Well Alonso will be happy about this one. :D  (and lando)

I know Villa have came out and said he is staying but for some reason I think we still haven't heard the end of this yet

hopefully finnan will stay and xabi as well - both good players for us

Why didn't he just hand in a transfer request like Keane did ?

He has left himself in a very uncomfortable position now but knowing how fickle football fans can be he will probably be welcomed back with open arms ???

I still think that Raffa will get him, all this could be a sneaky move by Villa to get Liverpool to pay what they wanted for him, why was there no mention of this deadline before now ?

In what has turned out to be a dramatic day with reports earlier suggesting fee has been agreed for Gareth Barry’s move to Liverpool, Aston Villa have now declared that their captain is staying.

The 27-year-old England international had earlier been the subject of Reds’ repeated offers, but Villa remained firm on the reported £18m valuation, and did not get the right bid to sanction the sale despite the player being keen to move.

Earlier today, reports were rife that a £19m deal was in place to take Barry to Anfield with right-back Steve Finnan heading the other way in a cash plus player offer. But the reports have proved to be false.

Villa have now come out with a definite statement that the long-serving midfielder, who had also been reported to be interesting Arsenal, will stay at Villa Park.

“This evening, Aston Villa can announce that Gareth Barry will be staying with the club following the interest from Liverpool over recent months,” the club said in a statement.

“During discussions in the past few days, a final deadline to conclude this episode was set that all parties were aware of and agreed to. This deadline has now passed and so Gareth will remain with Villa.”

Sounds to me like a fee was agreed, but we hadn't got the money (still awaiting outgoing sales)and so couldn't complete the deal.

I am happy that he is not coming because like some other people on here I am more interested in Liverpool spending the money on a winger, like Silva.

However, with Babel playing on the left and maybe progressing well into that position, would we be better off to get someone who can play on the right?

well with babel being right footed he can play there as well - in fact babel and silva could switch during games and there is also kuyt as the more solid on e- gives us good options and mix

LOL

Villa fans are celebrating this as if Jesus is returning to Earth.

Fact remains, their club captain wants out.

We should go for Silva now, or just fook the lot and keep Alonso and make no further signings.

Great news! I'm glad we spent the dosh on Keane, a good striker which we needed, rather than Barry, a player we don't.  I'll be chuffed if we can now sign a quality wide man.

Liverpool were prepared to match Villa's asking price but the stalling point to negotiations was exactly how the fee should be paid.

With the two clubs still haggling over the arrangement, Villa made their announcement.

But talks are believed to be still ongoing to enable 27-year-old Barry to make the switch to Anfield.

Midfielders Jermaine Pennant, Yossi Benayoun and Xabi Alonso could all be sold to finance the deal.
