10/1......laughable.

We'll win the league the next year, and I'm off to put a tenner on it. (before anyone else does the same, be wary I've said this the last 18 years)

Fair play to Gerrard for those comments, probably sums up how most fans feel at the moment.

Could it be taken as indirect criticism of the manager or even some of his team mates? Maybe. He is basically saying that the squad is good enough for a title challenge but for whatever reason it didn't happen.

I think some people can be too critical of Gerrard calling him a whinger. Yes he does whinge on the pitch and sometimes at the press, but you can understand the guy's frustration. He's been our best player for a number of years, at some times carrying the team and still has to put up with fans questioning his loyalty because of the Chelsea saga a few years back and saying that Carra should be the captain. The lad's a fantastic player and in my opinion is close to being the club's best ever player and I think some people won't appreciate how good he is until he stops playing for us.

And whatever happens with the managerial situation, I'm confident that Gerrard will never leave the club while he's still at the top of his game. If he was going to go, he'd have done it by now.

I really hope one of our greatest players of all time dont get to 32 wondering why he never got a prem medal cos if that does happen i wonder how you will look back on these comments then and lets face it he is far better then fatty frank who already has 2 medals i can just understand how he feels.

Gerrard has said nothing wrong here. He's expressing the view of MOST fans (obviously not the more short sighted :censored:

who claim to be fans) The fans who Gerrard is echoing are the ones who want the league a million times more than the European Cup. He's echoing the views that the squad is good enough but something is stopping them from performing to their potential.

I think our :censored:

players i.e. Kewell/Aurellio/Voronin are much worse than the :censored:

players in the other top three. That's why we're struggling to keep up. United bring in Saha, Chelsea Anelka and Arsenal with Van Persie, we bring in Voronin.

Our better players are as good as anything the top three can offer, the quality of the squad overall is good enough, but the difference in ability between our :censored:

and the others is to great. Plus it seems to be our :censored:

players who play a lot more games than in the other three. How often does Fletcher (united) Pizzaro (chelsea) or Traore (arsenal) play compared to Kewell/Aurellio/Voronin. We need to stop playing these shits and get back to playing a squad of 17/18 maybe 19.

Reina, Finnan, Arbeloa, Carra, Agger, Skrtel, Hyypia, Riise, Pennant, Benayoun, Gerrard, Lucas, Mascheranho, Alonso, Torres, Crouch, Kuyt, Babel. 18 players there who could play for a title challenging side. That's without any summer signings or any of the youth kids. If we bring a few signings and a couple of kids through, we can lose 3/4 of the current 18. But those 18 players are as good as anything else that can be offered in this league, providing their played in the right way with the right tactics. But the difference between our :censored:

players (who play oftenly) to those of other sides who play their :censored:

players reluctantly or when forced to.

He's only saying this now? And then he mentions if we win the CL it will still be disappointing? Did I hear him say all this bollox -be it truth or not - in the season we did win the CL? No.

In 2005, we wasn't in most people's opinion ready to challenge. That's not my opinion because I feel we should challenge every season, but that's not important here.

The truth is this season was meant to be the season we went for the PREMIERSHIP. The fact that we're going to be 25+ points behind, is failure and not even the European Cup could paper over the cracks this season. In 2005 it could because of the surprise that we won it. So it's a pretty petty question you asked.

I cannot believe people are giving Gerrard credit for stating the obvious. We have been shi.te this season, we were shi.te in the league last year as well. It doesn't take Gerrard (or Carragher or anyone) to tell us all what we all know anyway, it has nothing to do with "balls".

I haven't doubted Steven Gerrard's contribution on the pitch (go back and read my threads properly and you'll see that) all I'm saying is Steven Gerrard is known for a whinge, has done in the past, will do in the future, he should give less of these quotes to fansites/newspapers/tv and stick to what he does best.

I'm sorry if I don't think the sun shines out of our captain's ar.se but with Gerrard people have to realise that personal ambition and ambition for the club do not always go hand in hand.

if gerard had said this a few years back i would have been suspicious of him trying to get away.
but he has done so much for us in that time that i have no doubts about him.

when he says the squad is good enough, to me this leaves only one other reason why we are not winning. the only problem is it seems nobody has a clue on which manager should come in so we cling to rafa.i think we should not buy anymore players and use the money for a search for the right managers.if he is not right just give him the boot after one season...no more 5 years plans.

gerrard is my fav player but I agree with JBG and Rushie on this one... yes he has the right to be critical about this season... but the way he puts it, it's as if he's not putting himself with the team... and the way he refers to CL as 'that cup' is not a very good example of how to treat the only competition that you're left to win... and there was no hint of taking part of the blame on himself... it will be perfectly ok if he said "we werent' good enough... I wasn't good enough"... now he's like saying "we weren't good enough... I'm tried of saying this... I'm 27 now..." blah blah blah... don't forget when the team is underperforming it is the captain's responsibility to spur them on the pitch... he did it in the previous seasons... but this season there were only sporadic flashes of his enthusiam and alot of the time he's guilty of looking tired/uninspired and his body language becomes quite negative... I don't know whether he has a physical problem or something but yeah... he should look at himself first...

So Gerrard's 15+ goals this season are only flashes? What more do you want from him, 60 goals a season? Go look at the start of the season when we were top of the league, Gerrard wasn't performing then because of the injury he picked up for England and had to play through pain killers, so why all of a sudden do we need him now? He wasn't "spurring the lads on" then but we were top of the league. Then when he regained full fitness he was untouchable. 8 goals in 11 games at one point and this allowed other players to slack off because Gerrard was doing the work for them.

He didn't look tired/disinterested then, no because he along with the rest of us thought we were going to challenge for the league. But the man who matters, a certain Rafa Benitez decides to bring our skipper off in the derby. Benitez gets lucky again in the fact we win. Then the game that proved to me and probably Gerrard is the Reading game. Benitez: "sorry fans but I care more for Europe so I'm prepared to lose this game and with it the title. don't worry because I'll win the European Cup and you can hold me up as a genius again"

Gerrard isn't whinging and isn't doing anything wrong. He's saying exactly what most Liverpool fans believe. And after all that's what Gerrard is. A fan of this club. I haven't heard anyone say Benitez is whinging for coming out the following day and saying the same thing. Gerrard has lost heart this season because it's a failure.

What are the odds for that?

I'm not saying that will happen, but it COULD do!

What worries me over the next 2/3 seasons, is that the other 3 at the top will go out in the transfer windows and buy the next cream of the crop, thus making themselves stronger.

It;s like 1+1= 2.

The consistency problem is all about quality in certain areas. we have it in some areas, but other teams have it in all positions.

So what do we do?

At the risk of sounding repetitive and sounding like a broken record. This statement is an example of why Stevie is not the right person to be captain. I think that Rafa did'nt want him and was prepared to let him go to Chelsea. It was Parry and Moores who realised the backlash if Gerrard would go and so rafa was forced to hold on to him. Rafa saw the money at the time. Gerrad knows this, he has never been positive in anyway about Rafa he has never given him any credit and his body language says everything. I think that there is definitely a clash of personalities. Gerrard has no intention whatsoever of leaving Liverpool but he sees that there is an opportunity to pour more pressure onto Rafa. At the same time Gerrard is not a good example of a captain. I intend to post a more indepth opinion of the captaincy issue later and to give examples of why Gerrard is not a good captain.

ha ha i love that question. I also must say, if thats what hes saying to the press, imagine what hes saying to the players? he will captain us to the premier league at least once before he retires, i belive in that
