They have had "positive discrimination" in the USA for some time. In Hollywood if they portray a black person in a positive light in a film they get benefits for it. Thats why the judge, police captain and mayor is nearly always black in films.
Positive descrimination also means that they give jobs to the best black candidate not the best qualified applicant. Over here large companies have to have a percentage of handicapped people.

Thats true. I dont mind fairness, and indeed the less fortunate than me being given a chance to prove the worth. What I hate more than most is the fact that those who want to work cant, not because they are unable, not because they just cannot do the job but simply down to the fact, there are others in the pecking order ahead. My missus got a job last year to cover for me. 1 interview, 1 job. I went for about 20, 16 letters of dont call us we'll call you and 4 interviews. Its disheartening listening to so many people saying "the brits are lazy", "they dont want the jobs". We do, we are not given the chance to get them.

and for those doubting the merits of living in the back of an old truck; mine was a 8 ton 1663 bedford rl, ex military, 4 wheel drive with wheels nearly as big as i am. i'll bet some of the older ex squaddies on here will have spent many a happy hour in the back of one. i made mine a little more comfy. i took the back off it and built my own wooden house, complete with separate kitchen with gas cooker, it had a wood burning stove, fitted bed and plenty of storage. during the winter it was the warmest and most comfortable place i've ever known. and in the summer i just had to drop down the tailgate and i had my own deck before any of these interior design ponces even thought of it.
one of the biggest disappointments about old blighty is that its nigh on impossible to do that kind of thing anymore.

Well when I started this thread it wasnt aimed towards immigrants, asylum seekers etc. As usual in these kind of threads, they go off on their own tangents. Then other posters come wading in to presume that its usually always johnny foreigner whos at fault and that they feel the need to defend them.
That wasnt or never is the case, it is more to do with the finger pointing at the MP's that run the nation and to question there roles.
Going back to the subject Woof pointed out about the British goverment not knowing the numbers of migrants that enter the UK each year. I heard that the British government have tried to fix this solution to a certain extent. They've looked at the nation that is 'apparently 5 years behind them in every thing they do' for a solution. Australia I'm talking about, the British government are bringing in a points system to see if certain indivduals qualify as temporary or permanent visas. About time they did something I say, although its still probably to little to late. These are the things that grate me, we're supposed to be the motherland of nations like Australia and Canada ? and lead by example, yet its the countries that belong to the commonwealth that are showing us how it should be done. We've almost gone backwards while these younger nations have got there policies and houses in order. Its and embarrisment to read what you have to go through to become a permanent visa holder in countries like Australia and Canada. Believe me when I say that being British doesnt give you any kind of advantage when applying for residency, just becaus Australia are under the commonwealth some folk will think its easier to get through the gates at the airport, it isnt. The only advantage the British have I suppose is that they speak English or have relations living out here.

There are people living in that town who have never ever worked or havent worked for 15-20 years because the have a bad back, WTF ? Can you not find a job that doesnt put massive strain on your back, of course you can but its easier to claim disability benefits because you probably get more from NOT working than you do earning $4.28 an hour in a factory.
Fraudulant doleits and prisonsers alike around Britain are a huge strain on the Governments economy, and its the tax payer that gets hit by it. I recently saw a picture of a brand new prison opened up somewhere in the UK that made the hilton hotel look modest. Feck me it had all the luxuries you could ever want, a Schmick glass frame building that had all the mod cons for inmates breaking the law. Then underneath the picture and image read something like this ' Why work and law abide when you can get this'.
John Craig has mentioned that the NHS isnt as bad as what the media lead you to believe, and that we're better off with our sysytem than the Americans private way, of which I know all to well what thats like. I had a friend visiting the States a few years back and was hit by a car and in real serious trouble laying along the side of the road. He didnt have any kind of travel insurance, and when the Ambulance pulled up, before helping him out they wanted y\to know about his insurance policies and if he had the finances to pay for their time. Luckily he had the money a few grand, but he said they'd off left him by the side of the road if he had no means of paying the immediate bill.
So yes in some circumstances and because of different systems we may be better off than other people who are less unfortunate. But does that take our right away to question or become dissilusioned by the way hospitals are being run over here, as John would have you believe there far from clean and satisfactory. The labour government shut a lot of local hospitals down in some towns in the Uk. And where I come from we initaially had two hospitals, one of which was knocked down about fifteen to twenty years ago. Fair enough that still leaves a town populated by 147,000 people one hosp[ital. In Labours stint o\in office the government have decided to cut costs and knock down the one remaining hospital and send the local people down the road to Watford general. Which is a good twenty minutes away traffic depending. And its just round the corner from Vicarige road, Watfords own hospital struggles with coping with its own residents which is more heavily populated than 147.000 people. Then add all the people of the neaby town to that, throw in matchday at Watford and you've got yourself chaos in trying t reach the hospital.
My sister was pregnant and her water broke, her fella thinking she was going to make in time to Watford general phoned our local hospital (before it was fully de-commisioned) in attempt to get her there on time.
When he got through to the Nurse on the other end her ords to him were ..... ' I hope your a fast

Incidently she never made Watford hospital on time and gave birth in the back of the car half way there, luckily for her there were no complications, but still as a law abiding tax payer of a 21st century western economic powerhouse the Government and therefore the NHS couldnt for fill its duty efficently enough to help her out.

But I bet there are people in Britain who have horror stories much much worse than this. Waiting lists where people are waiting for life saving treatemnt and are being put on hold because hospitals are underr staffed, nurses are under paid and just the sheer fact there is so much conjestion inside the NHS. Well let me tell the people who think the NHS isnt that bad, soem people on these waiting lists have poured there life savings into going private in fear of the waiting lists never getting to them in time. When you come to a country like Austraila an see for yourself how there hospitals and there health service runs, it really opens your eyes and you think to yourself, 'only if we did it like this', but we're not allowed to becuse we're better off than other people ?
Maybe its easier for people t bury there head in the sand and say 'how dare you complain, about your government and systems, people around the world a much worse off than you' True and Britain has done probably more than its fair share to aid countries around the world, wipe debts off African nations, get drinking water to people who need it. We've being doing live aid ever since I can remember and the generous people of Britain raise millions for these poor buggers over one weekend. But twenty years later the likes of Ethiopia and countries like that are still in strife after seemingly billions have been pumped into them. Unfortuantely it seems alot of this money has gone to corrupt governments down the tyears and the aid and supply hasnt always got to the people in need. You can only do so much, and tbh they and there governments have to help themselves too.
Everyday new scandals rise about dodgey MP's. Who expect the people of Britain not to dodge the benefit systems and what not, who like me bemoan the fact there are spongers out there who dont earn there keep. But then we find our own MP's doing the same thing, how can they expect people to do the right things when they're at it themselves.
It seems to me that unless a real travesty happens in the UK, whether it be race riots, the black death or an earthquake something so extreme or ridiculous like that ,people will always say there are people worse
off than you, so you shouldnt complain.
Well I make no apologes as a white male from a western economy voicing my concern over issues in my country, and just because I dont live there anymore it doesnt mean to say I dont get affected by it or shouldnt do. I have family and friends back there and it doe effect me.

Yes, the population wasnt as well loooked after and the life expectancy was lower as a result. Nanny might remember the fever hospital which you wouldnt have today, but used to be full of kids in the old days.
So, we´re in better health as a result of the NHS but at the same time people abuse it by going for every little ailment they can think of.
You have to find a balance.
I read something last year this is for Oz Hospitals not sure how much truth is in it. However the biggest drain on Hospital resources are from those patients with smoking related illness.
So for you in the UK...........keep your hospitials running well by shooting Dawson

bamaga - i know some of your points are aimed at me by the 'white male' references. to be honest i agree with may of your points but i need to make one thing clear - i thought i already had, actually. i've never told anyone to stop complaining, in fact i think the british public have every right to complain and its a tragedy that people don't get out onto the streets as much as they used to. the majority are just rolling over and taking what the government serves up while others resort to daily mail style rants and completely lose their perspective. whenever a society feels threatened it will turn on its most obvious target of hatred and turn all the blame and anger on that. i just wish that sometimes people would have a wider perspective and also not lose sight of some of the advantages that they do have.

The country is just in a bad way. People sue over absoltuely everything, people are off sick for absolutely everything. chavvy fat women with 6 kids and tracksuits are sucking the country dry. there is a fear over muslim extremists when most muslims are top people. there is racial tension like ive never seen before. Fear over gun and knife crime. Immigration concerns when as an island we cannot cope geographically speaking. the oil problems when there are just too many cars.
The thing is that as a country we need to be more selfish. We send millions to Africa when we have thousands without homes on our doorstep. Im all for helping out if i can, but if someone across the road is hungry, but someone in my house is just as hungry, the person across the street is gonna have to wait.
I have a very selfish attitude, but we arent the great nation we once were, and we arent the richest. Let Russia help out some people, they got some rich epople right? We need to sort out our own problems before wetry to fix those thousands of miles away.

There are obvious things that need addressed as you mention,first and foremost i think the government need to re install national pride.A lot less seem to be proud to be British than they used to be,once the pride goes people care a lot less.
In the states for example loads of people fly the star and stripes outside their house,their flag is present in classrooms in schools!
But in England if you put this
outside your house you are told to take it down incase it offends non British nationals!Totally sick when you think around 70 years ago thousands of our people died fighting for that flag....they died in vain when people are threatened with court if they dont take it down.

What you said there is so true i said before i am married to a jonny foreigner and he canot believe how much this counrty bows down to all these do gooders. When England were playing in the last football tournament he had a big St gearge flag out of his office he got a letter from Hackney Council asking him to take it in as it might offend. Absolute joke
