I know he a stranger to the team but yesterday Degen looked like he was a stranger to football, had an absolute shocker, don't think I've ever seen such a poor debut from a supposedly seasoned pro.. Insua performance was straight out of the "Riise on a bad day book of defending", in fact next to Insua , Riise now seems like a Paulo Maldini. Unless they were both just having a bad day at the office, god help us when we have to field Degen and Insua against decent opposition.

Leto again looked promising, hope he gets more run outs this season than he did last. Pacheko an obvious talent and will definitely get better with  maturity, tended to try the clever ball when the simple one would do, but did supply a ball of great vision for Lucas to score.

How can Gerrard be tired when he has been on his hols and wasnt in the euros? YET Kuyt was in the euros only joined the squad yesterday and played the last 10 minutes.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Once again i thought Pacheco was very impressive again for one so young. The lad is only 17 and everyone would be w@nking over him if he played for Arsenal, having a go at Rafa for never bringing this kind of youngster through.

Only saw bits of the game, but I agree that Degen has an air of headless chicken about him. Insua looked rusty to say the least.

Pacheco is definitely one to look out for, if he can develop physically I think we could be on to one. He looks sound technically and his movement looks encouraging. It's still early days though and the oppo were categorically sh!t.

Exactly what I said, more or less, on a general forum. The opposition were poor, his finishing wasn't much better and he will have to up that performance when the opposition are better. We had the look of Arsenal at time, trying to thread the ball through or dribble through the defence. Did anyone see or count any crosses from the FBs? Supposedly that is our width, according to reports of Rafa's views

I thought a few of our players seemed to have lost a fair bit of weight since last season. Hyypia , Carra, Kuyt and Skrtel all seem to have come back much thinner than they finished last season.

Maybe Rafa's only playing the slimmers, perhaps Gerrard is too fat to play

Yeh, my gut instinct is we're fecked if we think Degen's our answer to the right. Pace, power, average technique, but not much else. Defensively clueless.

That's just my instinct having only seen bits of him. It's early days but something doesn't seem right. Even when I saw his face in the press conference he looked a bit thick, one of them you think 'oh sh!t, he hasn't a clue'.

I've hammered the lad and he hasn't even played a competitive game yet  :D

Does feel a bit mean judging on playing rubbish opposition and looking like he'd look more at home wearing their shirt. More signings like Degen and we could well be toning down our expectations, playing kids first game of the season and playing not to win the Premiership as a certain other thread is leaning towards

it always worries me when fullbacks are better going forward than they are defensively. it's the same as when people were suggesting we go for philip lahm when the truth is whenever he plays against anyone decent he gets the runaround.
