4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 - Formation for next season

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Before the transfer season starts in earnest, I was wondering what formation you see as the best one to play in most games (obviously Rafa will vary it for certain games)

Certainly I believe before we start buying players it would be as well to ascertain what formation we will be using to accommodate the players.

I prefer 4-4-2 or perhaps 4-4-1-1 depending on how you see it, with a creative second striker behind a prolific front man. With one attacking winger and one wide midfielder, and two c midfielders making up the quartet.

e.g.:-
Mancini    Gerrard       Masch        Barry

                     Aguero
                          Torres

This season we have had a great deal of success playing 4-2-3-1, but I think that against the better sides Torres has found himself isolated and has taken too much stick. Gerrard finds himself pushed deep to support the midfield and we begin to lose our shape. It is certainly a formation that we should use on occasion but perhaps not as our regular shape.

If we go with 4-2-3-1 from the start (as I think we well might) We are certainly going to need greater support from our midfield 2 than we saw this season, especially against the better sides, with maybe better/more attacking wing play as well.

eg:-

               Masch
                      Barry

Mancini            Gerrard                Babel/Silva

                         Torres

I honestly believe 3-5-2 etc are more for Championship manager than real life, with the obvious advantage being... you can fit all your favourite players in  :D  But thats just me.

4231 all the way, it brings the best out of Gerrard and Torres.

Bl00dy typical. Just when someone works out a formation which would almost certainly see us winning the League next season, some killjoy comes along and spoils it  :D

Nope, I hear Rafa is going for a 4-1-1-1-1-1-1 formation in a kind of snake pattern

Agreed.

There's a slight conundrum with the potential signings.

If we get a top striker in again, then 4-4-2 looks the formation to go with.

I'd rather get a top player to play Kuyt/Babel's position
and stick to the 4-2-3-1.

If we are going to play 4-2-3-1 on a regular basis then we only need three strikers at the club. I personally would sell Voronin and Crouch in the summer but we dont need to replace them with another striker. Instead we would be more in need of a specialist attacking midfielder. As far as strikers go you have Torres plus if he is injured needing a rest then you can play Babel there and still keep the pace in the team.
I would keep Kuyt at the club as he can play as striker but also on the right hand side so gives Rafa options and from next season we may be seeing more of Nemeth in the first team.

I don't care what anyone says. Gerrards best position is out on the right. He is perfect for it, pace, power and superb crossing ability. Rafa knows where Gerrards best position is. The only trouble is Gerrard doesnt.

Christ here we go again with the Gerrard on the right shenanigans. The only reason some think right mid is his best position is surely because for years we haven't had someone to perform the role as well as him, that doesn't mean it's his best position. Gerrard tends to wander towards the action and asking him to nail himself to a wide position imo does not make the best use of his all round ability, not that he stays nailed to the right flank anyway, which in turn makes life less than comfortable for whoevers playing RB.

I think Gerrards best position is a free role stemming from central midfield in a flexible 451/433 formation, he can get forward,  sit and boss the midfield or drift left and right without the rest of the team losing shape or discipline.

Finnan had his best season at RB (in my opinion) with Gerrard playing in front of him mate.

I'd be happy to see us play with the 4-2-3-1 next season but of course I would not expect to see it in every game. Only problem is that we don't have the quality in wide areas (Full-back and Winger) to really make it work. I've seen enough from Babel to believe he make the left hand spot his own but that still means a serious upgrade is needed on the other three spots. Arbeloa and Aurelio are honest footballers who can get the job done against the lesser teams but they are both limited as attacking players, particularly when you compare them to the likes of Evra, Clichy, Sagna, cole and Bridge. Must admit i'm not exaclty thrilled with the signing of Degen or this Italian lad (Dossena) that we are apparently trying to bring in. I'd be delighted with someone like Arshavin to come in and play in either of the three positions behind Torres and a FB with proven quality like Lahm. Unfortunatelty it looks like last year's big money purchase of Torres was a one-off and unitill the ownership saga is put to rest we will have to make do with Bosmans like Degen and Voronin while Chelsea can go and spend £16million (we've only ever spent more money on Torres) on a Full-back just days after the season has eneded.

As for Gerrard's position, I expect he may play a bit on the right as well as behind Torres. It's fairly academic really, if Rafa decided to stick him back on the right he would have to find someone to play in the spot behind Torres (Arshavin anyone?) anyway.
