Owen last night

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby woof woof ! » Wed Aug 11, 2004 9:07 am

I keep hearing that Madrids mgr doesn't want Owen , his proposed move to Madrid has more to do with marketing than football.
I'm wondering if this whole transfer to Madrid thing is designed by Owens agent to press for the best possible deal from LFC, if so it appears to have backfired as we now seem to have stopped fighting for his signature. :(

Not so much what he will be leaving behind but rather what he has to look forward to.
From being Liverpools 1st choice striker he becomes Madrids 3rd or 4th ,behind Raul,Ronaldo and possibly Morientes (no guarantee Morientes is coming to us).

He must consider that sitting on the bench could be a big part of his career at Madrid but at least he'll have Beckham to talk to  :D

Very true. I think you are on the ball with that observation.

In previous posts I have mentioned that I think the dispute is more over his position within the Liverpool ranks under Rafa. I don't think that he is guaranteed a starting position any more....(see Rafas comments about fielding the best players on the night....that was a dig at him in my eyes and the real truth). If he goes to Real, the situation will be the same there, only without the legacy.

He looked disillusioned to me. I always use the term 'golden boy' to describe him. That he is no more. Time to grow up, face up and start fighting for his place like a man.

I`m having a hard time seeing the picture here ???
Owen earlier stated that he is determined to play CL-footie, and winning titles. I would say that we now have more than a fair chance of getting past the qualifying round  :) and, I also believe that this is the season we could take on Chelsea and Arsenal for real. If Owen decides to leave, he`s gonna miss out on that and what does he gain? Amongst all the other world class strikers in Real, I bet he`s gonna get used to keeping the bench all comfy and warm for his teammates. Due to the huge squad in Madrid he even risks watching some of the matches amongst the VIP`s, and then he won`t even have David Beckham to talk to.
I fear that when the titles are been brought in the gates of Anfield, he will be sitting on Bernabeu drinking tea, chatting with Posh! How can that be better than joining Carra and Stevie in the canteen?
St. Michael deserves better than that! I would hate to see him leave!!!

If Owen does go abroad, Liverpool should try to include an option to have first refusal to buy him back if things don't work out (like Rush).

A great comparison. When Rushy went to Juventus, we got Aldrige, Barnes and Beardsley and went on to great things.

The club is bigger than one player. And Rush was part of a much more successful Liverpool team than Michael is.

But IMO Rush was not the same player when he came back. And I sincerley doubt Michael will be either.

I wouldn't think it's as that bad. You can not guarantee Fowler would be staying if he had not been sold out.

I'll be sad to see the lad go but 10mill and Morientes (lets pray it's not e'to) for a player 10 months from being a free agent looks like good business to me. If he goes i hope he does well.

As for Robbie, get a grip guys. Would you buy him back now?

I totally agree unfortunatly Robbie since he left has proved that Houllier got that one right, he's now a pale shadow of the player who was guaranteed 30 goals a season in his early 20's.

I have a feeling its a smokescreen to detract madrid from our bid for alonso. I still think he'll sign a new twoyear contract, but if not 10m and morientes is still 20m+ deal.
