i think i'm generally quite unmoved by the horrific news stories which reach us day after day - not that i'm cold hearted but i accept that sh.it happens, accept that there's generally not much i can do about it and move on. but this case about the guy that imprisoned his daughter in the basement for 24 years, raped her repeatedly and fathered 8 children, 3 of whom were also kept in the cellar just makes my blood run cold. i can't even imagine how that can happen, how anyone could do that do other human beings, especially their own flesh and blood. how anyone could allow a child to grow to 19 years of age without once seeing the light of day. how anyone could construct such a functional and expansive set of rooms in his own basement, in which lived 4 human beings for up to 24 years without anyone knowing!!!!
christ, i feel like crying my heart out for all of them.

What really amazes me is that the guys missus and mother of the daughter locked away for 24 years says she didn't know what was going on. 
She really must have been living with her head in the sand to not wonder where her husband kept disappearing to. It really is unthinkable that somebody can hold 8 people captive in the basement of a house and nobody else in the house knows they are there.
This is the second case of its kind in Austria after that case of the girl held captive for eight years who managed to escape after her captor killed himself.
Not enough nosey neighbours in Austria by the sound of things.

Timeline: Austria cellar case
1977
Josef Fritzl is believed to have begun abusing his daughter Elisabeth, who was then aged 11.
August 24 1984
Fritzl allegedly drugged and handcuffed Elisabeth, locking her in a cellar at the family home in Amsteten, north-west Austria.
September 1984
A letter in Elisabeth's handwriting appears, telling her parents to stop looking for her. Police say they believe she could have become a member of a sect.
1988-1989
Kerstin, the first of Elisabeth's seven children, is born in the cellar. The exact date of birth is unknown. Her second child, Stefan, is born around a year later.
May 1993
A nine-month-old baby is found outside the family home along with a note from Elisabeth asking for the child to be cared for.
December 1994
Another baby, Monika, is discovered outside the house along with another note asking for care. Elisabeth's parents are given permission to become foster parents.
May 1996
Elisabeth gives birth to twins, but one dies after three days. Fritzl allegedly burnt the body.
1997
The surviving twin, Alexander, is moved upstairs.
2003
A new note from Elisabeth arrives, saying she had given birth to a son, Felix, a year earlier. He is bought up with Kerstin and Stefan in the cellar.

Kerstin is admitted to hospital with a life-threatening illness. Police urge Elisabeth to contact them.
April 19-27 2008
Fritzl releases Elisabeth along with Stefan and Felix, the two remaining children in the cellar. He claims Elisabeth has chosen to return home.
April 26 2008
Elisabeth, now 42, and her 73-year-old father appear together at the hospital where Kirstin is being treated. He is arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse and abduction.
April 27 2008
Elisabeth and her children are taken into care. Kirstin remains in hospital in a critical condition.

its shocking to think something like this happens in the world. Its beyond words how evil this act is, the years that poor girl has missed because of this evil act can never be returned and the mental problems this will cause will surely ruin the rest of her life.
