The rose tinted specs on here is at times shocking. I personally don't see this love affair with him, people are making him out to be something he's not, a good player yes, but he's not undroppable. I wouldn't say he's any better than Xabi for a start.
Can't agree with you there mate. He may not have some of the tools that Xabi has in his locker and certainly has limitations in his use of the ball, but he is much better than Xabi (imo). He is more mobile, alert, better tackler, and arguably better positionally than Xabi and Plus the fact that half of Xabi's game seems to have been lost now that the opposition know that if you pressurise him he has neither the pace or ability to cope. I know you don't think pace is the be all and end all of football, but Masch has it and Xabi hasn't, and this does make Xabi easy to restrict.
If you noticed against Arsenal, as soon as Flamini went off, Hleb dropped back into midfield and Xabi had time and space to pick his passes, and had a great 5mins. As soon as Gilberto came on Hleb went back to closing Xabi down when we had the ball, and Xabi's passing game disappeared.
Mascher has probably been M.O.M more than any player this season, which is were I came in nominating him as runner up to Torres.

the notion that ronaldo is a winger is one of the biggest myths in world football.
Agreed. Saw a piece the other week about how we'll all look back in a couple of years and laugh at the notion that Ronaldo ever played out wide. He's becoming more and more of a striker everyday--to the point where Ferguson pushed Rooney out wide and played Ronaldo up top away to Roma.
If he's not a winger then what is he?
He certainly doesn't lead the line up front, because receiving the ball with his back to goal is certainly not his game.
Granted he is not a wide midfielder because in United's formation he has next to no defensive responsibilities, but his starting position is definitely wide.
He is a winger, but he has licence to roam in what is a very flexible United front line.

I'm not disputing the fact Mascherano's a good player. If you read between the lines I clearly said the opposite, I do rate him highly, as I do Alonso.
But my point was he's well overated by our own fans and has his limitations. I personally don't buy into all this mediaand think there are alot of midfielders in the league with similar quality.
He's certainly not been one of the leagues best players this season.
