??? Hes the Captain of the club and one of their few most consistent players, add to that the fact that he is receiving rave reviews for his England performances and it is no surprise that the fee is close to 20 Million. Time will tell if he is worth it or not but we got Degen for free and he got slated before he has even played a minute for us, we then pay 7 Million for some hardly known Italian deffender who also hasn't played a minute for us and the general feeling is he is going to be great ( possibly because he will be replacing the fans favourite Riisse ! ) Barry it seems will be replacing Alonso so automatically it is considered  a bad move. Like it or not Raffa seems to really want Barry so it looks like he will get him and lets not forget that Raffa rates Crouch at 15 Million ,Crouch to is an England International and that seems to be one of the main reasons that Barry's price will be so high yet Crouchs price is getting lower. Its just a shame that apparently the Yank Muppets haven't realised that

We'll sell Torres for 20M and then we'll have enough money to buy Barry.

its funny, everyone slates the media and praises rafa, then as soon as the media says we will spend 20 mill they all slate rafa.

in Rafa we trust people, some people said 20mill for torres was insane and that he wouldnt cut it.

im choosing to have complete faith, if rafa says  barry will add considerably to the squad, then we'll spend what we need to to buy him

Its not that Daws the fee is Chelsea territory and if we where used to throwing money at players ala chelsea we wouldnt bat an eyelid.

But we havent got money to burn and most of us know where are problem areas are and its not in the centre of midfield.

The midfield is not broken why fix it?

We need another striker and atleast a world class winger.

I think everyone would be happy if we added just two world class players.

The good news is that would mean we can reach a 20M signing this  summer.

The bad news is that beforehand I can think of better players with that money, for specific roles.

But, Rafa surprised many in my country when he splashed that amount for Torres, and Rafa was spot on.

Rafa insisted to bring a player not used in West Ham and he was spot on.

So I don't dare to say that Rafa will not make a massive spot on movement with this transfer, because he has surprised me before.

But I have to agree that it's hard to swallow.

Liverpool close in on Villa's Gareth Barry with £18m bid
Jun 12 2008 By Rob Tanner

The Gareth Barry saga may be reaching a finale but it may not the conclusion Aston Villa fans hoped for as Liverpool are reportedly preparing a bid of £15 million, plus a further £3 million in clauses.

The Villa captain’s agent, Alex Black, stated this week that Barry had informed Villa he desired Champions League football and Barry is said to have told Villa manager Martin O’Neill he wanted to leave during a telephone call.

That switched a green light for Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez to submit another bid after offers of £10 million and £12 million were rejected. Although Liverpool denied the bid yesterday, and Villa said there had been no change, it is understood the fresh bid is imminent.

The cash-only offer is believed to be closer to O’Neill’s own assessment of his captain’s worth, although some reports suggest Villa rate the player in the £20 million bracket. On Tuesday, Villa issued a statement confirming Barry’s wish was to leave.

Earlier this week, Liverpool announced losses of £33 million for last season and Benitez will not have the funds to bring in the players that will turn them from top-four finishers to genuine title contenders. The move for Barry will be financed by the sale of Xabi Alonso to Juventus.

Alonso has been given permission to move to the Turin giants, who are likely to pay the £16 million price in instalments.

In contrast, under chairman Randy Lerner and manager O’Neill, Villa are the Premiership club making the biggest strides and while O’Neill has been realistic enough to state that they are probably not top-four contenders at present, Villa have the potential to make a serious challenge in the next few years.

Benitez has made it repeatedly known that he is a big admirer of Barry, who has become an England regular. To reinforce his growing reputation, he scored his first goal for his country and wore the captain’s armband during the recent trip to Trinidad and Tobago.

Liverpool captain Steve Gerrard has also repeatedly voiced his opinion by stating he would love to team up with Barry at the heart of the Liverpool midfield.

Gerrard said recently: “Gareth will improve Liverpool. We can’t be disrespectful to Villa. He is still their player and we will see what happens. Naturally, they are going to try and keep hold of him, and rightly so because he is one of their star men.

"He has been a fantastic servant for them over many years. But, from a biased point of view, I want Gareth to become a Liverpool player. I want Liverpool to be as strong as possible and Gareth will certainly make us stronger.”

The completion of Barry’s move to Anfield will bring to a close a protracted period of speculation that has tested the patience of O’Neill and the Villa supporters, who have grown tired of the saga and Barry’s position as a terrace hero has diminished.

O’Neill has fought a valiant battle to keep his star player and initially launched a war of words with Benitez about Liverpool’s courting of Barry, and even accused the Merseysiders of showing a lack of respect.

However, the affair has proven once more that players have all the power and if they want to move, they can engineer a transfer.

Well, it's not only Rafa but admittedly the captain aswell who want to play with Barry.

It's always important to bring players that get along well with your players if you want to keep those players settled. If the captain thinks we have to improve and Barry is the man for it, and I'm the manager, I have to at least listen  to what the captain says.

We never know the ins and outs of what's going in the dressroom. I for instance remember an informative PM of Saint a while ago, informing me about a raw or something between Alonso and Gerrard (a rumour he heard). To be honest, and I told him so, I was sceptical as always with these rumours. But this move, these quotes, make sense in that scenario, I have to say.

Well, if the manager and the captain say it's the right move, at least I'll give them the benefit of doubt. Walk on...

Just a few things, Barry is world class, he's captained England ( friendly but none the less ) and scored, in the game before he put in a beautiful pass to set up Gerrard to score, he'll improve us in the prem, he's as comfortable in 3 different possitions 4 if you add wing back and playing anyone of those roles will score more and add more threat than Xabi Alonso in the prem. To me it shows rafa is thinking more about the prem and Barry will defiantly improve us in that comp. Depending on who else comes in i think we'll see him a lot on the left wing with an attack minded fullback ( Dossena, Insua ) behind.

I know this is somewhat unrelated, but it is just really :censored: me off right now that Chelsea is easily willing to throw down 100 million and we have to scrap and sell for just 20-30 million.
