Rafa " why i signed torres and not owen " - Gbjh this one is for you

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

It's simple math really. With more games to play it looks like Nando can be our first player to hit 20 league goals since Sir Robbie!

Torres first season:

07/08 - App: 25, League Goals:18, Total:24

Owen's best two seasons:

02/03 - App: 35, League Goals:19, Total:28

01/02 - App: 29, League Goals:19, Total:28

This season:

07/08 - App:18, League Goals:4, Total: 6

Athough Owen was fantastic player for us when he was here as far as im concerned Raffa made the right decision in opting for Torres in stead of him. Owen saw the pound signs he never gave Benitez a chance Torres wanted to play for us Owen didnt that says it all in my eyes. I would take Torres over Owen any day of the week the lads got the full package and still learning the prem,

What all you Benitez Haters {Rock,Hiemdell and Peewee} must ask yourselves is do you honestly think he would of been wearing the red shirt if Raffa wasnt our manager. I think not and maybe we could of ended up with Owen back if Someone else would of been in charge,

I think Torres is a better player than Owen, even when Owen was at his peak.

Owen was a good finisher, but his main weapon was his pace, which unfortunately he has lost due to injuries.  People also often forget that Owen's link-play and ability to hold up the ball was almost non-existent.  Torres on the other hand can do just about everything - hold up play, work the channels, link play, score headers, score left foot, score right foot, score from outside the box, has pace in abundance, strength and his work rate is class.  He could become a club legend if he stays here long enough, he's that good.

I am also getting to that same notion......Torres is class. Owen might have been great..but now he is a shadow of himself.

Fergie, wan.ker and mourinho (if he was still here) wouldn't sign owen now...and neither should we.

Owen at his best was unstopable, likewise Torres has been unstopable this season. But for me to class Torres as better than Owen, Torres has to produce the goods year in year out. Obviously he can't do this until he's been here for three or four years, but if he does then I'll hold me hands up and say Torres is better than Owen until then I'd still have Owen (at his best)

Torres however is looking better and better and sides still haven't found a way to stop him, so I fully expect in a few years time (if I haven't been banned for life of course :D ) to be eating my words and admitting Torres is a better forward than Michael Owen...I'll even put it on my signature so I can't get away with not saying it. If Torres has scored 60 league goals in his first four years I'll admit it.

4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

Torres will get better and better.

Manhattan predicts that next season in the Prem Torres will score between 50-80 goals.

I think Torres is better then owen was even in his prime its just that when torres was the age owen was when he was in his prime he was playin 4 a poor alt. madrid team on his own upfront...............owen was spearheading a very attackin liverpool side

Torres easily matches owen 4 pace even in his prime, hes more skillful, stronger, works harder 4 the team & is just a good a finsher

Good piece of business by Rafa

Those couple of occasions today where we saw Torres tracking back into his own half to harry the ball carrier and win back possession provides another glimpse at the difference between the two.  Owen at his prime would never have done that (to be fair, that wasn't his role in the team as it was set up then).  I just think Torres has more in his locker than Owen.

We should swap Voronin for Owen next season.

Voronin would do well in the Coca Cola league.

On the flip side of this, will those who've already expressed that Torres IS BETTER than Owen come back and admit they were wrong, if Torres only scores ten goals over the next two years?

It's possible (very unlikely and I desperately hope it doesn't happen) but if it does, then will people bemoaning about "a one season wonder". It's very possible that defenders COULD figure out how to stop him. It's also possible that he just has a bad season and can't find the back of the net. Likewise he could end up like Heskey or Kuyt and have to play out of position. That's why I'm reserving me judgement on what seems to be a world star for a couple of years. If he proves to be a man who nails 30 goals a season in all competitions reguarlly I'll be a very happy man. If it's a one season wonder then I wonder how many people will want to revert back to this topic.

Torres is not as good as owen was in his prime , owen was class in front of goal . Torres does have time on his side . It will be interesting to see how he does next season when defenders will have learned how to play him. Hopefully he will brush them aside and still knock in the goals ,but it will be harder next season i think.
