Some very interesting posts and a good read this thread.
Bamaga man bimick, peewee and anyone else that has the balls to emigrate fair play to you, it must be so hard at first.
Without getting all political and that i would just like to say i dont think i could live in any other place in the world, i wouldnt even want to leave my own town (Birkenhead) and its a sh!thole really  :D
There are loads of reasons, bigmick has touched on one of the main ones about like minded people, i would miss me family and me mates too much.
Even my job isnt great but the people i work with are, same sense of humour, same interests, football, X factor the soaps (i know with the last two i am sounding like a girl, but most of Britain if they are honest watch them)
There are things about the country that do my head in but there is more i love about the place than that i dislike.
I went to work in Zante in 2002 for the summer and it was sound, met loads of people had a laugh, and thought the place was lovely, but i still missed home so much, the world cup was on and i just wanted to be home with me mates getting bevvied. I stuck it out and i am glad for the experience, its made me even more convinced that despite all the sh!te this country has going on i wouldnt be able to actually settle anywhere else.
A couple of 2 week holidays a year will do me.

Talking of Cyprus Nanny just got back from there, it was me mates wedding the end of May, stayed near Ayia Napa (but about 10 minutes walk away from the mad square)
Also went to army barracks in Nicosia as my uncle (who was in the army) has been buried there since 1959, loved the island and cant wait to get back, just for a week or two mind....would miss Birkenhead too much  :D

Sabre you had me in stitches with that post mate

Dawson, Ace and Lee.

Fairplay to you lads for what you believe in, I respect your views and understand them too. And dont get me wrong, England in a lot of parts is very beautiful and scenic, I LOVE country pubs especially in summer time down by the canal where all the beautiful women congregated. There isnt too much wrong with the Geographical side to England, well the weather is c.rap and the beachs are s.*i*e :D .

But I'm on about the society of the country, the way in which the honest earner gets hit with taxes that are bordering on robbery. I mean, paying to throw your rubbish away kin ell. That sort of stuff where the Government screw you over. Road tax, fuel tax. The government make out they want less cars on the road BOLLOX ! You imagine the life of just one car on the road, having it Mot'd, road tax, fuel, day after day year after year its a multi million pound revenue. Ontop of that you have to pay for public parking which is a rip off, traffic wardens who make money for the government the list goes on, congestion charges and I believe the government were thinking about tolls on certain roads ? There is no way they want to cut down cars like they say, otherwise IMO public transport would be much cheaper, more frequent and more reliable than it is.

Dawson you said about people leaving ? My Nan remembers when Southall was a White community, pleasant and clean. Now its little India and spot the White man. Where does everyone go ? F.uck knows but they get fed up with the way their treated and move out of London or emmigrate. It wont be long before Britain becomes an Islamic state, and I aint living in that. The Government dont look after their own people enough so why the f.uck should I stay and be just another statistic paying tax, I'd rather enjoy life as best as I can, and for me it cannot be done in old Blighty anymore.

That post sounded a little racist, but its how I feel and governments of Britain have made me feel like this.  :(

you only have one life mate and you need to do with it what makes you happy, it seems we are both happy where we are.

many people complain about living in the UK but they just don't seem to have the balls to uproot and try life elsewhere.

hand on heart there are days when i miss the UK, sometimes i wake up and see the sun and think i will head down the mersey, or have a drive to the lake district and have a nice pub lunch, here i cant do that (I can however drive to a tropical beach to compensate   :D )

but as for the high tax and all the bollox about what can and cant be said, i dont want that

let's start an ex-pats thread where we all slag of the motherland and go on about how our new countries are paradises! :D

england/britain is a beautiful country with wonderful people and a generally healthy society. the thing that has ballsed it up has been weak (new labour) or plain bonkers (tories) government for the past 2 or even 3 decades with stupid short-sighted schemes that have done more harm than good. taxes are not so high compared to scandinavian countries but the way they are sneakily introduced or put on top of existing taxes is taking the p!ss out of the british consumer. the lack of an educational infrastructure that is capable of teaching respect or instilling some kind of joy in learning is laying the foundations for even more problems in the future. immigration has become a divisive problem only because the government are bending over backwards to help the immigrants at the apparent expense of the liberties, benefits and culture of the natives.

look at the countries we have chosen to live in though - spain for me, asia and australia or canada for others. all of them have pretty fu.cked up politics aswell in one respect or other but its a lot easier to ignore and let it slide as its not OUR country. being in a country which has another language makes it even easier to overlook the social issues and shortcomings by not understanding every nuance of the politics or the journalism. despite being in spain for 5 years and speaking the language reasonably fluently i still don't have as much of a handle on spanish politics and general society as i would like.

still, i can go to the beach and eat nice food, use a public transport network that actually works, hang out in public spaces that are actually nice to be in, drink til 6am, pay only 70p for a good cup of coffee etc etc etc.

i can also listen to deeply rooted racism on a daily basis, waste days going through beaurocratic processes you need a phd to understand or be subjected to probably the worst ever popular music ever recorded :D

choose your poison then. i'm happy here in spain but i don't half miss england with its mist and rain, its pubs, its sense of humour, its greenness, its weird local traditions and its fish and chips. i also realise that my image of england and britain gets more nostalgic and unrealistic every year i'm away.

Thailand doesn't have political problems, I don't know where you get that idea from    :D

either way i get cheap petrol, cheap taxes, cheap food, cheap beer and fantastically hot weather all year round    :D   but one other thing I miss (which you sort of touch on) is short days in winter and long days in summer, I have darkness at 7pm every day here

One of the things I miss is Crimbo in Winter. Now I know all the ex-pats will go on about prawns on the beach and all that stuff and it's lovely. But for me though, when the weathers cold and dreary you can't beat Crimbo being stuck right in the middle of it to cheer everyone up. The Crimbo cards over here are all snow, Robins, forests, Santa and sparkly night skies, meanwhile it's fecking sweltering outside :D Then they all go eat a huge portion of Turkey when all you can manage is a bit of salad and some grilled Chicken. It's going to take some getting used to, if indeed I ever will.

Interesting read this thread...

I guess it comes down to personal choices. For almost the length of our adult lives, we have been overseas for work.... but for us, the annual pilgrimage back home to see family and friends is not something we'd miss, come what may..... In fact we've only ever missed it once and that was because I was stuck in Iran with my head in the bowels of a cranky gas turbine that just refused to co-operate.

I've been based in KL, Singapore, Dubai and Doha and we've made plenty of friends in our time there and have learnt to love the diversity of culture and people there. Before we went, we were told by numerous compatriots to watch out as they're always out to skin you and so we first approached it with trepidation.... but in truth, (and I don't know if we've been lucky or god only knows what) but we've never had any problems in all of these places. We've made life long friends and have an entire chest of wonderful memories to bring home.

And make no mistake about it, we WILL be going home. As wonderful as life has been to us in south east asia and the gulf, at the end of the day, we are who we are and my heart still lies with my family, friends and the land we were born to. For all of it's problems, bizarre political cr@p, social change, crime rates and what nots.... I still call England home (stole that from the Aussies... :D ).... warts and all.

I was born there and god willing, when it's time for me to go, I hope I do it in me favourite pub back home, with a large pint of bitter in the palm of me hand.
