A tribute to michael owen - A great player.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby LFC #1 » Fri Aug 13, 2004 1:23 am

Well lads, this is my 1000th post, and I thought with the current Owen thing going on, and with it looking more and more likely he is leaving, I would do a tribute To Owen and his career at Anfield to date.

Michael James Owen was brought up in the Liverpool youth academy, and then in 1996/97 he made his first team debut against Wimbledon, scoring a goal on debut, amking Owen the youngest ever goal-scorer for Liverpool at 17 years 143 days.

The 97/98 season is where Owen really came of age scoring 18 goals to be top goalscorer in the premiership along with Chris Sutton and Dion Dublin. Owen then went on to the world cup in France, scoring that wonder goal agianst Argentina, and establishing his name on the international scene.

The 98/99 and 99/00 season were frustraing with constant injuries limiting his playing time severely. Howvever, he still managed to score 19 an 11 goals respectively in the league.

The 2000/2001 season was one of Liverpool's and Owen's greatest, in which Owen was involved in the team which won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, European Super Cup, Worthington Cup and Charity shield. the FA cup final was particularly special for Owen, where he ripoped the hearts out of Arsenal scoring 2 goals in the space of 6 mins to steal the cup from Arsenal in the last 10 minutes, after Ljungberg had put A.rsenal ahead in the 73rd minute.

The 2001/2002 season was another good one for Liverpool, and Owen personally. Liverpool finsihed runners up to Arsenal in the premiership to Arsenal with Owen scoring 19 goals, and made the quarter finals of the Champions league, only to be knocked out by a late goal from Leverkusen. Owen was instrumntal in LFC's CL run scoring 5 goals.

The last 2 seasons have seen a dip in form from both Owen and Liverpool. Owen has had to deal with injuries , some leaving him out for months, and goal scoring droughts. Depsite this Owen still managed to score 19 goals in the 02/03 premiership and 16 in seaon just gone.

Now with Real Madrid apparently wanting Owen, Owen has stalled on his contract negotiations with Liverpool, which has lead to criticism from a number of fans.

Owen is still a class player and is one of the most deadly stikers in the game today, he believes that he can further his career by moving to one of the biggest clubs in the world, and he is probably right, facing competition form Raul, Ronaldo and Morientes should seee Owen improve even more, after all he is still only 24.

Owen has scored 158 goals in 297 games for Liverpool, a strike rate of 0.53 goals per game which is very impressive, and is testament to what a fantastic player Owen has been for us over the years.

If Owen does decide to leave, It will be very disappointing for many fans who have seen Owen be such an integral part of our club since he broke into the first team in the 96/97 season.

Whateever Owen decides to do I wish the lad all the best and hoep his career continues to be successful, At the same time we as a club will have to move on, and look to the future without him and I am confident with a new manger at the helm and the new players like Cisse coming in that Liverpool can return to the top of English and perhaps European football.

YNWA.

I agree Beavo, but that is not he point of the post, I am trying to stay positive and remeber the good times Owen had with us, It is very disappointing if he is leaving, and the fee that is being negotaited doesn't do justice for how good Owen is.   :(

yep, although he isn't gone yet, ity is starting to sink in that he may be leaving, a guy I have admired for so long is leaving my beloved club.
No one is bigger than the club, and hopefully we can move on and be successful without Owen, but he will be very hard to replace, but I'm sure we ill be ok.  :)

If he would have been honest last season and let us get a decent price I would add to the tribute. However, he has basically shafted us and has soured all my memories. I will remember him as an arrogant, greedy little twerp who has abused our loyalty for his own means. Great player? Yes he was, great man? No he wasn't. He no longer has the class off the field to warrant a long term place in my affections. Sorry to say but good riddance.

agree to some extent, I will still think of him fondly, but they way he has conducted himself during this time has been poor. I can't blame him for wanting to join Real, but wish he had not been as sly about it.
Will be sad to see him go, but if he doesn't want to be here, then it is necessary, and there is no point hanging on to him.

he did put in alot of lack lusture perfomances as of late great player yes but he basically held the club to  ransom and who's to blame for him leaving himself houiller and the board. he likes to be top dog and benitzes has told him hes has to fight to be in the first team unlike with benitzes the player who where top dogs under houiller some have gone.

Guys, Owen has been a very good servant to the club, and has always put his best effort for us whenever he plays.

Remember that a player's career is very short, we have not been the force of our glory years, but not for the lack of trying - the management has appointed a new and proven coach/manager but perhaps Owen feels that it is time for him to seek a new challenge.

Although still only 24, he has been here for a long time as his exceptional talent has enabled him to break onto the first team at a very young age. Havingscored 158 goals in 297 games for Liverpool with a strike rate of 0.53 goals per game is very impressive and like LFC#1 said, is testament to what a fantastic player Owen has been for us over the years.

If he goes, I bear no grudges, neither should all of us, and I wish him all the best. Just make sure we get a fee for him to compensate us for the loss of one of the greatest ever of our goalscorers.

Thank you, Michael, for all of your contributions to Liverpool and the Liverpool fans.
