No M16 machine guns or any cliched mumbling 80's beefcakes, either saving America single handedly (from an alien species if you like) or saving plazas on Xmas Eve in this film?

(I've watched both Predator films in the last seven days.  that's the film mood I'm in at the minute.  Foreign films can wait for the time being...)

I agree mate. Unless theres robots from the future or sharks which are suspiciously intelligent then its not for me  :D

I'm waiting impatiently for Cloverfield.  Looks a belter.

On the subject of culture.  I've tried, I really have.

The only reason I'm online right now is because my local cinema isn't showing No Country For Old Men and I can't be arsed driving to FACT in Town.  I'd be in the flix now.  I usually go the pictures on a Saturday.  Let's be honest, it's rare that we play at Saturday 3pm these days.

I got my hands on a copy of the original Vanilla Sky with Penelope Cruz, called Open Your Eyes.  That was over a year ago and I've never watched it.  Just never got round to it.

I watched the first half hour of Pans Labyrinth before I decided it was a load of wank, yet iMDB regards it as one of the best films in the history of cinema.  It's not that I haven't got the attention not to sit through subtitles, (I loved City of God for instance) and although I watched it, I didn't get the fuss over Amelie (apart from the stunning Audrey Tautou).  I just can't sit through 'arty' films.  On a completely unrelated but relevant point, I was taken to the Liverpool Tate museum about three years ago by an ex-girlfriend.  I'm still infuriated by the fact that some prick had submitted a blank piece of white canvas, next to a black piece of canvas and THIS was actually considered and accepted as a piece of art.  Thank you very much, ching, ching, ching, coining it in.

I could do it in five minutes in Photoshop now below.  Watch this.

Nobody is fucking telling me that THAT is art.  My ex-girl thought she was a bit educated and was into all that, whereas she probably looked at me as some kind of caveman who couldn't appreciate art.  Well she was fucking right, it bores me, but I wasn't for one second going to be convinced that what I was looking at was some fucking up-their-own-arse beret wearing artist's impression of how they were feeling that day and expressing it in black and white, simultaneously taking the piss out of the whole world.  If it was that fucking easy, I'd be submitting pieces to the place and earning a fortune every day ("Now let me think, black and white today, I think a little red and yellow tomorrow, green and blue the day after, ching, ching, ching, ching, ching...").  I live a half hour drive away from the Tate and you can buy black and white paint and brushes from B&Q on the way up there.  It's only painting a square of canvas.  A two year old could manage that.  At the very least I should have asked for compensation from the place for both wasting my time and insulting my intelligence.

So if you ever visit Liverpool, don't go to the fucking Tate.  Unless you want to be bored out of your fucking mind.  By the way if you want the original of my Photoshop piece above, that will be five grand please.  See?  Fucking outrageous isn't it?

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I sat through Schindlers List for the first time.  I'd never seen it.  Quality film, I lover WWII films anyway, but this was worth seeing.  I kind of ruined my credibility by immediately watching Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back in the same session afterwards though (really funny, laughed my head off...).  I went back to work late you see after the Xmas & New Year holidays so I had a LOT of time to kill.

In fact, I've got an account with LOVEFiLM where they send me unlimited DVD's as fast as I can watch them.  My current list of films waiting to be sent to me is below.  I've seen none of these yet.

u told me jonny. i can watch all films, from harold and kumar to everything is illuminated (very underrated)

its just nice to get a nice mix of everything. for penelope cruz you can watch open your eyes and volver, or you can watch blow or even sahara (awful) she looks the same in all of them.

i have to agree, pans labyrinth is awful, dunno what all the fuss is about. Amelie is not as good as love me if you dare but audrey tatou is indeed stunning, from your list jonny id highly reccomend:

i heart huckabees
the way of the gun
zodiac
swingers

nice list..mostly :D

Once shortlisted for the Turner Prize one of Britain's most prestigious awards.

Fu'cks sake ! if thats art move over Monet, we're all artists as we all create one of those without thinking, we're just obviously too f'ucked in the morning to take a picture and don't have the front to submit it as art !

Estate agents and contemporary artists , not sure who's running the biggest p'iss take.

its the job of the turner prize to be contentious and for what its worth i don't think tracey emin is much cop. to be honest, i don't think a lot of the famous contemporary lot are much cop, although i do like most of damien hirst's stuff. shame he's such an ar.sehole though. the problem for me is that while the tates and the saatchis of this world make money out of contentious, sensationalist rubbish, and p.iss off a lot of people, the huge amount of very good and meaningful art out there (and take my word for it, there's a lot of it) takes a kicking at the same time.

ignore the stuff you see all the time, its business like most high profile media driven activities we're used to. delve a little deeper and i guarantee you'll find stuff you'll like.

jonnymac i can't believe you couldn't get into amelie, it's a great film. i was even gonna call my daughter amelie, but a c.unt of a mate beat me to it by 2 weeks (but he has got a french missus so they get away with it )

anyone who doesn't like arthouse film should be made to watch delicatessen, preferably with herbal assistance, and be asked to revise their opinion

as for contemporary art, some of it i like, some of it is complete cobblers. went to the arnolfini in bristol many years ago and was told to be quiet by some curator or other cos i laughed out loud at one installation which was basically a dining chair with a great big pile of pubes on it   he sneered at me like i was dogsh*t on his shoe of course, oblivious to the fact that i really liked a lot of the other stuff in there. he obviously had me pigeonholed as an idiot full of preconceptions. oh the irony

now i'm done with pretending to be all highbrow, i'm off to post some pictures of flange :buttrock
