As Woof said recently said, I don't think I could bear Arshavin signing for us. With a player with that name and a cow-owner called Gillette, the jokes would be unbearable. :D

On the topic of Germans, I reckon Lahm would be a good addition.  He can play in either full back position and would be a good replacement for Risse.

He would be an excellent option, but unfortunately it's a big no go, as he has just signed a new contract with Bayern Munich before the EC started. He only had a year left and was supposedly close to agreeing a move to Barcelona, but ended up staying at Bayern. Great player though.

Yup.  Signed with them just before the World Cup from FC Koln.  Apparently. he's only scored 17 goals in 72 appearances for them, which might explain why he's linked with Spurs rather than a top club.  I'm sure his fee will go up after doing well in Switzerland-Austria but he'd still be a cheaper option than Villa, I reckon.

Podolski has mostly played second string to Klose and Toni this season, and the season before that he wasn't a regular aswell, as far as I remember. Would be quite a good shout I reckon, but only for the right price. He's not worth nearly as much as Villa imo.

Interesting.  I would have thought that Klose and Toni were a bit too similar to play much together but there you go.  I wouldn't pay more than we paid for Torres, certainly, but I do think he'd make us considerably stronger up top and that we would not regret splashing some significant cash (around about the amount we'll end up paying for Barry, for instance) on the lad.

his fee definitely won't be as high as Torres... that's why I think he's value for money cause he's still young... I'd pay 15 million THE most for him but it won't even be that high... I suppose 12 million should most definitely seal the deal... he was bought by Bayern for 10 million euros.

on second thought, him saying he would be interested in a move to Spurs might just be him hinting at his current club that they should take him more seriously...

Keep the far superior Alonso, and buy Villa with the Barry money...

Its the only thing that makes sense Lando ive been sayin for ages form is temperary class is permenant.

What does class do for the team? Does it wins you matches ? Lets look at the bigger picture , class does not win you premier league titles , form does and that what alonso has clearly been lacking for the past 3 seasons .

Of course class counts, im not sayin hes the saviour but we shouldnt be gettin rid of a player with the abilty of Alonso we should be keeping them type of players and adding, Different games suit different players. We want quality running right through the squad not just the first team. AN im not saying Xabi is not a first teamer cause he is imo, But its heartbreakin to see us having to sell a quality player just to buy.

I mean ok Barrys a good player like but i prefer Xabi

Barry hasnt exacly set the world alight an it looks like were the only ones bidding for him,

Firstly nanny , he has the ability but it has gone missing for the past 3 seasons if you have not noticed . No point in keeping a player who is past it when we have a decent offer on the table for him . Secondly , you've claimed that barry has not set the world alight but he is want of the most consistent performers in the england and villa team . The same barry that is keeping a 18 million carrick and hargreaves and also lampard out of the side and also i doubt alonso has set the world alight either .

I said he'd of been a useful addition about two years ago.  :eyebrow

Well then you were right.  He had a good World Cup in 06 but is even better in these European Championships.  Plus, he's been seasoned nicely with 2 years at a big club.   He'd cost a fair wad of cash but probably would not be in the Villa or Eto'o bracket.  Plus, his game would suit the Prem, IMO.

Not really sure that he would cost alot , he has been on the bench for bayern most of this season and i'm surprised that he is a starter and like spurs have bid 10 million or so for him , i'm sure that willl be enough

John Barry is a fine composer, and Manhattan enjoyed his work on the James Bond movies.

But I'm not convinced he'd make a good footballer.

The very same Barry who has made only a handful of appearances in friendlies and the odd qualifying appearance. Lets not build him up to be what he isnt.

Meaningless friendlies aside, England have hardly been unbeatable with Barny in the side. We're not in the Euros and we had every chance of getting there presented to us - we took none. I'm not blaming Barny, but just because he is in the side doesn't mean Barny is better than players he's been picked ahead of. Much has been made of the relationship between Gerrard and fat frank, it was inevitable there'd be experimentation

Barry & England's qualifying stumble

ENG 3-0 ISR
ENG 3-0 RUS
ENG 3-0 EST
RUS 2-1 ENG
ENG 2-3 CRO

Two crunch games in which Barny played we lost, that was no more down to him individually than he is better than fat frank, Hargreaves or Carrick. However fat frank has a nack of doing nothing in a match except score goals, no goals from either could explain our exit as much as defensive errors etc. Barny's defensive prowess didn't help prevent us concede FIVE goals in two games
