Get bent

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Why is there even a topic of Darren Bent on this forum? Wouldn't have him anywhere near us, even the thought of signing him is daft. And people slag off Kuyt....give me a f*cking break.

Ironic !

Crouch was ?

2005/6 and 2006/7, yes. Plus we didn't pay £16.5m for Crouch, the point I'm making is Bent is being judged on his return and fee without consideration being given to his minutes on the pitch or return. It would be like us signing Crouch last season for £16.5m, giving him the chances Bent (or Crouch) got and saying "yeah, Crouch was a complete waste of money"

Nicely taken completely out of context quote, 5/5 for twisting it to make your point. How many games has each had for his respective clubs?

Nah, you're right. Besides missing the point I never ONCE suggested we should sign Bent, joke passed y'sen and others by completely there, you'd rather we just discuss Crouch, Torres, Kuyt, the takeover and Barny ad nauseam until the start of the season?!?!?!?!

NEW FORUM RULE :idea

We shouldn't discuss anything in any way whatsoever without prior approval from Emerald Red.

Spudz Premiership 2007/8

Source : FPL

Keane : 15 goals in 2714 mins (181 mins/goal)
Bent : 6 goals in 1148 mins (191 mins/goal)
Berbatov : 15 goals in 2989 mins (199 mins/goal)

Bent : 5 assists in 1148 mins (230 mins/assist)
Keane : 7 assists in 2714 mins (388 mins/assist)
Berbatov : 11 assists in 2989 mins (271 mins/assist)

In terms of minutes per goal or assist ie both combined, Bent was most productive with one or the other every 104 mins compared to Berbatov 115 and Keane 136. We wouldn't turn down Berbatov and possibly not Keane either...........

Not that I'm saying we should get Bent, just pointing out people are quick to judge the player based on the stupidity of his owners. And yet some think we shouldn't accept £9m for Crouch who sat on the bench a lot last season and scored less goals

You may have a point there, but i still feel if we are to sign him he will be yet another crouch without given the chance to shine.. BTW anyone have stats for crouchie similar to bent? then maybe we can compare head to head..

crouch has a better scoring ratio than bent. And had over 3 hours less time on the pitch than Bent (who someone said wasn't given a fair crack at the whip)

Source FPL:

Bent: 6 goals in 1148 mins (191 mins/goal)

Crouch: 5 goals in 929 mins (186 mins/goal)

Sorry disagree,

I would bet a substatial amount of monies, that most of his goals and assists came when coming on as a sub:

Thus meaning teams were already worn down by the strikers previously on the pitch. and therefore more subspetable to his pace (his only real quality)

Also.... i think he probably played in games against shi.ttier teams.

He is no better than crouch & voronin,

tbh he's fec.kin sheite

I can't believe the reaction in someone suggesting that we sign Bent. Most people on this forum were banging the drum this time last year for Rafa to sign him. Spurs signed him last year when they didn't really need another star striker, the result was a loss of form and confidence in Bent. We, on the other hand are struggling for strikers. We have Torres, but in his absence we have no-one to fill the void. Crouchie's not pacy enough to play on his own up front (which is why IMO he will be sold), and Kuyt and Voronin play better when in a supporting role. I don't believe it's totally out of the question to sign Bent, he would add something to the team. It's certainly a topic not to be sneered at like most people are doing.
I can't believe the fickleness of people on this forum, especially the more knowledgeable posters. Bent is the villain after one bad season, yet Arshavin and Villa are the heroes after a couple of decent Euro '08 games. I didn't see many people (or any in Arshavin's case) banging on the door for their signings. Villa was even being touted for 15M prior to the tournament.

For the record, not the first time, I wasn't seriously suggesting we sign Bent. "get bent" is an expression which given his name is just begging to be used. But I do agree that this forum does rather slate people for expressing OPINIONS. And the change of opinions get covered up in the sands of time, those suggesting Houllier should go before the majority then whistled a different tune, few warming to the signing of Crouch who now won't let a bad word be said against him. I might dig up the "we're signing Kuyt" thread and see what that reveals

I'm sure some have heard/seen rumours linking him to the bitters. Some of us must have given him a thought and even posted those thoughts about signing him.

Where in that do I say "I think we should sign Bent?" I say the bitters have been linked with him and "some of us must have given him a thought". So people are, as usual, adding their own interpretation to my words - and incorrectly so. My personal belief on Bent hasn't changed, I don't think he'd be the worst signing in the world as he has shown he can score goals in the Premiership, but I wouldn't pay too much for him - certainly not what spudz did. If Crouch cost £7m three seasons ago then something around £7m-£10m would be reasonable, however I'd rather we spent £20m+ on signing Villa or a top quality Torres-esque striker. But if we ain't gonna spend that kind of money on a striker then Bent would be on a list of possibles, depending on price. I will repeat though that I'm not suggesting Bent should be a primary target

opinions for the most part can change with the evidence presented. i was one of the ones totally against the signing of crouch but a couple of good seasons have proved him to be a lot better than the player i expected. i also thought kuyt might be the answer to our striking options and while disappointed on that front have seen him become a valuable team player of a different sort. i was never a big fan of bent and his last season has seen him drop even further in my estimations.

its the people that stick blindly to their opinions and hurl insults at anyone despite what the evidence suggests that are more of a problem to healthy discussion in my opinion. obviously tough, that opinion is subject to change.

Bent does at least have it in his locker that he can play on his own up top in a 4-5-1 as Neil pointed out. Also, as he's already done it for a season he wouldn't be new to the role of playing from the bench barring injury. When we were in for him, a section of the forum thoguht it was a ridiculous notion and I must confess at the time I was a bit of a sticker upper for him. I've seen him play live on a number of occasions and I think he's a good player. Not worth 16 million yet by any means, nor another Torres in any way shape or form but a good player nontheless. If the team was playing well and Torres picked up an injury for a few weeks, you could bring Bent in without changing the system and he wouldn't let anyone down. He's much better in the air than he looks, quick, strong and brave and despite his slightly nonplussed facial expression half the time, an intelligent runner as well.

I do rate Arshavin very much and totally hold my hands up to the bandwagon jumper thing as I only saw him play for the first time about two weeks ago. He for me is more of an option if you are going to play 4-4-2. If though you want a striker who can fill the gaps, sit on the bench, come in when needed and score goals, then you could do a lot worse than consider Bent if we are going to move Crouch on. At around 10 million or so, I'd have no complaints if we signed him. I say once again, I think he is a very good player.
