i don think the keane-berbatov pairing was working for them .
and 40-45m for an ageing forward pair will go a long way in improving other areas of the team .. and buy a striker !!
they already got dos santos ..the guy's talented and they will add one more i guess . its a rare case when the trabsfer will be suitable for all involved ! :)

Perhaps you're right Lee J, I just think he's more in the 15 million bracket when compared to other players and their prices. But as you say he's proven in the PL, which of course is a huge plus. Anyway, if we get him and he starts banging them in like Torres, I won't give a damn how much we've paid for him :;):

18-20 mil is alot of money but just on the flip side for that amount of money we do know what we are getting and that he can already produce in the PL. I would have loved to have got Silva or Villia, but just because we would have paid in the reigion of 20mil for these 2 does not mean we get instant quality in the PL. With Torres i think we fell on our feet for once. And unearthed someone born to play in this league.

Keane can already produce match winning moments and if he does that against manc, arsenal or chelski he may just be worth the extra cash.

Hey lads, Spurs paid 7 million for him, they´ll be over the moon and running him to Euston to get the first train up to Lime Street if they do get 20 million. Since when did a club make 13 million on a player??

not only that, Keane can make himself a shooting chance out of nothing. I was watching some youtube footage of him and it is true he scored some beautys but he also hit the post a lot and had a lot parried by the keeper - If he scores - great if he hits the post or has it saved whos gonna be there to mop up the rebounds - torres. It's a win win for us.

Just a little concerned that this is not still paper talk to the point of the deal almost being done as this story is still very quiet on all the sports channels.

Not saying that they are always in the know but!!!!

LiverpoolFC are very quiet about it as well

If he plays Keane and Torres up front I will be very happy.

Always hoped Keane would arrive at Liverpool and hopefully it will go through. Terrific player who gives everything week in week out and for my money I dont think we could bring in a much better forward than him. The lad can hold the ball, run the channels, set up and score goals and is a clever, bright 100% footballer.

I fear the rotation and one up fromt system may spoil the party a bit but will be made up if a deal can be done to bring Keane to Anfield.

:nod , good post .

I think if rafa signs keane that we might be seeing 2 strikers upfront , keane can't play in the kuyt role , he's a natural striker and has been scoring consistently for spurs while playing as a striker . Don't fix anything that's not broken , if we sign him , leave him as a striker . We'll know if rafa has seen that rotation does no good during the first 10 games or so , if he keeps a consistent line up . I personally think he'll cut rotation down to the bare minimum as we more or less played a strong side and the same side after the loss to barnsley in the fa cup last season .

I Hope so

I know it's not really worth worring about but wonder what the spurs faithful are thinking about these 2 possibly being sold.

they surely must be up in arms.

spurs had the second worst goal difference in the premier league last season. only Derby conceded more. So take away Keane & Berbatov goals from that and they would probably have been relegated.

hmmm, fans must be worried

I do believe Ramos will have something up his sleeve though. Surely they wouldn't just sell their two main strikers and thus having to rely on the ever dangerous Bent  :D . They seem to be buying a lot of young talent, so I would expect them to replace Berbatov and Keane with some interesting younger strikers (haven't got a clue who though).

Regarding us buying Keane he could very well turn out to be a very good buy. I only hope the 20 million being quoted are not true, as that would be quite a bit too much imo.

Agreed, on Ramos--he's got a gameplan.  I thought his comments yesterday were very telling.  Reading between the lines, it appears as though he's quite prepared to let both Keane and Berbatov go.  Check out the last paragraph of this article from the Telegraph.  It seems as though Spurs are operating on a philosophy similar to Arsenal's: buy young and cheap and entertain all tempting offers for veteran players.  We may end up paying top dollar for Keane but, by all accounts, Ramos will not pull an O'Neill and do his utmost to scupper this deal.

Juande Ramos gives no assurances on futures of either Robbie Keane or Dimitar Berbatov

By Sandy Macaskill
Last Updated: 1:10pm BST 17/07/2008

Tottenham manager Juande Ramos has addressed for the first time the offers for his two first-team strikers, Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov, and has given no assurances that the pair, either in part or in whole, will be at White Hart Lane next season.

Spurs are currently in loose negotiations with Manchester United over Berbatov, holding out for an offer that gives more than a cursary nod to the club's £30 million valuation. Recent developments suggest, however, that Barcelona are now considering hijacking Untied's move by meeting Spurs’ asking price.

It is exactly what Spurs have been waiting for: more money and the chance to send the Bulgarian far from where he can do damage in the Premier League. If true, Tottenham will jump at the offer.

Keane, meanwhile, has attracted the attention of Liverpool, who are preparing an improved package after Spurs rejected their initial offering out of hand. With Peter Crouch’s sale to Portsmouth, Rafael Benitez has placed the acquisition of a striker high on his list of priorities.

Ramos, who is in Spain on the club's training camp, remains unruffled at the prospect of losing his eminent strike partnership.

“We’re going to see how this ends, but we’re speaking about two very important footballers,” he said. “For the moment they are with us but, whatever happens, our plan is to have a good squad with a potential that helps us to do better than last year.”

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been busy working on the transfer market, with numerous names bandied about. Diego Capel is one of the most recent and most promising. He is a winger, however. Luis Garcia, the Espanyol striker, is expected to alleviate the pressure and sign soon.

The club’s policy on the transfer market has been characterised by an investment in youth this summer, with Luka Modric, Giovani dos Santos and John Bostock all brought in so far.

Now is the time for some experience, but Ramos insists that a sudden need to find replacement strikers - if Keane and Berbatov do decide to leave - will not affect his strategy of meticulous examination of prospective signings.

He explained: “At Tottenham, we have had a clear philosophy regarding buying and selling for years. You need to understand that this club is in the transfer market, a company that needs to debrief at the end of the financial year.

“The idea is signing young players, promising and talented ones, and if important offers for older players are made, studying it to see what is the best for the club.”

IMO a very good signing.

Keane will bring an extra bit of intelligence, guile and goals to the front line.

£20m is the going rate. I said before that there might be players in europe who we can get cheaper but how long does it take them to settle into the EPL. Keane will hit the ground running. Queue argument about Torres but I am sorry but Torres is a one off!!

Get this deal tied up and that's the attacking and defensive options sorted. Now all we need is to sort out the Xabi and Barry situation. My thoughts are -

Xabi to stay
Barry to join
Lucas/Plessis to go out on loan to other EPL or Championship teams
