Isn't it a bit early to be getting stuck into Kewell? I thought he did ok last night. Far from his best game but the lad did ok. Hopefully this season we will see Riise getting further up the pitch to offer some support.

nobody's having a go at kewell. i'm just saying that there is a lot more to come from him and we hope to see it sooner rather than later. :)

only easy opposition, but houllier's liverpool were never that clinical or more fluid in their movement, kewell looked comfortable, front two's movement was excellent, finnan was good too, but thats a stop gap. My only concern was the pace of our centre halves, and the negative effect that hammann has on our style of play

agree with you about the pace issue. in this day and age a lack of pace will be severely punished by quick agile strikers. i would go to chelsea and say "there's 5m for gallas" and see what they say. ???

as for hamann, i can't see him playing as regularly this season, especially if alonso signs which looks inevitable at this stage. hamann does effect our style of play to a certain extent in that he's virtually on top of our centre halfs at times. :(

Hi guys!! Greetings and i'm from malaysia. didn't managed to catch the game against AK but the results made me all smiles again as compared to last season. i always feel that what the team lacks is the midfield power and attacking(last season in particular). judging by everyone's comments about the previous game, looks liek we r on the right track to challenge the others...hopefully cisse will shine so as the newly-crowned Euro top-scorer.

I was equally surprised that Owen did not even come on as a sub but nevertheless i have faith in him tht he'll stay & fight for his place in the team as he has been my fave player ever since i watched him played for England in the Youth World Cup back in 1997 which was hel in Malaysia....

Cheers!

Assuming it goes through, i think it's likely that Alonso will partner Gerrard in the centre of the park more often than not this season. I thought it was a decent perfomance and a fantastic result no matter the quality of the oppostition. Remember Newcastle screwed it up last season at the same stage. It was good to see us pressing higher up the pitch and denying them any space, particularly the first 20 mins of the second half when we didn't give them a moments piece on the ball.

It's early doors yet, but considering the importnace of the game, all the talk surrounding Owen and the time of year, i thought it was a pretty bright start.

was impressed with last nights performance, have generally the same views as everone about it:

gerrard looked brilliant as usual and was pleasing to see he didnt take all the freekicks or corners and shared some responsibility that way!

cisse looked very good and will become sharper and adapt better given a few more games, he linked up well with midfield when laying the ball off etc, and with baros beside they were both dangerous and its nice that we have two threats, whereas last season defenders just had to mark owen out of the game and we were screwed cos heskey was never a threat! so we will always have two goalscoring strikers playing which is great news already!

defence looked solid but there was a time when we were one up and they had a header from a cross, the striker put it wide but should have scored it, that was worrying, and i must admit im not too keen on dudek he came for one cross and dropped it in the 2nd half someone better would have punished him, id prefer kirkland cos he will be england number 1 if he gets a run with us, and being an english team it would be great to have the england number one between the sticks, to go with carra and gerrard, and maybe owen if he stays, that would be a great spine of the team!

midfield passed the ball better and there was good urgency about the passes at times which was refreshing to see but a few times u could notice the odd long ball being pumped up to cisse and we dont need to play that way, think the players were used to heskey being there but rafa will knock that ****** out of the players cos, if u look at arsenal and man u they never have to play long ball and we wont either!
kewell did well not great but well he will improve just a bit short of match practise but he will be like a new signing this season when he gets some form into him!

all in all im happy with what i saw and it was great to see warnock and potter playing and i see rafa trying to blood a few youngsters this season which is geat, potters from liverpool but declared for ireland through his parents, anyone know if warnock is a liverpudlian?

houllier had a massive row with steve heighway, and hence never bothered with what players heighway advised him to use from the academy, hence waste of money for the academy but rafa will use it well, watch this space!

anyway bring on spurs and we will really know what to expect this season!

overall thort the result was good but 1 thing really annoyed me riise playing the long balls, i dont think any other player did but riise jus hoofed the ball 50 yards to cisse n baros which came to no effect. Gerrard played decent nothing more but ey if he plays decent and scores 2 goals every1 better watch out cuz this guys gonna become the best allround midfielder in the world never mind europe. I thort finnan did a cover job for whoever eventually plays on the right and we musted keep the guy cuz hes bery versatile player. Overall i think we could have een more clinical in our finishing but the result was good and with more match practise i think we will hae a very good season providing we get alonso and a right midfielder

there was a more positive style of play and a good balance to the side last night. we even had stevie g playing just off the front striker in the last 15 minutes. things are looking up! :grinning:

We all prob expected a bit too much from yesterdays game and maybe are being a bit over critical. It was stated that after Gh's 6 years adapting to a more fluent game will take time I especially thought Sami looked a little lost with the ball as did Riise but Im sure with time these teething problems will be sorted. Regarding Kewell I feel the same as (I think it was StMichael) but could we have that nagging injury story in the back of our minds and thus worry about it (especially for those who recall what starbridge wrote on this site several months ago).
I hate to harp on about Owen but I did feel that whilst the front two showed much promise and I think Cisse could become our Henry im not sure if Baros can replace the natural class of Owen Baros doesnt give me the same feeling that something will happen or that he will definatly score. If he does go I think its only acceptable if Morientes is part of the deal and would like to see him and cisse play as the main two.
Finnans versatility will keep him as a valuable squad member but we need another mid, Alonso will beef us up in the middle. However I agree with the cheeky Gallas offer he is exactly who we need. All in all we are embarking on a new way of playing whose early signs are good. Josemi the gaffers only buy IMO looked class and gave me a new heightened optimism in his ability so lets keep our finger and toes crossed and keep our helds held high, and when your down the pub being asked what the hell is going on at anfield just confidently say you'll see buddy you'll see.
The man who came to merseyside from Newcastle, the man who says he's part of Liverpool as much as the Liver building. When he was needed Alan Kennedy was there. And with now just 8 minutes to go it could be that Alan Kennedy has made a little history.

Looks like Liverpool is already playing better than under the Houllier regime. Let's hope we can build on this.

Bring on Spurs!
