but you can get a decent picture of some aspects like attitude, defensive mindedness, ability to pass, cross, dribble, tackle, win headers etc

I think its time that we start playing most of our best 11 , getting  them a little bit of match fitness as the season is not far away , i think stevie has recovered but i'm not sure when torres returns from holiday? Anyone please clarify .
Paecho showed a fair bit of good touches , the lad is taking this opportunity to let rafa notice him , i think we should wrap up our transfers by the end of this month , giving them ample time to settle with the team and get a few games and fitness under their belt . What's our next friendly?

Honestly, players and the overall state of the side can't be judged in pre-season. Watch any pre-season game and they are usually just drawn-out affairs that almost put you to sleep. No real system in place, and players are fragmented all over the show. It was the same  last year, then once the CL qualifier came, it was back to business. The CL qualifier will be the first time we get to see the new signings, really.

Continued match discussion here: Villarreal vs Liverpool F.C - Tonight on SS1 from half 8.

Some of the big guns are back, maybe a chance to see one or two in action over in Spain.

I think we might see a closer to first team side playing today , villareal are no pushovers they finished 2nd last season and challenged for the title , expect it to be a tight game maybe us nicking it with the odd goal , if we play almost our first team .

Cavileri

Degen      Agger      Skrtel        Dossena

                    Lucas
Ngog                                     Babel
                    Gerrard

                    Keane  Torres

2-1 , torres and keane :D

Report in the Echo says Nemeth is going to play .

Krisztian Nemeth set to make Liverpool FC debut at Villarreal
Jul 30 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

HUNGARIAN hotshot Krisztian Nemeth is in line to make his eagerly awaited Liverpool debut in tonight's friendly against Villarreal.

Rafa Benitez called the 19-year-old striker into the travelling party for the trip to Spain after being impressed by Nemeth's progress in the reserves and his performances at the recent European Under-19 Championships.

With new £20m signing Robbie Keane and recent recruit David Ngog also likely to make their first appearance for the club all eyes will be on Villarreal's El Madrigal stadium as Liverpool take part in a friendly match which was organised as part of the deal which brought Pepe Reina to Anfield three years ago.

Ironically, Reina may not be involved after he left the squad behind to be with his wife for the birth of their second child, although Liverpool will give him every chance of facing his former club.

Nemeth, who joined Liverpool from MTK Hungaria last summer, was the top scorer in the Reds’ title winning reserve side last season and Benitez is tipping him to have a bright future in the game.

He said: "Krisztian is a player who has a lot of potential and I feel the time is right to include him in the first team squad for the game against Villarreal.

"He played very well for the reserves last season and scored quite a lot of goals. It is clear that he has the ability to score but he also has good game intelligence.

"We have high hopes for him but he must continue to work hard every day because that is the only way to improve.

"The good thing is Krisztian likes to learn and work with the coaching staff and this will only help him."

Krisztian already has a full international cap to his name despite not yet having played a first team game for his club and is rated the most promising prospect to come out of Hungary in several years.

He will join fellow youngsters Damien Plessis, Emiliano Insua, Stephen Darby, Jay Spearing and Dani Pacheco in the squad for tonight's game in keeping with Benitez's theme of giving youth a chance during pre-season.

The boss believes the progress shown by the reserves bodes well for the club's future and could help save Liverpool a fortune.

"The young players are doing a very good job and the work that they have been doing is already bearing fruit," he said.

"We have good quality in the reserve team and we can see these players being in the first team in the future.

"We have done this without spending big money on them, the cost to the club has been minimum.

"It was important that we signed these players when we did because we needed to improve and it is clear that this has already happened because last season the reserve team won the league and the average age of the team was just 18.

"These players clearly have great potential and it would be very hard to find better young players than them without spending big money.

"Hopefully they will go on to fulfil their potential because this would save the club a lot of money.

“Every year the quality of the squad is improving and these players are an important part of that improvement."

Meanwhile, Liverpool have received a number of inquiries for Yossi Benayoun but no offers have been submitted for the Israeli.
