You don't know the background story. Perhaps like Gerrard, he was trying to force the club into giving him a new deal. However, the whole thing backfired in his face. Gareth Barry nor his agent were expecting for Martin O'Neill to act the way he did and Barry felt like he was being forced out of the club he loves and has spent his whole career at, much like our dear old Captain felt when Benítez and Parry failed to bring him any sort of a contract at the beginning of the summer of 2005.

In Gerrard's case it was declaring a transfer request and Parry going public with it, that eventually got Chairman Moores involved.

But Gerrard was wanted, by the fans and management. And henceforth he stayed. Barry was faced with a manager with higher priorities (commentary for the euros). No comparison in my opinion.

who the :censored: does MON think he is? lets just stick to the transfer deadline rather than some poxy deadline he has dreamed up trying to force our hand. the problems here are of his own making trying to stand up to the big boys and its just made him look an idiot, we will buy him when we re good and ready martin, not because you make some poxy demand. this thing would have been sorted ages ago if it wasnt for his behaviour trying to get an extra couple of million for a player not worth that much.

f*ck MON right in the ear the despicable little c*nt

Villa then put out a statement on their website confirming that Barry would be staying. It read: 'This evening, Aston Villa can announce that Gareth Barry will be staying with the club following the interest from Liverpool over recent months.

'During discussions in the past few days, a final deadline to conclude this episode was set that all parties were aware of and agreed to. This deadline has now passed and so Gareth will remain with Villa.'

However, it soon transpired that the two clubs were still talking over the move

now they're saying we've sealed it...

THE amazing Gareth Barry transfer saga took a bizarre turn last night when Liverpool caved in to Aston Villa’s demands — 15 minutes too late.

Two days of intense talks took place with Villa holding out for £18m cash.

A 5pm deadline was set by Villa but when Liverpool failed to meet it, Villa immediately released a statement saying that the England star was staying.

It read: “Aston Villa can announce that Gareth Barry will be staying with the club.

“A final deadline to conclude this episode was set that all parties agreed to. This deadline has passed so Gareth will remain with Villa.”

The speed in which Villa closed the debate stunned Liverpool and Barry, 27, but the Kop remain determined to get the midfielder.

They had agreed to pay £18m but there was haggling over the methods of payment and Liverpool asked for a small deadline extension.

Villa chief Randy Lerner refused and, even though Liverpool had everything in place by 5.15pm, Villa would not negotiate further.

Barry is determined to play Champions League football and Arsenal could now renew their interest with a player-exchange deal.

Liverpool’s £20m new-boy Robbie Keane made his debut in last night’s friendly in Spain against Villarrea

Gerrard      Masch        Alonso        Barry

Not really a weakness anywhere in that team !

Playing two of your best players in their secondary positions respectively doesnt bode well with me.

I said before, why move Carra to accomodate Skertel. Carra is a rock there and he formed a nice partnership with Agger before the Danes injury. Skertel is good but lacks
concerntration and anticiapetion in vital moments of a game, therefore hes more prone to causing us a clanger of detrimental effect. Carra is a natural born leader who will not only do his job well, but talks alot along the back of the line. I dont know whether Agger or Skertel are vocal enough and can organise things at the back aswell as Carra can.

I dont think Gerrard playing on the right is his best position. Take out Alonso and stick Stevie there would be good, but then we've got no real quality out wide on the right.

The line-up looks strong I'll give you that S@int, but I dont think the team would be at its strongest or best unless you had both the Scousers in the center of their respective postions.

In saying though it wouldnt suprise me atall to see Rafa try soemthing like this and prove me wrong ... For once  :D

He's the manager of Aston Villa. He's in charge of managing the personnel under his leadership. He has the right to negotiate wages, set up tactics, etc. etc. It's within his power to set deadlines if another club wants to swoop in and take one of his best players. Do you really expect anything less if we had been in this situation and Benítez was going to sell Gerrard?

lets just stick to the transfer deadline rather than some poxy deadline he has dreamed up trying to force our hand.

Well, while their's a transfer deadline, I think he's attempting to set a time date by which he knows when, where and what kind of squad he'll have come September when the campaign really kicks off. I think it's only fair that he asks us to buy him now, considering it would give him time to go shopping for a replacement.

the problems here are of his own making trying to stand up to the big boys and its just made him look an idiot, we will buy him when we re good and ready martin, not because you make some poxy demand. this thing would have been sorted ages ago if it wasnt for his behaviour trying to get an extra couple of million for a player not worth that much.

I think thats what Chelsea thought when Gerrard was trying to stir the Board and Benítez into giving him a new contract post-Istanbul. They continue to think, according to the same people's annoyances (you are not the first one to spout this belief about Barry) that they can buy anyone they want on thier own schedule. Have we become that dreaded monster so many of us hated in the Summer of 2005?

What is so wrong with Villa setting a deadline which all parties agreed to?

Cant say i disagree with you at a certain point. Anyway, did u notice any child-like behaviour coming from benitez during that Chelshit-Gerrard saga back then? i don't think so. It's not  about setting deadlines and etc., it's his conduct in the media for months that pisses  us off.

If the deal does ever go through i feel this would be our strongest line up

                 Reina
Arbeloa      JC       Agger    Dossena

        SG        Masch      Barry

        Kean     Torres      Babbel

Know that team could challenge for the EPL

I hope thew deal is dead and buried. I'd rather keep Alonso. He wasn't on the pitch for long last night, but he still found time to deliver a few deadly passes which nearly finished with goals.

Personally i'm very disappointed that we have'nt signed Barry, i'm guessing Keane is the last of our transfers or else Rafa will be rushing to sign cover players. I think Alonso is an amazing player but he has been inconsistent. But i think he can still do the job. So we have 5 CM's Lucas, Gerrard, Masch, Plessis and Xabi...not too bad.
