Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I've said it before, the only way I'd keep him is if he was willing to sign a pay-as-you-play deal.

Still one of the best talents at the club, but physically he's a wreck now, can't last 90 minutes and he's not even 30.

he played as well as anyone could have without scoring against barnsley. So unlucky to get that goal that would have been what he needed

Has this thread got more posts than Kewell has games for Liverpool? Good games was probably past after pages 1 or 2

Desperate Kewell goes the extra mile
By JOHN EDWARDS - More by this author »

Last updated at 21:51pm on 28th February 2008
Harry Kewell is doing extra training with Liverpool reserves in a last, desperate bid to earn another contract at Anfield.

The injury-plagued Australia winger is out of contract at the end of the season and has little chance of another deal at his current £70,000 a week after making only nine starts and failing to last 90 minutes in any of them this season.

He is hoping to negotiate a pay-as-you-play extension and has spoken to manager Rafa Benitez in an effort to win over the Liverpool boss.

Benitez confirmed: "It is true that Harry came to see me and that it was his idea to do extra training with the reserves to build up his fitness. He has a professional mentality and his approach is very positive. He must carry on working hard and making sure he is ready for any opportunity, but I have no problem with him at all."

Kewell, signed from Leeds for £5million by former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier, faces an uphill task to stay at Anfield beyond this season after making only one appearance as substitute in the past month.

But he pushed his claims for a recall by scoring the second goal in Liverpool reserves' 2-0 win over Manchester United.

"He is a typical Aussie who doesn't know the meaning of giving up," said a close friend.

"There have been approaches from other clubs, but his only interest is winning over Benitez and staying at Anfield."

Of course he wants to win benitez over, he has a cushy contract to maintain ! Where else will he get that kind of wage?

I think if he is willing to work hard and take a pay as you play contract thats fair enough. He would get a better contract elsewhere than that.

Kewell heading for the exit at Anfield

Mar 13 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

HARRY KEWELL’S Liverpool career appears to be drawing to a close after he told Rafa Benitez he wants to be allowed to travel to a training camp with a young Australia side rather than work on his fitness at Melwood.

Kewell is keen to join up with an Australia squad featuring just four senior players next week while his Liverpool team-mates are preparing for the visit of Manchester United in the Premier League.

Should Benitez relieve Kewell of his Melwood duties it will be the clearest indication yet that the injury-plagued winger has no future at the club.

Kewell was not in the Liverpool squad which travelled to Milan for Tuesday’s Champions League tie and he has not played for the first team since a fleeting substitute appearance against Barnsley last month.

With his current contract due to expire this summer and with no suggestions that he will be offered a new deal, all indications are that he is now heading towards the Anfield exit door.

The Aussie training camp takes place in Singapore and national team coach Pim Verbeek had resigned himself to working with just a group of young players while the majority of his senior stars remained with their respective clubs.

But with a World Cup qualifier against China in Kunming looming on March 26 – just days before the crucial Merseyside derby – Kewell has told Verbeek he wants to take part in the training camp in a bid to build up his fitness and to be ready for international duty.

The decision about whether he is allowed to travel to the Far East now rests with Benitez and should he give Kewell the go-ahead, it will be the clearest signal yet that his five-year stint with the Reds will not be extended.

It's a shame to have spent a bit on a good player and get an injury prone player who's never sparked in red. It would be a travesty if he gets fit and a game in the CL final, would have been nice to get a fee for him, but better just to write him off (the wages and as a player)

rafa has given him more chances than any other manger would have as he saw real talent in kewell just maybe not enough desire!!

such a shame as when he is on his game he is great to watch!!

he won me over with a good season but could stay out of the recovery room to justify a new contract

His time has got to be up this time. Ive always been a supporter of him through the countless injuries over the last couple of years but i dont know how many times ive said "Oh just one more season, he will prove himself"

Im finally fed up with it now
