn all your bridges with the hometown fans who have supported you for 10+ years?
