Depends when you're going Annie and what italian city you're going to but there's some cheap flights here .

link

No doubt you can also get cheap bus travel (Eurolines)

Me too ,rail travel in France is the Mutts Nuts but unless you're on some kind of concessionary ticket it's not always cheap.

we will probably go directly to rome (having beaten missus who wants to do some shops in Milan first :no  :D ), and the site you refer looks like the best way yet very cheap compared to others i've just assessed (one alternative was by easyjet but having to stop at geneve first, never mind being more expensive), and cheaper yet faster as well than the eurorail

loads of cheers for that, mate!

Have a look at Eurorail passes as well Annie. Not sure how long your going to be in Europe but if your here for a couple of weeks and intend to tour around then a Eurorail pass as well as being a great way to travel could also be a relatively cheap option.

Don't forget commuting to and from Airports can be expensive and remember to establish if flight costs quoted include airport taxes.

we are planning to visit 2 or 3 other europes for around 10 days before returning back to liverpool, then heathrow and finally back in HK
so, yes and thanks again, we will also study the eurorail scheme  :)
