Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Nice to at least hear a bit of support for the gaffer from one of our players:

Riise calls for Rafa respect

Norwegian ace surprised at manager speculation

By James Pearson   Last updated: 18th January 2008

Liverpool's John Arne Riise believes manager Rafa Benitez should be treated with more respect by the club's American owners.

The Spaniard's position has been the source of much speculation recently after clashing last month over the club's transfer policy in January.

The storm then calmed somewhat before it was confirmed Tom Hicks and George Gillett met with Jurgen Klinsmann about the Reds' manager's role.

Riise is surprised by all the talk and thinks Benitez's impressive trophy haul during his time with the club should speak for itself.

"We don't know what the owners are thinking," admitted Riise. "But remember Benitez has given this club many trophies.

"He has won the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Community Shield and the Super Cup and has reached another Champions League final, so he deserves to be treated with more respect.

"It's a shame that he has to go through this."

In all of this too, and this is my own speculating opinion. Deep down I dont think Rafa has the majority of players behind him, of course I could easily be wrong.

Somebody said on here the other day that its kind of a good thing that nobody among the players has really come out and publicly supported Rafa.

I well maybe going down totally wrong avenue with this, but I reckon this comes back to his man mangement skills. I've been laughed at and critised by LFC200? once or twice for suggesting Rafa isnt the "arm around the shoulder type". I dont think he is personally, and of course being the "arm around the shoulder type" could of course work both ways for you as a manager, good or bad. Maybe if he wasnt such a .... Cold fish shall we say, he might of got more support publicly than he has from his players and captain in particular. Just as Houllier did when coming back from his Op, and Gerrard scored against Roma I think it was, he ran over to him and hugged him. Gerrard was recently asked if the Hatrrick he scored against Luton was for or dedicated to Benitez, to which I think he replied "No", I maybe wrong not totally sure, but I did read that somewhere when he was asked in an interview. Now If that were Houllier I reckon Stevie would of said yes, or at least gave some sort of inclination he had the captains support in that interview.

Also added to this from certain players like Carra and Gerrard, I'm wondering if they actually feel if Benitez is the right man to win us the title. They may have their doubts, because even if my "arm around th eplayers " theory is wide off the mark. They could doubt the managers methods and abilities to win em the league, and I've said before if they ever write a biography about their latter years of being a LIverpool player and when Rafa was incharge it wouldnt surprise me atall if they slammed his 'rotation' ways in their books. If on the other hand they did support the manager, surely you'd expect them to stand up, or come out and say something positive about the bloke.

I'm just not sure all the players are 100% behind Rafa, which wont do him any favours really of keeping his job in the long run.

Reading the national press this morning - like'em or not the reputable one 'guardian/times' all seem to be saying the same thing - the focus seems to have shifted to the power struggle between these 2 clowns on the refinancing/DIC involvement conumdrum.

Rafa and the team seem determined to sticke together and control events on the field - with the fans firmly behind the boss - and the owners,  Gillette in particular weary of the diasastorous impact of the Hicks revelation last week!

Personally so much has soured recently that footballing acheivements feel less important - rather reclaiming the 'soul' of our club, its inegrity and respecting its currenmt managerial incumbent or  'maginificnet servent' as King Kenny put it recently,  is far more important !

This next week looks like it will be crucila re: the ownership

Liverpool set for new buy-out bid
By Phil McNulty
Chief football writer

Dubai International Capital - the investment arm of the Dubai Government - is to launch a £500m bid to buy Liverpool Football Club.
BBC Sport understands the offer is in the process of being made to American co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

DIC was originally thought to be ready to make an offer for Hicks' 50% share, despite his insistence that he is unwilling to discuss a sale.

But DIC is now poised to make an offer for the complete buy-out of the pair.

DIC were close to buying the club in January, but pulled out when Liverpool moved into advanced negotiations with Hicks and Gillett.

But Gillett and Hicks' reign has caused turmoil on and off the pitch at Liverpool, and DIC have always maintained their interest despite the collape of the previous deal.

Gillett and Hicks are currently attempting to finalise terms on a £350m loan that would enable them to repay money borrowed for their £219m takeover, repay loans used to sign players, and enable them to start work on a re-scaled plan for a new stadium in Stanley Park.

DIC's offer will be made swiftly to present the American duo with a get-out clause before they take out the massive loan.

Hicks, in particular, is under pressure after being subjected to heavy criticism from fans following public disagreements with popular manager Rafael Benitez, and his public admission that talks had been held with Jurgen Klinsmann about possibly succeeding the Spaniard.

And Liverpool fans will turn up the heat on Gillett and Hicks with an orchestrated protest at Monday night's game against Aston Villa.

Website Reclaim The Kop issued a statement claiming they were "not fit to be associated with our club" and banners criticising the Americans and calling on DIC to launch a bid were held aloft on The Kop during the FA Cup win against Luton.

Liverpool supporters are also concerned at how much of the £350m loan will be shifted on to the club's books - with crippling interest payments.

A spokeman for the Americans said on Thursday: "Any suggestion Hicks and Gillett are contemplating a sale of the club or any portion of it is categorically untrue."

DIC backed away from a £150m price tag for a 15% stake in Liverpool last October, but the financial uncertainty surrounding the club has increased and there is hope a new offer will prove more tempting.

Spokesman for Hicks is denying it though:

Liverpool co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks insist they remain 'fully committed to the club' despite Dubai International Capital reportedly preparing another bid to acquire a share of the Anfield team.

A year ago this month DIC were stunned by the last-minute failure of their bid to take control of the club but it is believed they are now set to try to buy the American's 50% stake in Anfield.

DIC yesterday made no attempt to play down speculation when a spokesman said: 'We do not comment on such things, we have nothing to say on this.'

However, a spokesman for Hicks was less equivocal.

He said: 'Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett remain fully committed to the club.

'Any suggestion that Messrs Hicks and Gillett are contemplating a sale of the club or any portion thereof to DIC or anyone else is categorically untrue.'
