Plasma's do look better when you see them next to LCD screens but the screen burn problems that plasma's suffer is a big problem with many TV channels these days. You can barely find a channel now that doesn't have an annoying on screen logo and apparently leaving a plasma tuned to a channel with one of these for a sustained period can damage the screen.

It might be worth having a look at this website - Digitalspy - LCD TV Reviews and Plasma TV Reviews for guidance on what type to go for. The digitalspy forums are also a good place to get advice from geeks people who are more tuned into these things.

At the end of the day it all depends on how much you want to spend.

My dad owns an electronic store, so I've gone through many many many TVs.  LCD, Plasma, usually always from the 36-72 inch level.

I will NEVER EVER BUY PLASMA AGAIN.  The difference between the 2 is very small, but the LCD was much more reliable.  Less power consumption too, with energy prices on the verge of going wack thats what you need  :D
