Liverpool need wingers and fullbacks... At the moment Torres and Gerrard are too alone, they are (almost?) the only ones scoring goals on a regular basis, you need more than just two players.

I expect Liverpool to sign at least one world class winger and maybe also another central midfielder who can replace Alonso and score goals.

I remember when Benitez was the manager of Valencia. Back then he also used this 4-2-3-1-formation. Albelda and Baraja (in our case, Mascherano and Alonso/Lucas) were the two central midfielders behind Aimar (Gerrard).

Baraja scored ~10 goals when they won the league. I can't see Alonso do that, maybe Leiva if he's given time, but I'm not sure... Linked players such as Barry and Michael Johnson(!!!) could do the job Baraja did in Valencia.

While I like Aurelio on the left back, I think a new right back is needed. So a new right back, central midfielder, one world class winger and another winger (not necesserily world class) are what I would target...

Sure, it could cost a lot of money, but there are good cheap options out there, such as Degen on a Bosman (I wrote about in in another thread).

this is nonsense,

babel will be more than good enough next year, remember it takes time for most players to settle down to a new club & country.

I believe we need a right winger with real quality, and a dynamic right back. and a few quality young players to back up

Auerlio is fantastic, and he can play in both directions, and would have shown more if he hadn't have been injured.

as for the clamour to sign a "second striker" are we gonna be able to convince anybody better than Crouch (who proves him self time after time) to sit on our bench behind torres and ultimatly Gerrard?

as for the wings, what happened to Adam Hamill he showed so much promise last season at dunfirmalin

finally regarding the rumours of us wanting Barry, we
don't need him!!!

We need to clear some muck out of our system -
out with some stinkers in with some winners - realistically:
OUT:
Voronin
Arbeloa
Crouch (not bad player but won't get games)
Benayoun (not LFC standard)
Finnan (if younger then keep, but getting on).

IN:

Aguero/Huntelaar/Villa/Martins/Jones = 8-25 million
Modric/Silva/Bentely = 12-20 million
Lahm/Rafinha = 10-15 million

Meaning our team: (My personal opinion)

GK: Reina

RB: Lahm
LB: Carra
CB: Skrtel
CB: Agger

CM: Masher
LM: Babel
RM: Modric
CM: Gerrard

ST: Torres
ST: Aguero

Very unsure about Alonso, could be some changes but really needs to show some consistency after his display at Chelsea.

Alonso may not have been himself in recent times but what other player in the world can spread the ball like him.

I my view I would invest in a left back because Riise was never a great left back but he would score goals to cover that up, but now that has dried up he is as useful as a c**k flavoured lolipop. Also fitness of fabio is questionable.

A right midfielder who won't be scared to beat a man and not pass back to defence.

A left winger so that we can push babel to a more forward roll.

With this i feel the title would be ours.

Backs to the future in hunt for star quality
May 3 2008 by John Thompson, Liverpool Echo

IF ONLY, is a term which is only ever uttered in defeat, and in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s Champions League exit at the hands of Chelsea, Liverpool were left with nothing more than a whole host of if onlys.

If only John Arne Riise had a right foot.

If only Rafa Benitez’s attempt at pre-match mind games had not backfired so dramatically by transforming Didier Drogba from a serial diver to a serial killer.

If only Fabio Aurelio’s injury curse had not struck again at the most inopportune of moments.

If only Martin Skrtel had not succumbed to a knock to his knee and left the battlefield behind.

If only, if only, if only.

The fact is, Liverpool fell short in Europe because, as is the case in the Premiership, they do not have the squad to cope when the going gets really tough.

Weaknesses in both full-back positions have been apparent all season long with Riise, in particular, being no more than an accident waiting to happen for far too long.

Contrast Liverpool’s full-backs with those at their fellow English Champions League semi-finalists and the gulf in quality verges on the gargantuan.

Since marshalling Lionel Messi superbly on his Liverpool debut, Alvaro Arbeloa has done little to convince that he has a long term future at Anfield.

Steve Finnan has been an excellent servant to the club since joining from Fulham five years ago, but the Irishman is now out of favour with Benitez having failed to convince when called upon this season.

On the opposite flank, Riise’s form has bordered on the abject for so long that you have to really dredge the memory banks to recall what it was that made him a fans’ favourite in his early years with Liverpool.

And, though technically gifted, Aurelio cannot be relied upon to play week in, week out, simply because his body cannot stand up to such rigours.

Between them, Liverpool’s four full-backs cost a grand total of £9.5m or, to put it in starker terms, around half of what Manchester United and Chelsea paid for their midweek right backs.

Michael Essien and Owen Hargreaves might both be central midfielders by trade but their quality levels and sheer versatility allows them to slot in on the right side of defence without undermining their teams in other departments.

Both Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher could do a better job at right back than those who have spent much of the season there for Liverpool, but if either of them were shifted from their usual slots it would leave the Reds short in other key areas.

And, anyway, what’s the point of taking two of your best players out of their preferred positions just to make up for the shortcomings of others?

The solution to this problem does not lie within the current Liverpool squad, it lies elsewhere, and that is why when Benitez goes shopping this summer a pair of top quality full-backs must be at the top of his list.

A deal to sign Swiss international right back Philipp Degen is all but concluded, but whether or not he is the man to take Liverpool forward has to be open to question.

Injuries have taken their toll on Degen’s ability to become a first team regular at Borussia Dortmund and his CV does not exactly glitter.

In his early years as a professional, scouts flocked to see him play for the Swiss Under-21s and when Dortmund won the race for his signature it was considered quite a coup.

But Degen’s potential remains unfulfilled and his signing is a risk if Benitez considers him any more than a useful auxiliary member of his squad.

Liverpool are not far away from United and Chelsea. If you look at the spines of all three sides, Benitez’s stands comparison with pretty much anything Alex Ferguson and Avram Grant can select.

Pepe Reina, Carragher, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger (when fit), Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres is a formidable backbone and gives the Reds boss something tangible to build upon.

But unless their quality is matched on the flanks, “if only” will be Liverpool’s mantra for some time to come.

Whatever happened to our interest in Quaresma? Imagine Quaresma and Babel on the wings, opponents will be terrified.

My ideal 1st eleven and really something feasible as the great Liverpool FC need not even think "can we afford xx player" because if any player is deemed worthy to put on the LFC jersey, we should get him, whether he costs 50m or 5m. It pisses me off everytime we have to only look at scraps i.e. bosmans and have to beg borrow and scrape for 15m pound squad players. sigh... c'mon DIC!

GK - Reina

LB - Carra
RB - Lahm
CB - Agger
CB - Skrtel

DM - Mascherano
LM - Babel
RM - Quaresma
CM - Alonso

AM - Gerrard
ST - Torres

With a team like this, we will mount a serious serious challenge for all trophies and begin our mission to pull away from ManUre in terms of titles and stuff won

Before we needed a 20-goal a season striker.....we have that, now we need new wingers, and at least one new fullback.

But i think more important to that we need a stronger mentality when it comes to those days when nothing seems to be going our way and we need some inspiration from somewhere....to be able to pick ourselves up as a team and focus. I hope that will come easier next season for us as our younger/newer players now have more experience.

We need 1 big attacking star for sure this summer at the very least......especially if Crouch & Pennant are on the way out, and some bolstering on the fullbacks....

i would much rather see Carragher stay at CB and have Skrtle as a stand in, my opinion anyway :P

Desperately need two full backs, a top centre half, a left midfielder and a centre forward to partner Torres.

Anything less will see us fall short and be "unlucky" again and  a "good cup side".

We MIGHT get away without a centre half, the other position MUST improve dramatically.

Reclaim the Kop? Let's reclaim the number seven shirt first
By David Prentice on May 2, 08 07:34 PM in Journalists
WHEN Bobby Moore passed on into the promised land for heavenly footballers, West Ham took a momentous decision.

England's most elegant captain always wore number six on his back and it was felt no other mortal could do justice to that jersey. Club officials felt that anyone unfortunate enough to inherit it would suffocate under the weight of impossible expectation.

So they retired it.

Contrary to popular belief, Everton and Liverpool haven't done the same with their number seven shirts this season.

The men currently in possession of that much sought after shirt number are . . . Harry Kewell and Andy van der Meyde; players you might label 'missing in action' if they'd actually been involved in any, that is.
Kewell has been spotted this season - briefly - and without the lure of a Cup Final or a major international tournament to accelerate his healing process.

In fact he has started a whole nine matches this term, but none since January, and of course he hasn't finished any.

The Australian's last sighting in a Liverpool jersey was in the FA Cup calamity to Barnsley, which is perhaps appropriate for one of the great underachieving careers in recent Anfield history.

His lightweight contribution is all the more galling because the number seven shirt is so iconic at Liverpool Football Club.

It's the jersey of Dalglish and Keegan - one, the greatest footballer in the club's history and the other the idolised superstar of Bill Shankly's second great team.
It's a jersey occasionally worn by the Duracell legend that was Ian Callaghan and it was the first number sewn onto the back of thousands of replica kits throughout the 70s and 80s.

Reclaim the Kop? Sure, but can we reclaim the number seven shirt first please?

Across the park it's the number nine which is cherished, but more than a few class acts have sported seven on their backs at Goodison Park, too.

Trevor Steven oozed style and enthusiasm, Alex Scott was a dynamic Scottish star, while Andy King was a 70s icon who inspired great affection.

Andy van der Meyde's appearances throughout 2007/08, however, make Kewell look like a latter day Cally.

That wasn't an optical illusion on the subs' bench at Goodison on the opening day of the season. It was the Dutchman who boasts 18 international caps and has graced clubs of the stature of Inter Milan and Ajax, but can't maintain a level of fitness sufficient to guarantee even a regular place in the dug-out.

He was back on bench-warming duty on September 30, then again three times in February. Not once, however, did he get further than the pre-match kick-in.

So, before the 2007/08 season has even come to a halt, can I make an early call for the 2008/09 campaign?

Can we have our number seven shirts back please?

And give them to somebody who might actually play once or twice?
