England striker Peter Crouch accepts he will probably have to consider quitting Liverpool in the summer to get regular first-team football.

The 6ft 7ins forward scored an impressive opening goal in the 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

However, Crouch feels he is likely to be back on the Anfield bench for tomorrow night's second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with the Gunners, when leading scorer Fernando Torres is expected to lead the attack again.

Liverpool have offered the 27-year-old, who arrived from Southampton in a £7million deal during 2005, a new contract.

Yet Crouch, who has 25 England caps, intimated his future could well lay elsewhere if he cannot hold down a first-team place.

'I would love to stay, it is a fantastic club and I love everything about it, but I have got to be realistic,' said Crouch, who has just seven Premier League starts this season.

'If I want to have any aspirations of playing for England, or furthering my career, then I have to be playing - and that doesn't seem to be the case at the moment.

'I will have to look at it - but that's certainly something I won't be doing now, I will be doing it at the end of the season.'

Crouch, though, insists his current focus in on helping Liverpool progress in Europe.

'At the moment I am concentrating on winning something for Liverpool and playing some part in the end of the season,' he said.

'We have got a Champions League run-in now and it's exciting for us, and all my efforts are focused on that.'

Reds boss Rafael Benitez made eight changes for the Premier League match on Saturday, and looks set to tinker with his side again tomorrow.

Crouch, though, is expecting to be back on the bench.

'It's pretty clear I probably won't start,' he said.

'Obviously if the manager plays one up front, he is more than likely to go with Fernando - and rightly so, he's been fantastic this season.

'Before when he was rotating at least I was getting a game here and there. But the manager's obviously stuck with a formation now that seems to be working, and credit to the players that have been playing in that system.

'We have certainly been playing well and I think we have got a great chance of going through to the semi-finals now in Europe.

'But for me, I will just have to obviously keep working hard and try and change his mind.'

Crouch revealed: 'It can be disheartening, but you have to keep going.

'I am one of those players that will keep going, I keep working hard in training, and, if called upon then hopefully I'll do what I did at Arsenal.

'At a big club there is always that pressure. Even if you start every game, if you don't perform, you know you are going to be out.

'But maybe me more so, with the fact that I haven't played that much this season, so, when I do, I have to make sure that I do well and do the business to try and stay in.'

After holding the Gunners to a 1-1 draw twice in the space of four days, Crouch believes Liverpool will have a psychological edge tomorrow.

'We have got to take confidence from the fact that we've played two away games now against Arsenal and certainly not been outplayed at any time,' said the striker.

'We have given them a good account of ourselves, could have won either game, it could have gone either way.

'Now, when we are at Anfield and with the crowd behind us, we feel we can beat anyone.'

It is a great loss to see Crouch go, and we will be left with this idiot Benitez and his babes the donkeys Kuyt, Voronin,Riise, Lato, Aurelio etc, many players not even worth wearing the Liverpool's top, it is a shameful act by Benitez, and I sincerely hope that Benitez will fall flat on his face and :censored:

off out of LFC totally.

Seriously keep taking the medication, to suggest Crouch would have brought us 15-20 extra goals has to be one of the daftest things I've seen on here. The guy has now managed 40 goals in 141 games and is one blank away from 100 blanks for Liverpool. And Crouch has made 33 appearances for Liverpool, that's about 2/3 of the games played. And in those appearances he's netted nine goals at a goal every 192 mins.

Maybe he'd score more if played regularly, but most he scored was 18 last season in 49 games so to suggest he'd bring an extra 15-20 beggars belief. Maybe 5 or 10 if you're being optimistic, there's certainly nothing "clear" about your claim

33 appearances? So you class 30 seconds against Everton as an appearance :laugh:

that's one of the daftest things I've seen on here.

Crouch has made about 10 or 15 starts this season. Unlike you I don't know exact figures. I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong. But lets take 15 starts as the given rule for Crouch this season, 9 goals isn't bad. He's probably played 90 minutes in about 5 games. He comes off the bench for 10 minutes here and there, they're hardly appearances of any time. More like cameo appearances. The Arsenal game at Anfield earlier in the season, is the only time I can remember Crouch coming off the bench with still at leas half an hour to play. So how you can say he's made 33 appearance and then suggest his nine goals is a bad tally is beyond me. Considering about half of those "appearances" have been from the subs bench.

haven't seen enough of crouch and torres to see if they'd be good or not togeter, rafa obviously doesn't want them to play together for whatever reason and crouch can't really play many other positions. He's not prolific when used as the main striker as we have seen in previous seasons and i think its plain to see he's not going to be used all the time so good luck to him wherever he goes.

he hasn't bitched or moaned so thats good to see.......the replaceent for him however has to be worth it. Or maybe this Nemeth kid im hearing so much about will actually get his foot in the door, maybe even Lindfield(is he doing well wherever he is?)

Unnecessary this fella, then we wonder why people get involved in slanging matches.

On a seperate note, Owz' points out that Crouch has averaged a goal every 192 mins. That'd be a goal every two games or so then, hardly a disaster for a bloke who's not really been played with any consistency. Lets face it, Crouch has not really been given the opportunity to find any sort of form, and the fact he can swing through the doors, say "tonight Rafa, I'm gonna be a striker" and score a goal like he did the other day, as well as put int he performance he did is deserving of much credit.

I agree with Owz' about the fifteen to twenty goals being wildly optimistic, and I agree with Rafa that when playing 4-5-1 then Crouch isn't going to play. I also agree with people who say you can't put our lack of success in the league solely at the door of rotation, there are many other factors to consider. I am absolutely convinced for instance, that the managers insistence in playing Kuyt and not Crouch earlier in the season when we were playing 4-4-2 was significantly to the detriment of the team. It was a huge mistake, and it is only the fact that we are a distance behind that has prevented there being more said on the subject. If we were currently five or six points off the top, people would very definately be questioning the consistent selection of a fella who has scored three league goals all season (two penalties and an inadvertant rebound) over Crouch.

As it is though, it's right for him and it's right for us that he moves on at the end of the season. He leaves with his reputation significantly enhanced, and we'll probably end up making a nice profit on the original 7 million we laid out for him, even if he has the deflationary effect of only having the one year left on his contract hanging over him. It's also very nice to read the interviews with Crouch, not only is he a good player but he seems to be a nice bloke as well who has conducted himself exceptionally well while he's been at the club. I would certainly wish him all the best wherever he goes.

Although clearly not a bad player and not the worst in the squad I won't be sorry to see him go. We can do much better, there are better players out there for less money who would be better third and fouth choice players for a club like ours.

If it was down to me, Crouch, Kuyt and Voronin would all be out the door this season. None of them are good enough and all have glaring weaknesses.

If the big man goes its likely at least Kuyt or Voronin will stay. Would much rather them 2 useless footballers go than Crouch.

Exactly.

And Crouch of the three will likely command the highest fee, not because he's (much/any) better than Crouch, but because teams are interested in him and quite probably because he's tall and scored goals for England - albeit against mostly naff sides. And of course interest for Kuyt would come from abroad and unless it was Italy or Spain then we'd probably not get a Sissoko like price for him.

I read Pompey are interested in resigning Crouch, if we could get £8m+ from them for him I'd take it. He did well on the south coast for them and saints so it might be best for all concerned. We could then put the £8m+ towards a top strikers and have Kuyt third choice. I'd retain Voronin until a decent offer came in and we'd covered fourth striker, but for me the priority is to sign a top striker and the best way to go about that is add money from sales to whatever budget is available. We might also get decent money for Riiise, possibly Pennant as well. Get anywhere near £15m for them and then we can sign a £15m+ striker.

Farkin' hell...I can't believe the tripe I've just read in this thread.
Get rid of Kuyt 'cos he's muck....gimme a break, you muppets. Sure, he's no Adebayor, Torres, Rooney or Henry. But if the other 9 outfield players on LFC applied themselves even half as much as the wee man does, we'd be a helluva lot closer to the top. In all the games I've seen the man play, he has never given less than 110% for the whole 90 minutes, unlike many of the prima donnas alongside him. What, for instamce, would it be like if Babel took a leaf out of the Kuyt book and chased, harried, attacked etc. for a whole 90 minutes ? He'd bloody terrorise the opposition, that's what.
What if Gerrard turned up for *every* game we play, and not just one or two out of three ? What if he harassed like Kuyt ?
To my mind, there are two players on that field week in week out who give it their all : Masch and Kuyt.
I'd happily offload Voronin. Crouch, no, but I don't see how Crouch could fit in to the squad unless he ups the ante. He just doesn't look ar$ed when the ball bypasses him, and shows no urgency to go get it back.
