Well, it was a truly amazing game and that last drive from the Giants was magical.  New England had them seemingly dead and buried on a couple of occasions only for Manning and his receivers to come up with that little piece of magic needed to keep the drive going.  I can't get into the pre-match hype for these things (football legends reading passages from the Declaration of Independence...WTF? :D ) nor can I stand the half time show (Tom Petty playing hits from 20 years ago) but the game itself was excellent.

Here was the play of the game.  Manning evades the Patriots pass rush somehow and heaves it down field.  David Tyree stretches and makes the catch, cushioning the ball against his helmet on the way down to complete the first down and keep the game-winning drive alive.  Fantastic!

Saw a bit on the news Bob, was that the pass where Manning somehow extricated himself from a swarm of New England players dropped back a few yards before passing the ball. Still don't know how he got out of that ruck.

I find this salary cap to basically keep the competition even which is similar to Aussie Rules in my neck of the woods quite ironic. Its sort of sports socialism being practised by the USA.

Never been able to get into the game though always distracted by the cheerleaders.............there are puddles with more depth then me

That's the one, Woof.  He was dead and buried--in the clutches of Patriots defenders and nano-seconds from being put on his a.rse.  He sidesteps the rush, drifts out of the pocket and heaves it 30 yards downfield for Tyree to make a circus catch with a defender draped all over him.  Play of the game!  :bowdown

In fact, here's the youtube clip of the play:

Manning to Tyree

one of the greatest catches and one of the most unbelievable Hudini like escapes from Manning. I feel great for him because he has ALWAYS been under the shadow of his brother and father.  He went to the same school as his dad where his father was a LEGEND, in fact they changed all the speed limits on campus to 18 mph because that was his father's number

Watched the 4th quarter this afternoon . Was surprised at how the patriots were unable to even get within field goal range on their last and the games final drive. Haven't watched American football for a while I'd forgotten how 39 seconds can take an age to play . :D

I am surprised that stoppage time in football matches played in america aren't 6-8 minutes.  I would have thought we would have been counting every second the ball wasn't in "open play" by now

This is not proper football. It's just too stop-start, too commercial, and overall a too bit boring for my liking. Plus, I don't really like the look of the stadia and the crowds, there's something about American sports fans that doesn't appeal to me; 'Get in the hole!' as they almost always shout at golf tournaments, is as best as I can sum up.

Question for Joe,

Which would you rather;

1) Attend the superbowl, or;

2) Attend the Champions League final.

If you had to choose one?

It's Liverpool in the UCL final, and whoever you support in the Superbowl.

Well if Joe knows what's good for him, he'll say the Superbowl.  After all, winning the Superbowl crowns you league champions in the NFL whereas the Champions League final is apparently just some pissant little cup competition that any no mark manager could luck his way into whilst not giving a toss about the competition that really matters. :no

I would rather be in the kop against Man U or Chelsea or really anybody than go to the superbowl.  I don't know if I would enjoy being at the Superbowl because I would get so :censored: off at how corporate the event would be.  Both Semi-Finals I am sure would be better atmosphere's.  But there is a disconnect between PRO sports teams and their fans or at least more of one than in English Football.  i think it has to deal with the 1 town 1 team and the fact that each teams fan base spans many many miles, and everyone commutes a long way and tailgates with the 3 or 4 people that they have tickets with and don't really engage to much with any other fans that they didn't know outside of just being fans for that team.

"get in the hole" is supposed to be humorous because obviously you are not going to get it in the hole on a par 5 from the tee, but its just the thought of trying to crush the ball as close as you can down the fairway I guess, but normally only 1 :censored: out of a large gallery would do that.

and I will take exception from you taking the p.iss at American Football as a sport. As a sport it is completely legit, a great game requiring quick reactions strength, size, and speed.  I might be able to conceed that it is an acquired taste that might be harder to adjust to coming from a European or British background, but I have strong faith in anyone who trully follows the game and tries to ignore as much of the corporate and flashy hype as possible, that they would appreciate the game and become passionate about it.

One thing that gets me so mad is that the sport is so popular in America that everyone thinks they are an expert, when really nobody has any idea what they are talking about unless you play or coach it at the highest level, and I only reached the third highest level (but had a really good understanding of the game at that level) but nonetheless almost 90% of anyone that played at any level in college would know more about the game than me and the difference between top universities and the lowest NFL team is such an vast gap that I barely know whats going on and on and unless I had access to the "all 22" behind the endzone film footage that coaches use to dissect their opponents, I would never be able to understand what is "REALLY" going on and how good each player is.  Despite this anyone that plays fantasy which is pretty much every D-bag I know thinks they are an expert and as such overrate players that are just relatively average.

I realize I probably exposed myself as the same kind of person when it comes to football, but I admit that I don't really know anything and just offer the opinion of someone new to the sport, and also admit that I will never understand the game to the same level as many other because I never played.  and I don't think I could ever understand the movements of the players off the ball without watching a game (of high quality players and not a MLS or League One game) or watching from a high up behind the goal view that could encapture the entire field

I started those paragraphs with points that I was going to make but just rambled and forgot

I know that seems like a shot at the Euro value system, I consider it more a shot at the American way of thinking becuase before I started following English Football I always assumed that what happened in the playoffs was what "made" teams and players careers. But this is a stupid way of thinking. The Patriots this year, as much as I HATE to admit it, where by far the best team in the league, and very close to being the most dominant team in the leagues history. But they will go down as failures because they lost their last game. Imagaine if Arsenal had lost the last game the season they went undefeated; yes it would have been a major disapointment but they still would have easily won the league.  I now know that the FAIREST way to name a champion would be to have every team play every other team home and home and whoever has the best record is the best team. It seems so simple to me now, but it goes against everything that is the American sports culture.

I am actually glad that we have this Effed up system of naming champions because now the Pats go down in history as failures which makes me sooooo happy because like i have said before I HATE TOM BRADY.

I think the most ridiculous thing in American sports is March Madness. Which is also one of the most entertaining events on our sports schedule.  College basketball teams play a 35 game or so schedule just to get a shot in the top 64, but 31 of the spots  are determined by conference tournaments (10-12 teams) held at the end of the regular season, the other 33 are the "best of the rest" because not all conferences are equal about 12 teams are conferennce winners but arent anywhere near the level of the other 52 teams and normally have no shot, but the champion of the nation is the winner of this 64 team tournament, which is ridiculous in basketball because games are fairly short and it doesn't take much for an underdog to "just get hot" and win a one off game against a better team that just didn't have it that day, because of this nature in basketball, the NBA has best of 7 series throughout the playoffs to ensure that the "true" better team advances. but even that isn't a great way to judge the champion because in basketball some teams just match up well against another teams weaknesses.  Meaning that a good team that could beat 98% of the other teams in the league in a 7 game series could unluckily run into the one team that matches up well against them in the first round and go out, only to have the team that beat them loose in the next round
