OWEN: MY REAL BATTLE BEGINS Aug 15 2004
MICHAEL OWEN completed his £8million move to Real Madrid facing a huge battle for a first-team place.
Owen will fight Raul, Fernando Morientes and Brazilian star Ronaldo.
The England star said: "I'm looking forward to the challenge.
"Raul, Ronaldo and Morientes are three of the best strikers in the world.
"I'm very aware how hard I will have to work to get an opportunity here. But it is a fantastic challenge and I can't wait to pull on the famous Real Madrid shirt, because I'm now playing for the best team in the world."
Owen will wear the number 11 shirt vacated by Javier Portillo and knows he faces a major fight to establish himself as a first team regular.
Portillo was a prolific striker at youth level for Real Madrid, but last season he started just three games before being farmed out on loan to Italian Serie A side Fiorentina.
Owen added: "My dad has been telling me about the great Real Madrid players of the 1960s.
"He says Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas were unbelievable and that Paco Gento used to be the quickest in the land. That is why I am so proud to be wearing the number 11 shirt.
Real president Florentino Perez admitted that Owen would have to fight for his place in the side.
He said: "He has to accept no guarantees come with the shirt.
"There are many games in the season and all of the players will face the same challenge."
id love him back tomorrow
