when you download audacity though don't forget to download the extra library that enables it to export files as mp3

Hi peeps a friend of mine has been in touch with a computer problem, would be grateful if any of you can pass on any idea`s or maybe a link or two.

The problem is his computer is switching on and off all the time, its not even staying on long enough for him to log into his account, he is running xp but not sure what version. his Dad rebooted last week but the problem still persists, a reboot was the first thing i was going to suggest untill he told me this, could it be a boot virus or is it likely to be hardware any help suggestions would be appreciated as he is dropping the pc off next week for me to take a look at.

if any of you need more info ill supply it once i have it.

thanks in advance JD

Two things can explain this.

a) The fan of the cpu got too much powder and shít, and doesn't cool enough. When you start the computer it's 45 degrees, and as soon as you open some program, it gets too hot and reboot.

Normally, if this is the case, it stays longer on if you had the computer off for quite a while before. If that's the case, open it and with a screwdriver remove the most solid shít. Use aswell lubricant oil (in small quantities), like the one you use in bycicle chains. Or simple replace with another fan. No need to be a computer guru, just follow some simple instructions about how to place a new cooler.

b) An old virus, made a countdown before rebooting if you hadn't the service pack 1 (updates) installed. If he sees a countdown, I'll give you specific instructions for that. If not, let's go to c)

c) The best way to know if you have a hardware problem without being a hardware guru is to download Knoppix. A program (OS), that installs in memory and you'll see windows, etc. You download knopix (it's free), and you burn it in a CD. If knopix loads your system nice, it means your system is nice. If you have memory or motherboard problems, then you'll also have it under knopix. If that's the case you have to repair something, probably memory.

If Knopix runs well, then it means your windows is fúcked. Try a restore of windows, and this is important, install the updates.

If you didn't understand my broken Spanish, feel free to ask.

cheers Sabre and the rest of you, ill report back once it arrives and ive taken a look.

ok, what would you guys do in this situation...?

my flat is on the first floor above a relatively quiet public square. quiet apart from the gang of adolescents that like to hang out there with their spliffs and mopeds most evenings. during the day time i don't give a flying one, but during the night, when my toddler is trying to get to sleep, and they are getting into full on young macho shouting and stupidity mode it really does my head in. the other night they surpassed themselves and i gave them a talking to out of the window - nothing. a second sterner talking to 10 minutes later got them to eff off but not without a few hard stares and comments.

so, the next day i see them all hanging out again so i go to have a word with them - explaining in a calm but authoratative way that they can do whatever the feck they like in the day but after 9pm they had better respect our rights to some peace and quiet and the sleep of my kid. a couple nodded in agreement and one even apologised. the next day they were very quiet.

BUT, there are two of the little bumwipes that are just loving to give me the bad eye all the time now and try to come on all tough and out stare me whenever i see them. i know its just posturing, and exactly the kind of thing i did when i was just like them, but it actually properly annoys me.

do i just ignore them or do i try to bring the little gimps down a peg or two?

boiling hot cooking oil off the balcony should do the trick.

Barring that the old police method was to beat the bejesus out of the hardest one so all the mates know to not mess with you.

one option andy is to go out and talk to the peacefully, tell them you have a baby and you are all having trouble sleeping, ask them if they would consider moving or keeping the noise levels down, maybe being nice will work. however if this fails options one and two are surefire winners

as i said in the post, that's exactly what i've done. i've spoken to them in a friendly manner but with just the right amount of menace to  make them know that i wasn't up for any bullsh.it. the vast majority have got the message - its just these two little pretend hardcases that are annoying me. its nothing more than hard stares and comments to their mates which  in all honesty shouldn't bother me at all.... but it does.

We're talking about teenagers fúckwits, right?

What kind of HeeHon teenager fúckwit? age?, how they dress?, very short hair, tights jeans and martins?, or instead this kind of idiots that seem to have a load of shít in their pants as they wear them very low?

The dangerous ones are the political twáts that are almost bald and they sniff a lot of speed. Mostly because they fancy to get one guy and give him a "paliza" , they're valiant only in groups.  :glare:

If it's not of them, and it doesn't seem to be the case because otherwise they'd would have battered you already, it's just theatre what they're doing. Trying to be manly.

If you ignore them, that might work in a civilised country, but in Spain it will mean that you're intimidated.

You could tell them "Qué cojones pasa" if you want to defy them directly. But if you analyse the situation, it's teenagers (I assume) trying to seem hard. That's not serious. So the proper answer is to smile them in a patronising way, not taking them seriously.

Either they'll cease to look at you, or they'll thell you "De qué te ries". If that's the case you tell him calmly "me hace gracia que me mires con mala hostia sólo porque defienda que mi hija quiera dormir a partir de las 10. Vas a mirarme así siempre?" (Actually, your right to silence as a citizen is from this hour, IIRC).

They'll probably have their head down. If you ignore them it won't work I'm afraid. If they were the dangerous type the situation would have scaled to a fight by now.

Saint or Sabre... please help!!!!!!

I have been playing on online war game called Cyber Nations for nearly 2 years now. I have built my wee nation up from nothing to something that is looked up to by newbies.
Now my problem is that I have not been able to log into my nation page (or anyones nation page come to that) in 5 days, which is a bit of a bummer as the aim of the game is to build your nation up by paying bills, collecting taxes and buying infrastruture etc Because I have not been able to access my nation none of this will be done and I can only be inactive for 20 days then my nation will be deleted (I am 11 days inactive now) and all that hard work, time and money will be wasted.
There seems to be quite a few people with the same problem and we all have one thing in common, we live in Northern Ireland and we are all on Virgin broadband. I have rang Virgin and they have said it's nothing to do with them as it is an American website, which is a load of toss as the Cyber Nations forums and my alliance forum are both American. I have tried resetting the wireless and running my laptop straight from the modem but still no joy.
Please help as I dont want to loose everything I have done.

Ps I know it prob sounds geeky, but I have made a load of friends from all over the world by playing this game and its been fun  :D

Virgin are probably right when they say they haven't nothing to do with it. It seems somehow the database of the online game was fúcked.

I'm sure that database has a webmaster and the best move should be to inmediatly email the webmaster so that he sorts out the situation.

I can't do much more from here.

Lol @ Judge!!! My nation is fine. Was able to get back into it last night after threatening Virgin that I was going change internet providers.
I still dont know if the problem was at my end or their end but I'm happy that is sorted.
Thanks for the advice Sabre!!
