this one is mainly aimed at sabes, but anyone else feel free to chip in :)

i have finally got myself broadband in this new flat but had to go cable to get it. the plus side is that i now have 36 channels of sh!te on the telly but the down side is that they don't supply a wireless router. we have 3 mac laptops and want them all on line at the same time. the woman in the office told me that i can only use a certain cable compatible router that costs nearly 100 euros, but the techy who came to install the modem said i can use any old router.

now, i have an old jazztel wifi router from the previous botched attempt to get online. how do i set it up to use with my cable modem and get wifi signal throughout the flat? i need to somehow override all its default settings right?

my other option is to go an get a good old apple airport express. its also going to cost me nearly 100 euros but its a piece of p!ss to set up and can give me access to the printer from any laptop and can receive music beamed from anywhere in the flat.

I need:

Model of your old Jazztel router.

Model of your cable modem.

I take it you're using Jazztell too as ISP?

Ok, I'm off work now. I'll have a little walk now, and when I arrive home I'll help you if someone doesn't help first. :)

Depending on your router, you'll need an special cable or not.

Basically the basic system you need to configure is this.

Image

The Surfboard modem is your Motorola modem. It goes to the internet with a coaxial cable.

The Hub/Switch will be your Jazztel Router. Every Router is a Hub by default, and yours can do it.

By Ethernet cable you must understand

this cable.

The tricky part is having a crossover cable, they look like a ethernet cable, but has the cables aligned differently. You can make one easily, but you might want to buy one in a electronic shops (might be trickier in Gijon), it's very cheap.

Depending on your hub (I'll check later) you might not need it.

I'll come back later, if you get the picture and you have a crossover cable, try it, if you already have internet with the motorola chances are it will work directly.

If you try and doesn't work, we'll bother to look at the configuration.

If you don't get something, ask.

If you have any problems setting up your network TRY NETWORK MAGIC its free and you also get 10 days or so with the full program, which enables you to see clearly where any problems are. Sort out your problems then just use the free version or uninstall it completely.

I had a problem with a printer not wanting to "join" my network, fixed it in a couple of mins with Net magic.

I forgot to mention the bit you need is the upper one. The several computers you see below can be linked to the hub via ethernet cables, or wireless, as your case. But the bit from your router to the motorola device is the one that you should care about.

Nice program that S@int, I think it's a proper way to do some tasks if you don't want to fiddle much or doing it manually.

My hunch is that should Andy uses a normal rj45 (ethernet) cable to link the Wireless router to the Motorola cable modem, the program would say the local network is detected, but the internet is unreachable. If you use the mentioned crossover cable though, it will work.

Once you have it working, you might want to look with S@int's program whether the neighbours can join and use your wireless connections, as many companies brought their wireless routers unprotected.

I have been playing on online war game called Cyber Nations for nearly 2 years now. I have built my wee nation up from nothing to something that is looked up to by newbies.
Now my problem is that I have not been able to log into my nation page (or anyones nation page come to that) in 5 days, which is a bit of a bummer as the aim of the game is to build your nation up by paying bills, collecting taxes and buying infrastruture etc Because I have not been able to access my nation none of this will be done and I can only be inactive for 20 days then my nation will be deleted (I am 11 days inactive now) and all that hard work, time and money will be wasted.
There seems to be quite a few people with the same problem and we all have one thing in common, we live in Northern Ireland and we are all on Virgin broadband. I have rang Virgin and they have said it's nothing to do with them as it is an American website, which is a load of toss as the Cyber Nations forums and my alliance forum are both American. I have tried resetting the wireless and running my laptop straight from the modem but still no joy.
Please help as I dont want to loose everything I have done.

Ps I know it prob sounds geeky, but I have made a load of friends from all over the world by playing this game and its been fun  :D

tinpot nations never make it, perhaps youve been overrun and deleted into a far superior nation by one of your so called friends.....wuhahahahaha  :D   :p  :wwww   :D

Lol @ Judge!!! My nation is fine. Was able to get back into it last night after threatening a Virgin that I was going change and bat for the other side

dunno if that would work tho :D

British f'ucking Parking.

Anyone know the rules ?

Got caught on camera 16 minutes and some seconds into a 15 minute restriction on a camera monitored parking bay.

I got back to my motor within the alloted time and the camera shows me inside my vehicle, engine running, wheels turned, waiting for a long stream of traffic to clear so I can exit the bay (was wanting to do a U turn so needed both sides of road to be clear). The Kunts want to charge me £40 (£80 if I don't pay immediately) for being 1min 49 seconds over the alloted time.

Can my situation given the circunstances at that moment still be legally classed as "parking" ?

i think this might be classed as 'waiting'   :D

seriously i would go to court on that one, do they expect you to just pull into traffic so you are not parked anymore causing an accident

Surely not. The old bill would Nick you if you were suspected of D&D, and they can nick when the car is stationary. So in their eyes your at the control of an a motor. So surely the time waiting to pull out of a park is the same thing.

Threaten them (with your story of the hunchback girl rocking on her back) legal action, if they want you to pull out bang on 15 minutes, does that mean pull out if there is a two ton truck coming anyway ? It has to be safe to pull out !

Tell em to get fcuked.
