Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I am very dissapointed by the quality of the opposition so far. In the other groups there is Chivas from Mexico who might be better and Sporting Lisbon. Sao Paulo, which is a massive club in Brazil, play in front of 80,000 and have had former players of likes of Kaka, Juninho, Julio Baptista, Cafu, Leonardo etc. sent a team to the tournament, but they lost all three of their group games, not sure what happened there I thought they would be our main rivals to win the tournament.

You can the see the Benitez effect straight away. Out of the domestic cup, yet doing well with teams from abraod.

Seriously though, future is looking promising, but they still have to be given a go to make the whole process worthwhile.
1) You'll Never Walk Alone
2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

Now I know why we're destroying these teams.  It looks like our reserves are up against 15 year old midgets.

.tv keeps reporting that we play a combined Sporting Lisbon and Benfica side in the semi finals. I don't think they understand what the SL in SL Benfica stands for (Sport Lisboa e) or that Sporting Lisbon is actually called Sporting Clube de Portugal and they are located in Lisbon

I suppose one concern is we've never really been well represented at youth level for England. Fowler was on the bench for England u16s to u18s because Kevin Gallen was in the team ahead of him. Gerrard didn't get picked regularly until u18 level.

I watch a fair bit of youth football and we have a load of lads who are better than what's in the u18 and u19 squads. Spearing and Darby should be in the u19 team never mind the squad. Ecclestone, Highdale, Amoo and Kelly should also be in the u17 and u18s, although England are particularly strong at that age group and have done well over the last few years so it's a struggle to break in to the team. I don't know enough about the younger age groups to know who we have.

Having said all that, we haven't been producing enough quality players in recent years, that's obvious enough. I think/hope all that will change over the next few years though when we have our school up and running and will be able to give WAY more coaching to our players.

RESERVES THROUGH TO DALLAS FINAL
Paul Hassall 22 March 2008
Liverpool Reserves booked their place in the final of the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup after edging past a tricky Benfica side in an entertaining clash at the Pizza Hut Stadium on Friday night.
Goals from Andras Simon and Ryan Flynn secured a 2-1 win for Gary Ablett's men, who will now face Mexican outfit Tigres in the final on Sunday evening - a side they beat 5-1 during the group stage of the competition.

Ablett admitted he was both pleased and relieved to see his team progress to the final after SL Benfica provided his side, with what he felt, was a tough examination.

"It was a very, very difficult game against a technically gifted Benfica side," Ablett told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"They made it hard for us, especially in the second-half when they had a 25 minute spell where they could have gone ahead, but we held on and got a well worked goal late on.

"It was an important strike from Ryan as we were really tiring at that point and I don't think we would have fancied extra-time."

The Reds had gone ahead courtesy of a poacher's goal from Andras Simon on 33 minutes but were pegged back just after the hour mark when a swerving 30-yard strike from Simao bounced over the dive of Peter Gulacsi in the Reds goal.

It gave the Portuguese side the initiative and they enjoyed a dangerous spell of possession, in which time they hit the bar, before Liverpool swept forward and snatched victory courtesy of Flynn.

Substitute Krisztian Nemeth broke down the left and when he cut the ball back, Flynn was on hand to drill the ball home with just two minutes left.

Ahead of the match, Ablett was boosted by the arrival of the Hungarian trio of Gulacsi, Simon and Nemeth, who had missed the previous matches in the competition due to passport complications, and he was delighted by their contribution to a tight contest.

"Peter (Gulacsi) played very well in goal and was unlucky for their goal and he just couldn't get across to it after what appeared to be a slight deflection," said Ablett.

"As for the other two Hungarians, Andras Simon and Krisztian Nemeth both played a half each and Simon worked very hard and deserved his goal.

"We brought Nemeth on in the second-half and in the end he was probably the difference for us with some great hold up play and he also went close with a few headers.

"He got some reward though when he set up the winning goal for Ryan which means we can now look forward to the final on Sunday night."

If the Reds are to return home with the Dallas Cup they will have to see off Tigres for the second time in the competition, following the 5-1 success in the group stage.

It is a game many supporters will assume Liverpool will win after such a high margin of victory last time out, but Ablett is keen for his young players to avoid any form of complacency.

"Everyone knows we beat Tigres 5-1 in the group, but the key is not to under-estimate them," he said.

"That scoreline flattered us and in truth, they were probably the better side for long periods in that match.

"But we know that if we apply ourselves in the right manner and play to the level that we know we are capable of, we have got a great chance of winning the game and coming home with the cup."

That is poor journalism.

the name of the stadium is Pizza Hut Park.

One of the few stadiums in the country built specifically for football, so don't laugh. only cost 40 million pounds and was built by HKS. a 20,500 capacity

Doesn't make it any better joe.

Looks like a decent stadium though and it's good to see that it's solely for footy. There's clubs over here who could do with that mentality. Wigan's JJB stadium is a disgrace because of the rugby league.

Good to see we're in the final, lets just finish the job off now and make sure we win it.

Jordy is too old. It a U19 tourney and everybody else is gone cept for him and plessis and maybe one or two others so if he didn't train with the first team he would have been by himself
