And about the Barry transfer, lets get it done I say. Know one else I reckon would fit into our system. Van Der Varrt is most likely going to Madrid, Silva is small and will take time to settle and I dont want Downing.

He is also proven prem quality much like Keane, better to buy these types of player than some no mark from France etc etc.

Gareth Barry is not worth 20 mil and another english player who is way overrated who probably no-on on the continent has ever heard of him and wonder why LFC are ready to pay £20 mil for an English no mark.

I wonder if the mancs are moaning about the money they shelled out on Carrick or Hargreves? oh no thats right they won the league.

difference is they have the luxuary to go and spend that kind of money on that type of player.  We do not.  We have to scramble to try and raise the money. If thats all we got I would like to a better quality of player than Barry brought in.  Barry isnt even better than Alonso.

£20m for a 28 year old striker and then £20m for an over-rated 27.5 year old midfielder.

General rule of thumb, fees are about 50% more than a player is worth these days. Not always true, but seems to fit in nicely with a fair few

£16.5m Bent/Modric (£11m + 50%)
£20.3m Keane (£13.5m + 50%)
£18m Barny (£12m + 50%)
£30m Ferdinand (£20m + 50%)
£17m Hargreaves (£11.3m + 50%)
£11m Crouch (£7.3m + 50%)
£15m Bentley (£10m + 50%)
£6.7m Pennant (£4.5m + 50%)

And Barny is not clearly better than Alonso, plus the Spaniard is nine months younger. I reckon he'll have a better season this time around with a run in the side, not convinced Barny will make a smidgeon of difference. I'd risk paying £16.5m for Modric or £15m for Bentley, or a striker like Santa Cruz. I wonder what Santa Cruz would have cost, what with being nearly a year younger than Keane. Citeh may answer that question, it's rumoured they're after him

MON is going to look like a right tw@t when Barry eventually signs (probably in the next 48 hours) after coming out with comments like "we're delighted Barry is staying" etc etc. The man has lost the plot :p

He built a great reputation whilst in Scotland, calm, wise and successful. On teh whole that reputation has remained intact whilst at Villa. But surely everyone is asking WTF over the way he has handled teh Barry transfer.

If ManUre are looking for a replacement for Ferguson at the end of next season they must be wondering whether MON has lost his marbles. You have to question his strategy, its been well strange and I'm not sure I'd hand over a club as influential to him now.

Gareth Barry will be a Liverpool player at the weekend

By Colin Wood Last updated at 11:44 PM on 31st July 2008

Gareth Barry believes his £19million move to Anfield will be finalised over the weekend once Aston Villa accept a re-structured offer.

Barry, thought to have already found a house to rent in Cheshire to be close to Liverpool's Melwood training ground, trained with Villa yesterday but did not figure in a behind closed doors friendly against Notts County.

However, despite Villa's public insistence that he will be staying, the England international is confident his protracted move is imminent.

Villa accepted Liverpool's bid of £17.5m plus £1.5m-rated defender Steve Finnan on Wednesday but after a bank guarantee failed to arrive at the agreed time they told Liverpool the deal would have to be paid in two instalments instead of the originally agreed three.

Liverpool, who will find out their Champions League opponents in today's draw in Switzerland, have since been working with their banks to make the deal happen while friends say Barry, 27, is furious with Villa's attitude.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill has been angered by the manner of Liverpool's approach and is determined to put up a fight, though.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez made his interest public in May and Barry's outburst in a Sunday paper, attacking Villa boss Martin O'Neill and confirming his desire for Champions League football with Liverpool, inflamed the situation.

Benitez, who has raised £20m from the sales of Peter Crouch, John Arne Riise, Scott Carson and Danny Guthrie, believed he would have to sell again to finance any other buys. But owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett authorised more borrowing to secure Barry. He will, however, raise a further £5m by selling Jermaine Pennant to Blackburn - failing any last-minute intervention from Portsmouth. Pennant, 25, joined Liverpool from Birmingham for £6.7m two years ago.

Unfortunately not a single quote to add any substance :(

While I think MON has acted like a bit of a tw@t, he has tried against all the odds to stop his best player leaving. If nothing else, the next time someone comes in for his best player they will certainly be aware that he will moan and groan to the press over every little slight, and may decide its easier raiding Blackburn or Bolton for a player instead   :D

I know if someone came in for Torres or Gerrard I would expect(hope) Rafa to fight to keep them. Hopefully with a little more class but I would want him to try.

FWIW, and you can quote me on this, the most overpriced player of the Summer in my opinion is David Bentley. The prices for both Keane and barry (Barny if you must) are top dollar but not ridiculous in my opinion. I really think people are underestimating how good these two are, and how much difference they will make to us. Keane has cost 5 mill more than we paid for Cisse four years ago, while Barry has cost exactly the same and Man Utd paid for Carrick and Hargreaves. It's only because we can all think of exotic sounding foreign based players who sound relatively cheap in comparison, but as i keep saying with these two blokes we're getting proven quality.

Time will tell of course, but I think they on't prove to be bad value when push comes to shove.

rose tinted glasses mate. Bentley was a lot, but hes 4 years younger than keane and has a head on his shoulders and a shedload of talent in the trunk.

if we are talking over priced player of the summer, id say modric... or whoever chelsea are about to waste a shed load of money on. bentley tho is a class signing

Agreed completely.

I think he's an above average/good player but nowhere near good enough to be worth that. Can't see what all the hype surrounding him is all about.

Well time will tell daws. It's the same as people who think Silva would go well over here, it's all about an opinion. This time next year we'll have a better idea, and I've no doubt that Bentley has talent, but my feeling is that Wenger doesn't let too many players who are worth fifteen or sixteen million quid slip through his grasp as youngsters. A good player but not much better than a decent prem midfielder is my call, but we'll see.

Quote from Shankslegend on RAWK :

'Not gonna mention any names but if the Barry deal falls through, Rafa has an excellent replacement in mind someone who isn't as old and in my eyes is far better and accomplished.

If you think hard enough you will get it.... But you will have to think quite a lot.'

He also goes on to say that the younger option is left footed, and can play both in central midfield and on the wing. Oh and he's not English.

I think we need super Andy G to solve this one (although I am hoping its Van Der Vaart) I think the clue is in the "But you will have to think quite a lot" which rhymes with good shot and as Van der Vaart had a good shot in the Euro's its obviously him....... :D ..............Andy........help?
