And what's wrong with that?

There isn't really anything wrong with it per se. It's a commercial venture aimed at 'raising the profile' of the sport, yet it doesn't represent what football is about at all. It's false, gimmicky and fanciful IMO. It's an attempt to get a wow from the audiences, who in all likelihood have no appreciation for the sport itelf - barring perhaps a few. The organisers want to make a few quid, under the banner of trying to 'raise the profile' of the game - i.e. they have no real interest in promoting the sport's true values. For those who take a genuine interest in the sport (The Joe Terps of this world), then I do accept that it's at least an opportunity for them to see players they wouldn't normally be able to, even if it's a sh!te attempt at a competition. In summary, I don't like it, but I can accept it to a certain extent.

Well then in that case you're right haha. I read a article from a big sports magazine here. The final article of the mag was about 'How to expand Soccer to America'. Went on about showing more statistics, because that is actually what Americans love in sports. I was a bit disgusted, because there is no word for the game other than 'beautiful', and numbers would just make it technical and turn it into a sport rather than a game.

What's right with it? When are people going to learn the yanks aren't suddenly going to be interested in 'soccer' en masse? The missionary Beckham is deluded if he thinks yanks will flood to games to watch him, just face it USA is not going to be a big 'soccer' playing country just as India, Sri Lanka, Australia and Pakistan aren't. They got the World Cup in 1994 and their football league is still a joke, if the World Cup can't inspire the yanks then what chance a poxy gimmick will?

Why do people persist with all these gimmicks? Because they want millions of yanks pumping money into the sport.

Why will it fail? Because the yanks have NFL, NHL and glorified rounders. In the same way it wouldn't work in India because they're nutty about cricket. You will probably get a few increases in popularity, but it's competing with well established if less global sports.

So I say why bother? Obviously the intention is to put out promotional events for the one-off $$$$$ payouts. If it weren't financially viable ie ran at a loss, then they wouldn't bother. And of course it is something different for TV who will doubtless have some kind of audience for this non-event.

Being 8,000 Kilometers away from Liverpool, I thought it'd take another lifetime till I saw Torres in person. I'm gonna be damn proud wearing my Torres shirt when I go to this.

I've never heard of this until today. Thanks to you, I won't miss it!

De Pedro, Onesimo and other former players did use to pick a football ball, and make basketball points, even 3 pointers.

Sending some players with the required accuracy to do that such as Ronaldinho should be deployed in some NBA game half time. That will show them what's skill.  :D
