it doesn't matter what you accept or not, for the 2007/2008 season LFC can only be good enough for 4th (maybe 3rd if Chelsea seriously stumble, but I don't see it).  Everyone recognizes that no matter what the league campaign will be viewed as a failure, I think some might have been ok with a a really close second and could have said that maybe we just didn't get the bounces or the calls in a couple of games, but no that is not even the case, we are clearly not as good as the three teams ahead of us over the course of a season.  This fact has been established and talked about at length, and nothing can be done about going back in time and recovering lost points or form.  However, further failure to qualify for the champions league would be adding insult to injury and that is always bad, so in order for that not to happen we need to pick up our form and ensure that we do finish 4th instead of 5th or 6th

Bottom line is every Liverpool manager is judged on our performance in the league and rightly so.

If we had a side that could play good football week in week out we could stomach a blip in the cups but hell we have been poor in every competition this season.

Houllier won knockout cups and was fired because our league form stank and Benitez will go the same way.

There are many clubs that would kill for a portion of the silverware Liverpool has claimed in recent memory but unless we take that premiership it still seems like we have fallen short.

And then there was one - for a little longer leastwise. Let's draw positives out of a season where we've struggled throughout :-

Liverpool 0-1 Marseille
Besiktas 2-1 Liverpool
Liverpool 0-0 Birmingham
Reading 3-1 Liverpool
Luton 1-1 Liverpool
Liverpool 1-0 Luton
West Ham 1-0 Liverpool
Liverpool 1-1 Wigan
Liverpool 5-2 Havant

And now defeat at home to Barnsley, not even Championship high fliers, that completes a round ten games with little impressive about them - some worse than others. What hope of beating Inter? I thought there was some a while back, although Rafa may just be one of those managers who can't do the simple like win a lot of winnable games, so maybe he'll perform a miracle and win that
