08.08.2004 - Walsh 'surprised' by Murphy Spurs link
Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Paul Walsh has expressed his shock at Liverpool accepting Spurs' bid for Danny Murphy, though believes the London club will be signing an 'excellent player' should the Reds midfielder decide to leave Anfield.
Walsh made over 100 appearances for Liverpool between 1984 and 1988 before moving to White Hart Lane, where he spent his next four years, and he admits he's surprised by the prospect of Murphy making a similar move.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Walsh said: "I'm surprised that they're letting him go. I rate him as one of the better midfielders that they have in their possession."
"Unless Benitez has got a couple of other deals lined up to come after this and this is giving him the funds to fund them, then that would be the logical answer, but I'm still a little surprised because a fit and in form Danny Murphy is an excellent player."
Walsh also said that Spurs would be getting a bargain if Murphy can reproduce the form that he's often shown over the past few seasons at Liverpool.
"It's good value at £3million in this day and age, if you've got a confident and in form Danny Murphy. But thats the key to it, getting him confident and getting him playing at the top of his game. If he can do that then he'll be a great buy for them."
