According to BBC website we now can't afford to buy him as the Yanks have failed to find the finances...this is laughable

Signing Barry gives the Yanks a chance to send out a clear message to LFC fans. Spending best part of £40m (although net a lot less when you consider who's been sold) on Rafa's 2 top targets whilst keeping our top players (i.e. Alonso) gives us the best chance of competing at the top of the EPL.

We have a real chance this year and hopefully the Yanks see that -

Best squad we've had for many seasons (Agger back, Keane and Barry (hopefully), good crop of potential 1st team youngsters)
Man Utd have multiple injury/illness problems
Chelsea have new management

All bowds well for us

:)

I'd be watching Arsenal this season, prob. more so than Utd. or Chelsea. I've seen bits and pieces of their pre-season build-up and the young lads Wenger has signed up or brought thru the academy are top notch.
Who ever said you'd win nothing with kids ? Could be eating his words by the end of this season...

If anyone's still paying attention, this is the latest rumour.

BARRY TO PULL PLUG ON POOL MOVE?

Gareth Barry is reportedly ready to pull the plug on his propose move to Liverpool unless a deal is concluded in the next eight days.

With the new Premiership season looming, The Times claims that Barry is, understandably, worried that his long-anticipated transfer has still not been concluded. Liverpool's first bid for the midfielder was made in May and over a week has passed since Martin O'Neill reluctantly announced that Barry could leave so long as Liverpool met his £18m valuation. Yet, far from signalling the end of the saga, Liverpool's failure to contact Villa since then has raised fresh doubts about their ability to conclude the deal.

'Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, has been waiting patiently for Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr to produce the cash promised to him last week, but that has yet to materialise amid rumours that the club's American owners have run into more financial difficulties, claims that were strenuously denied yesterday,' The Times declares.

The sale of Xabi Alonso would have financed the purchase of Barry but the Spaniard's exit cannot be sanctioned following an injury to Steven Gerrard. With Javier Mascherano on Olympics duty, Alonso will be required for next week's Champions League qualifier in Belgium. After also ruling out the sale of either Yossi Benanyoun or Dirk Kuyt, Benitez's hopes of raising the money required to recruit Barry will thus be dependent on selling Jermaine Pennant and Andriy Voronin.

The good news for Benitez is that Liverpool's transfer kitty currently contains around £10m. The bad is that he has yet to receive a single offer for either player and, according to The Times, an 'increasingly concerned Barry is not willing to wait much longer.'

365 Article

I still expect we'll get him before the month's out but this saga is beyond a joke now.  Never that fussed to begin with (prefer Alonso obviously :D ) but I was happy to have him join up if he'd add something to the team.  The more this drags, though, the more I wonder just how he'll be able to hit the ground running if/when he does sign.

And, then, there's the larger picture about what this confirms about our current owners.  Unwilling or unable to put their hands in their pockets for a few million to get a player their manager has been asking for since May?  Cheers, lads.  Last summer they were strutting like peacocks urging Rafa to sign Snoogy Doogy.  This summer we have to hold a car-boot sale before we can make any moves.  T0ssers.

eBay !! Put Voronin and Pennant up on eBay immediately....Who knows - we might even get an offer of £5.26 (that's UK pounds, not MILLION) for Voronin.....

Well, I for one am astonished that fans actually think that the owners will stump up cash in any kind of form giving what has transpired the past 10 months.

Tired of too many saying things like:

"Well, if Rafa wants the players I'm sure the owners will back him"

"Even if we have a net spend of zero this summer it's all a smoke screen Rafa needing to sell to buy."

"The Barry deal will happen anyday and I am sure there is money stashed away to buy a top winger also."

These are lies, lies, lies and the sooner some starts accepting
the ownership situation the better.
The yanks are here to stay, unless the get around a billion(meaning forever or until they are forced to leave).
It has been quite clear for some time that we have now interest payments up to 30 million a year(will get worse)
and money for transfers will be extremely limited.

And still some prefer to be ignorant and says things like:

"No matter if Rafa gets 0 to spend each summer not winning the title is unacceptable".

"Now that the ownership situation has calmed down all the pressure is on Rafa"(no matter that nothing really has been solved and that he won't get any backing).

Wake up and smell the coffee!

Hes just spent 20 Mil on Keane, 8 on Dossena, 3 on the Keeper.

Its not like we've had no money ATALL, and hes spent over 150 million pounds during his time here. Yes we ALL know its not as much as Man U and Chelsea but still.

BTW if there isnt any money in the kitty it usnt Rafas fault obviously. It means he has to spend a bit more wisely.

Same old usual :censored:.This is the second time also Stevie has come out and said "im desperate for x to come and play for us". He was chatting that same :censored: when we were linked with Owen a few seasons back.

The truth is yet again out lack of funds has resulted in us not signing enough decent players.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

ok, so painted the sky a bit dark  :)

But I still feel it's worth pointing out.

If we hadn't sold Crouch, Carson, Guthrie, Risse Keane
would not be here.

And about barry:

I agree with Dawson99. barry have got to do what Keane did simple as that.

As far as I know we made a few bids early last months and
the numbers are just guesses, but I believe we made no bid higher than 15 million.

After that Rafa and lfc has gone quit on the issue and it been the MON show after that with him bitching and whining every other day in the media.

But nothing at all have come out from our end.
Nothing to suggest we are even close to meeting their demands.

And I don't think we ever will. But if barry now wants to come so much, handing in a transfer request might lower the fee to a more acceptable figure.

With Alonso still at the club me personally don't see the need for him though.

In the echo it said that the yanks are still unsure what Barry will bring to the team.

Seriously, what the F do the Yanks know about football? so know they know better than the manager?
