Sounds like the Editor has had one too many De Konincks, mate....And probably a crate or two of your famous Trappiste beers...
I gotta ask though - what's the deal with putting mayonnaise on chips ? Surely there's a law against such wanton sacrilege ?

Of the unseeded teams, in terms of quality, I'd say Liege are about mid range, it could've been better (Ventspils/Brann/Aalborg/Modrica/Anorthosis/BATE...), but it could've been worse (Atletico/Kiev/Galatasaray/Prague/Partizan..)

It's only a short trip to Belgium, weather conditions should be moderate, and they don't seem to be renowned for having hostile fans, which is important. With the opening league game only 3/4 days after the first leg, it's important we avoided far flung destinations/extreme weather conditions/dodgy/hostile places.

We know we'll be playing a team who won their domestic league last season, so there's no room for complacency with what's at stake.

A good draw for us overall.

It can't be sacrilege because we invented chips. In American films they are talking about French fries, but they are Belgian. The Americans and the British came here during the war and most of them were stationed in the southern part of Belgium or Wallonia. In Wallonia the Belgians served the soldiers their speciality, chips or fries. But in Wallonia they speak French so some of the not so clever soldiers thought they were in France because nobody seemed to speak 'Belgian'. I'm so relieved that's out  :D

And to answer your question, it's true that MOST of the Belgians prefer mayonaise on their chips (as do I), but we also use other sauces.

To give this message a on-topic-twist: I think the Reds are going to beat the Reds from Liège  :p

I'm pretty pleased with that draw, I don't believe Liege have any record in the Champions League to speak of, the only Belgian sides I know have any kind of form are :

Anderlecht : QFs x1, L16 x2, L32 x5
Brugges : QFs x1, L16 x0, L32 x3
Genk : L32 x1
Lierse : L16 x1

They were runners-up in the CWC back in 1982, in European terms they're not up to much. I've heard of a few of their players, not many. Onyewu might be the most well known as I think Fulham tried to sign him last season.

Did you know Stiffler is their Chairman? :D

Heimdall I'm not insulting you mate it's a reference to your post about the "Brummie turd" on another thread. I commented at the time that it was the first time I'd heard the word "turd" in ages and it cracked me up. I also said that I was gonna start using it every opportunity.

Sorry bud, absolutely no offence intended I assure you.

OK no problem, it is a good word though isn't it.  :D

Mayonnaise on chips is awesome, once you try it you can't go back to anything else. :buttrock

Oh and btw I am fairly confident we'll beat Liege.

as some have said, its not the worst draw, but not the best either. They won the Belgian league and are no mugs in terms of quality....so we'll have to field a strong side in both legs

In many ways I think it's the absolute perfect draw for us. Firstly we'll win in the end which is handy, and secondly they are decent enough to discourage any silliness when it comes to picking the team. I only hope that we have learnt our lesson with these matches and we put out a fairly strong team in the first leg over there. Win over there two or three nil, and me and Leon can make our first appearances of the season in the return at Anfield. That's the type of rotation I can deal with, put the tie to bed and then give the squad a go in the second leg.

What we definately don't need are any Macabi Hiafa catastrophes, where we end up having to rest players in premiership matches in order to ensure we qualify. Get the job done with near to our best team, then field the same team at Sunderland and win there. Lets not feck ourselves out of the blocks yet again.
